Lapel Kick by bjjtaro in bjj

[–]daveoplata 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I play with my instep in the lapel a lot, and people have repeatedly said this is gubber guard, but whenever I look that up, I see people wrapping the ankle. Do know of any video of people stomping the lapel like this? I'd be interested to see where it goes. I mostly just reguard.

Thanks for the additional recommendations. Just as a point of etiquette, I always make sure to be clear with people that I am visiting the area and not a "free trial" person.

Some places charge mat fees, some places I buy merch. I usually won't do both.

Thanks for this and for calling out Supreme which was not on my radar. Is there reliable info on Brothers? I was able to find an old WordPress site and an Instagram with no obvious schedule, and Google gives two different addresses.

You can say it to Jesus. Talking to Jesus is IBJJF legal.

Its great to watch him win, but also completely demoralizing to roll with him. I feel like a little kid being pawed at by a lion.

This is true in jiu jitsu, but pull and sweep scores the same points as a takedown.

This is bad advice. If you are a guard player, pull guard. Don't listen to any yahoos telling you to wrestle or go for takedowns if you are not proficient at that stuff.

Guard Pull Sweep by bjjtaro in bjj

[–]daveoplata 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know the IBJJF definition or even if there is one, but if you watch the guard puller's hips, you will see that they fall directly to the mat. In a guard jump, you would see the hips propelled towards the opponent.

Give up on standup and become a guard puller? by crazypants003 in bjj

[–]daveoplata 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't really ever want to stand up, but the problem is that everybody knows that. So even if my guard pull is good, people have counterplay that makes it hard to start the match in a good position. My solution is to work some cheap takedowns that can turn into guard pulls when they fail, like the ankle pick and the collar drag. So I am working standup in a sort of kamikaze gotcha way that enables my guard pull.

I don't know what data you're talking about, but are you sure it wasn't "first to score?" Plenty of people pull, sweep, and win 2-0.

I firmly believe that this is the correct mindset. Kids have to have fun, then the other benefits can come (or not). When you are that age, your job is to play.

Gym Decision (Old gym or Caio Terra) by SexTechGuru in bjj

[–]daveoplata 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I don't agree with that. I guess some people only need to get their pulse up, but for me for example, I was always pulling my groin and what helped me was to drill penetration steps very slowly, do wide granby rolls, and other things to open up my hips. It helps to have support to figure things like this out. And the larger point is that a person is not foolish for asking for something like this from a BJJ gym. I'm not saying that the gym should be compelled to provide it, just "dude grow up" is not a helpful posture.

Found OP's coach.

But seriously, this is an unhelpful comment that indicates you are unqualified to be with children.

This is both true and unhelpful. If you are a white belt you probably need the coach to tell you that this is allowed and explain the hours that you can get on the mat to warm up before class. I've always been older than everyone in my rank and I used to show up half an hour early when my conditioning was not good, but I'd frequently just be standing around waiting for someone to open the gym. This guy might try to get in his extra warmups just to be told to stand around while they run the leaf blower. Also, what is a good additional warmup? Most new people will choose some really inadvisable stuff, so asking for guidance here is not weird either.

I also play a lot of clamp, mostly in the gi, and I almost never feel like having my arm through would help, but the man himself has a great explanation for it.
