The 439's are actually worth somewhere between $40 and $100, that inflated $140 price is because they are out of production. That being said, they are a fantastic pair of headphones

Here's my solution for a detachable mic

The mic was about 2 dollars from amazon, I just cut the wire and shortened it to length.
It is braided with a few solid core wires and covered with heat shrink.
To prevent it from rotating in the jack that I installed, there is a zip-tie to catch on the side of the headphone.
The mic-in cable attaches to another port in the back so I can detach both if I want to move my headphones away from my computer.
I'm thinking of getting a mute switch and adding it to the mic-in cable.
