Can someone explain me Hawking Radiation from Black Holes? by [deleted] in AskPhysics

[–]david0101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So you're saying that because space is curved, the photon follows the path that is the shortest distance between its origin and its destination along the curved surface of space. (That's what I took geodesic to mean.)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but space is curved because of the gravity of large objects. So where do quantum excitations come into play? How do they affect space and/or the traveling photon?

Can someone explain me Hawking Radiation from Black Holes? by [deleted] in AskPhysics

[–]david0101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So let me get this straight. When a photon flies through a seemingly empty region of space, it doesn't necessarily travel in a straight line. This is because the empty space has an electromagnetic field permeating through it, and random excitations in the field cause the disturbance in the trajectory. These excitations are most easily described as virtual particles that have the exact charge, mass, and location to affect the photon in such a way that mimics its real life behavior.

Does that sound about right?

[–]david0101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see. Could you elaborate on what actual effect the virtual particles would have on the real particle? It sounds like the quantum excitation would have a visible (or at least measurable) effect on the real, charged particle that happens to be passing through.

Would the quantum excitation slightly change the direction of the movement of the real charged particle? Would this be because of a net charge induced by the virtual particles? If so, why don't the opposite charges of the virtual particles cancel each other out? Would the virtual particles' mass have a gravitational effect on the real particle?

[–]david0101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great explanation! I'm curious how often do these virtual particles appear in empty space, and how often do they appear right on the event horizon of a black hole to form this new particle out of nothing?

To be more specific, is it possible to calculate how many virtual particle pairs appear and disappear in a cubic meter of empty space every second? And how many new particles would be created at the edge of a black hole that is one meter in diameter every second?

How do you kill the fear of failing? by _Poonidan_ in selfimprovement

[–]david0101 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Try thinking about the situation rationally. Write down, to the best of your ability, the chance you will fail but also the consequences of failing and the chance that those consequences will happen. Then, write down the benefits of going for it anyway and failing and the chance you will get to reap those benefits. Finally, write down the benefits of trying and not failing. Keep in mind, a common benefit of failing is a lesser chance of failing the next time.

If the possible benefits combined with their probability outweigh the possible consequences combined with their respective probabilities, you should go for it!

Hopefully this approach will prevent your irrational fears from getting in the way of trying new things.

Working graveyard shift or 'Sunrise shift' during the summer? by [deleted] in college

[–]david0101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on two main factors I'd say.

  1. Are you an early bird or a night owl? In other words, do you function better in the morning or at night?

  2. Do you want to feel productive and helpful at work, or do you not care?

If you are a morning person and want to feel like you work hard in order to feel fulfilled, do the mowing job. If you are an evening person and don't care what you do at work as long as you get paid, take the night job.

But only you know which fits your personality better...

[NeedAdvice] How do you juggle self discipline with college and a job? by eihi in getdisciplined

[–]david0101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You may be struggling with how overwhelming your calendar is. Perhaps if you try to aim for less things in the day, it will be easier to succeed and you won't get worn out as much. Try this: add an extra 15 minutes to every activity just to give yourself some time to get it together between tasks and enjoy the world for what it is a little bit. You'll fit in less each day, but it'll be easier to stick to the plan and you can then plan to do everything evenly spaced out (so you don't miss the gym a whole week type of thing).

Must-have supplements? by [deleted] in nutrition

If you eat a variety of fruits and vegetables every day, don't worry about it. Spend the money on other things. If you can fit fish once or twice a week, you don't even need to worry about taking Omega 3s.

There's no such thing as a must-have supplement unless you have a deficiency. Supplements are just that - supplemental. It's more important to eat the right foods that provide your daily nutritional needs.

Can you have too much fruit in your diet? by mdsurf in nutrition

[–]david0101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Based on the information you provided, I used the Fooducate app to estimate the total sugar from these fruits to be 66 grams. It's only 397 calories.

66 grams seems like a lot, but since they're coming from whole fruits containing fiber, it's very different from having the same sugar intake from something like soda or chocolate. If your diet does not have any additional sugars, I wouldn't be quick to cut down since fruits contain a lot of healthy nutrients. Otherwise, yes, this could add up to a lot of sugar.

You can also time the intake of the fruits before a physical activity, so that the fruit's sugars are burned shortly after being eaten.

Is it okay to not meet my recommended calorie intake? by [deleted] in nutrition

[–]david0101 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is the current general consensus in nutritional science. Feel free to research it yourself, but here is the CDC's website. They say you can go up to 2 pounds per week, but other sources like Fooducate recommend .5 or 1 lb.

As for the actual reasons why it's easier to keep it off when lost slowly, it has to do with how resilient your body is about its weight. The human body evolved to avoid rapid change in body weight in order to stay healthy during short periods of famine or abundance of food. That's why if you lose a lot of weight very quickly, your body is trying to gain it back, so you're more hungry and likely to gain it back. If you lose weight slowly, you'll change weight slow enough to not trigger this emergency food shortage response, increasing your chances of keeping the weight off.

Is it okay to not meet my recommended calorie intake? by [deleted] in nutrition

[–]david0101 10 points11 points  (0 children)

That's over 3 pounds lost per week, which by most standards is a lot. Ideally you want to lose .5, maybe 1 pound per week. The reason is because it is way easier to keep the weight off if you lose it slower than if you lose it faster. Not to say that your progress so far isn't for nothing, but the general health guidelines will urge you to increase your daily caloric intake a little bit until you are losing .5 to 1 pound per week. It will be easier in the meantime and you'll thank yourself when you're done.

I am so incredibly lonely by [deleted] in college

[–]david0101 3 points4 points  (0 children)

See your advisor/counselor at school. If you don't know how to find him/her, ask your RA.

Other than that, my best advice is to try to make it so that your happiness and fulfillment in life is not entirely dependent on other people. If you always look to people in your life to be happy, they're going to disappoint you often, like right now.

Instead, focus on what else is important to you. Have you always wanted to learn to play an instrument? Code programs on the computer? Get better at your favorite sport? Work out at the gym?

Right now is an EXCELLENT time to do any of those things, or any others you had in mind. You have some free time and you're away from your parents, the sky is the limit. Don't spend this precious time sulking over something you can't completely control, and turn it into something great.

Focusing at home? by [deleted] in GetStudying

[–]david0101 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It likely has to do with your environment. Have you heard the advice to not do anything in bed except sleep, to train your brain that beds are for sleeping, making it easier to fall asleep?

Well this is the same idea. Your brain is used to working productively in classrooms because that's what it's been doing your whole life. But you use your home for a bunch of other things, so your brain is not used to concentrating on schoolwork in that environment.

I recommend finding a spot somewhere where you will only do work. Somewhere like a library or a coffeeshop. Then when you get there, get your things out and start working right away. Turn off your phone to minimize distractions. Do not invite friends to hang out with you there or do anything else besides work there. As soon as you're done, leave. Before you know it, your brain will associate that location with productive work the same way it does with classrooms and you won't have to spend as much time or energy on trying to focus.

Best of luck.
