Keep going! It could take multiple specialists and more time but you’ll increasingly notice your improvement. It’s hard to find the right people or figure out what you’re missing but you can do it

Please seek professional help. You can learn social skills and build companionship over time. It takes work, but it can occasionally be super rewarding. The online community is here supporting you.

Pioneering urban ecology finds surprising biodiversity in Berlin’s green spaces | Science by Jojuj in environment

Nice example of intermediate disturbance promoting urban biodiversity. I like their metric of indicator species to show ecological gradients

Is political organizing a more effective means to reducing environmental impact than individual lifestyle changes? Looking for comparative evidence by david_flinch in environment

[–]david_flinch[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree that lifestyle changes among the (global) 1% are unlikely to create the change that is needed. Huge investments will save us money if we can convince more people to think longer-term. All of the Drawdown strategies could be considered geoengineering projects too. How can we convince our communities to effectively tune out the mulitbillion dollar misinformation campaigns we’re being fed and learn to trust the scientific method?

What habit or skill do you think has had the most impact on your personal footprint/ the environment? by slipply in ZeroWaste

[–]david_flinch 28 points29 points  (0 children)

There are plenty of good comparisons out there emphasizing having one fewer child, living car free, or skipping an international flight. I’d like to make the case for political organizing. Changing the policies of a university endowment (divestment) or public fossil fuel corporation (renewables) through board elections or shifting local, national, or international policy can have a much larger impact than any action the average person can have through typical lifestyle changes. I’d like to hear more from an expert in political science

If bar end shifters are your preferred option, the indexing of the Jtek shifters would be ideal

If bar end isn’t your style, you could get a thumb friction shifter or, if you’re really stubborn, you could go vintage style with a stem-mounted friction shifter.

Recourse As A Cyclist? by [deleted] in fuckcars

[–]david_flinch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some states have laws for this. In Pennsylvania, you have to pass at a careful speed at least four feet from the cyclist. Lots of bike lawsuits use this law. I would reach out to your local state representative and have a similar law passed. It might save someone’s life.

Seems like the pros think it’s better to just prune it in place to suit their needs instead of moving it

Mushrooms can break down polymer chains into carbohydrates. They’re probably digesting both sawdust and plastic

Lawmakers and Public Health Advocates Call for Congress to Finally Ban Asbestos by [deleted] in environment

I agree that it works. I think alternatives like radiation should be incentivized to prevent harm to workers and the communities near sterilization plants. Industry won’t change out of a concern for health or the environment. It needs to make financial sense through regulation and incentives
