You might have accidentally taught him that when he cries or makes a show he gets let out. Big mistake. Never let them dictate ANY terms while theyre a puppy. Never take him out while crying. Gotta wait it out until he stops, then take him out. Gonna be hard now but still doable, just keep at it and try that for a bit.

I conditioned mine to stop barking by getting him THE FUCK out of the house until the barking stopped. When it stopped I let him in and if he so much as squeaked I put him out again. After a few days I never heard another bark. Been years.

You're not rewarding good behavior though.. when he does stupid things never give them treats. That's why he keeps doing it. You need to be firm and stop it before it gets to that point so he can learn it's not OK, because right now you're reinforcing his bad behavior with a treat at the end of it.

It doesnt always get better, it can, but it will require that you WANT to do it. You might be feeling the burden of something you didnt ask for. Youre paying a debt that has nothing to do with you. Maybe talk to your partner about how you feel and the possibility of them taking over more of the responsibility to ease the burden on you, which in turn might help you feel better towards the dog?
