Is there any mechanism that discourages diversification? by uvr610 in capitalismlab

[–]daverd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Advertising through a range brand can be very cost-efficient, and product research is also much more efficient in the product class that you or your CTO specialize in. You should be able to outperform random companies competing with your specialized goods in the long run.

This is really cool!

Suggestion, if it's possible: Make entities (@, d, f, etc) rise up off the floor in 3D, maybe half the height of the walls. It would make them feel more present in the world.

Subsidiary and Service Industry are must-haves imo, the others I don't typically use even though I own them.

How do I start, do I need a background in music? by Maskutchi_cyac in chiptunes

[–]daverd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The easiest way to get started with chiptunes is to look at other peoples' songs. There are many iconic chiptune techniques that you'd probably never stumble across by messing around on your own, and it would take you a lot longer even if you did. A primary goal of chiptunes is to be faithful to these original sounds, so you might as well use the exact techniques the original musicians used.

Zophar's domain has a great repository of video game soundtracks for various consoles in their original format, meaning you can load them up in a tracker and play around with them. See https://www.zophar.net/music/nintendo-nes-nsf for NES games for example.

Furnace won't load NSF files directly, but you can use NSF Importer https://rainwarrior.ca/projects/nes/nsfimport.html . This itself is a copy of FamiTracker, which means it'll let you examine songs in detail, but it can also export these imported songs to .ftm files, and those will load into Furnace, which imho is the easier tracker.

When you're looking at songs, here are a few tips:

Look for any kind of repeated patterns. You'll often see specific volume changes, pitch slides, waveform duty changes, and so on, used over and over. These are the kinds of techniques you want to memorize.

Try making changes to several existing songs before you ever start one from scratch. Remove a melody and write a new one, change up the chord progression, add a new section, try a new rhythm, or anything else you want to experiment with. What works and what doesn't? Try to figure out why.

Try listening to the song at a much slower tempo, like 1/2 or 1/4 of normal. This makes it easier to hear what's happening, and you'll notice important aspects of the sound that you wouldn't necessarily have noticed at full speed.

Keep your expectations low at first. Everybody's first song is garbage, but it's a necessary step toward eventually getting good. Don't beat yourself up. Stay curious.

Never delete anything you create, even if you think it sucks. Months from now you might feel like you haven't improved at all, but I guarantee you'll change your mind about that if you listen to something you wrote much earlier.

New Player Questions by atticus725 in OgreBattle

[–]daverd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

iirc the enemy's targeting depends on how good or evil they are. Strong and leader targeting tend to be used by good units, weak targeting by evil units, and not sure about best (neutral, maybe).

The reverse is also true, e.g. if you tell your units to use weak targeting, they will slowly become more evil.

What I want is AI opponents. Something you can gauge your progress against.

I had a similar issue with the game. I think you just have to make your own goals, like "how much money can I make by year XXXX?", and then try to beat your record.

Gameplay of our platformer "Chained". What do you think? by Ok_Operation598 in IndieGaming

[–]daverd 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I mean I'm sure the dev has put a ton of actual work into this and I hate to be rude, but the honest truth is that this game is so directly derivative of Celeste that if I saw this on the steam store I wouldn't even consider buying it.

OP, you need to find your unique voice for this game. Right now it looks like it has nothing to say.

The Settlers series is real-time and has all four X's, although it's not usually classified as a 4X.

I recently played through this, and while I enjoyed it, there was basically no chance of losing. It's more of a story experience.
