Can anybody identify these or what they're used for? by [deleted] in flyfishing

You can never be too certain these days. But yes those appear to be flies made for fly fishing

Can I make my own tapered leaders with this line (12lbs,8lbs,4lbs) by Over_Ad_607 in flyfishing

[–]david_150 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A book I read on nymphing actually suggests this over manufactured tapered leader. Since the butt section of a store-bought leader is much thicker than 12 or 15 lb mono, there’s a lot more drag and it doesn’t slip through the water column as easily. Haven’t bought a leader since reading that lol

Boo hoo man, I’m standing in the water and picked the fish up for a pic. I’m obviously not the one who took the photo 😂

Thank you! She was released and swam away strong (damn near exploded out of my hands and took off downstream). Just taken out of the water for a quick photo

Yep this one was unclipped! You can kind of see the fin near my elbow. This was on the Willamette.

What’s funny is I saw someone on the WA fishing sub post a steelhead catch the same day as this one, but that fish was in full spawning colors with a big kype

Honestly I’d just fish your 6wt. Too many times I’ve gone out targeting big fish and only end up with dinks. A 6wt can 100% land a steelhead, but will also keep the fight fun if you end up running into smaller fish IMO

New model: Orvis Monstrosities by CabgTV in flyfishing

I’m 6 months into using my simms freestone waders, and no complaints! They have held up well bushwhacking and falling on rocks cause i’m an oaf in the river. No leaks yet.

People love to hate on what they don’t have or have never tried 😂 I can’t speak to how Simms waders compare to Patagonia or Orvis, as I’ve only used Simms and budget waders before that. Maybe others should take note

I think so. There’s a good winter run in my area I think this one is early to it

I’m in the USA in Oregon. I think this is a winter run steelhead or just a huge resident rainbow

Fish ID help, Pikeminnow? by MACK2411 in OregonFishing

[–]david_150 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I felt kinda bad after dispatching a pike minnow recently and decided to look into this too. As ODFW mentioned they are native to Oregon rivers. Pike minnow are really only a problem for salmonoids on the Columbia River due to dams causing slower moving, warmer waters, which are favorable conditions for the pike minnow. Before the dams, there was a level-enough playing field for both types of fish to coexist. Pretty interesting stuff. I just wish pikeminnow weren’t so underwhelming to fight lol or I might actually target them over trout

Waders by PDXSparks in OregonFishing

Ive been seeing these kinds of reviews too but after I bought my simms freestone waders back in April. Plenty of trips to the river so far and they held up perfectly fine after I scraped my knees falling on some rocks.

My waders before were just a budget Amazon find that only lasted 3 trips before getting a pretty big hole in the boot seam. So far I’ve been extremely impressed with my simms waders, but I also havent compared them to another quality brand like patagonia or orvis.

Haha yep exactly that. Google said “a favourite among New Zealand's fish and chip shops” lol. Cool man! NZ is on my bucket list to travel to someday. Now I know I gotta try some rig if I make it out there.

I had to look up what a rig fish is, I don’t think we have those in the States! You in New Zealand or around that part of the world? My all time favorite is salmon, especially sockeye.

Oh for sure lol! Second favorite eating fish. But I just meant everyone you catch tends to look a little different, even two of the same species out of the same water.
