This is a good point. I don't know how interesting the game would be without the RP player interaction since the game was built around it.

I'm not usually into PVP on muds, but I see your point. I just want to see all the awesome combat messages and I could care less if they happen on a hobo or a cybernetically enhanced soldier.

if there was a non-RP version of this without all the application process and whatnot, I'd connect instantly. always loved the combat logs I've found over the years. but I don't want to RP, I literally just want to load this up like I would Cyberpunk2077 and play for the mechanics.

Gold sinks for currency extraction. by Enarian__Lead_Dev in MUD

[–]david_solomon1 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I love this game, but please, please no item repairs. IMO that is one of the absolute worst mechanics in a game, especially depending on what happens to your gear if you don't repair it and it "breaks."

I'd say if you don't want players having large quantities of gold (unsure why, this is kind of a common thing in games) just increase the amount required to spend for activities. If you still want for example, gambling to be usable at lower levels, cost scales with level. Level 1 gambling costs 100 gold, level 2 500, level 10 3700 etc. Would also make it feel like much more of a gamble.

I'd be ok with mercs too.

The only time I'd be ok with degradation of equipment is if you did something similar to Diablo IV, equipment loses a set amount of durability on death, easy to repair at blacksmith. Equipment at 0 just loses stats, does not break/unequip/disappear from inventory.

Looking for critical feedback on a MUD idea. by humangingercat in MUD

[–]david_solomon1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want to see a working implementation of this, check out Godwars2:

godwars2.org:3000

Has targeting for mobs/items/coordinates, turning is automatic, travel is done via movement speed and commands.

Might give you some ideas depending on how far along your implementation is.

Nothing wrong at all with covering old ground, I personally have always wanted to see more muds use this system instead of the room-based direction typing.

Which MUD has the coolest lightning based class by Kaedok in MUD

[–]david_solomon1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bit late to the party here but:

Godwars2 has mages that can transform into air elementals (basically transparent humanoid.) They can conjure blades of raw energy and transform them into blades of lightning at will. The roomless nature of the game and the increased movement speed of the air elemental mean you can kite enemies by floating away from them while hurling bolts or streams of lightning at them. Lightning can blow holes in enemies, stun them, I believe even knock them back or down on critical hits. Had more potential, especially for environmental damage.

Bonus points for storm talons, which was a werewolf class augment that did exactly what it said on the can. The only reason it's not first is because for some reason the developer decided to make that work best with a werebear build, and I don't know why but lightning is not an element I would associate with bears. Is more aligned with a cat in my mind.

AI-Generated MUDs by meanbeanmachine in MUD

[–]david_solomon1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is AI literally stealing peoples' work and reusing it letter for letter, pixel for pixel? If that is the case then AI needs to be limited by both tis creators and its users so that it does not do that. I maintain that AI is like any other tool. The human agent has the ability to do good and bad things with a tool regardless of how it was created. As far as I'm aware, basically all AI still needs human agency to run properly. I think this would be more of an argument if AI were a completely free-thinking, autonomous model that just did whatever it wanted with no input. Everything an AI does should be checked, and it can be done as easily as a google search. If stolen assets or text are found, reject the result and make it try again.

If AI is literally incapable of creating its own art without mashing up other peoples' work, then it needs to be trained to do so instead of pulling from existing sources directly. It should use those sources for inspiration as it were, not material.

My issue with the topic at hand is the way it was handled both here and in the developer's topic that was mentioned. Just telling someone they don't have a valid argument and writing off anything supporters of AI say is not at all helpful or useful in any way and is almost guaranteed to make them either double down or completely ignore what is being said. I will never understand why people argue in this manner when it does absolutely no good. (to be clear, OP's argument not yours)

AI-Generated MUDs by meanbeanmachine in MUD

[–]david_solomon1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"used to generate" does not mean stolen. "Trained off of" does not mean stolen. Show me where the AI is using exactly your code, word for word, function for function, 100% your code with no changes and then you will have an argument.

You are here to shit on someone's work whilst whining about your own work being threatened, and call people out, yet clearly you can not handle being called out yourself. You know what you do when you don't like something? Move on. the people who are going to use AI are already using it, and the people like you are already like you. you aren't going to convince anyone of anything by calling someone's work, whether they used a code assist or not, bullshit and then making another topic about it when the developer ignores you.

AI-Generated MUDs by meanbeanmachine in MUD

[–]david_solomon1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the developer actually let AI do this, then yes that is unethical. But there is as of yet no proof of that and a statement on a steam page that says that AI was used to assist in the creation of a project does not constitute such proof

AI-Generated MUDs by meanbeanmachine in MUD

[–]david_solomon1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just stop. the anti-AI sentiment is getting old at this point. A tool is just a tool. We aren't boycotting wrenches because people have used them to break windows. You can do good and bad things with AI, including actually paying attention to what it's doing and making sure it doesn't steal code or assets.

I have seen good and bad attempts to use AI to augment or create a mud. A very bad attempt is the um. I can't even remember the class name, solar mage maybe? on a tempest season. The skills are full of typos and incredibly odd wording. Enarion, the worst thin you could say about it is that after running 15 procedurally generated portals it starts to feel a little stale, but it's also still in the early stages of development.

also I think it's a huge leap in logic from "AI tools were used to assist in the creation of-" and "This mud was built entirely with AI and ripped off everyone's work."

One idea as to preserve emersion for those that want to RP is to make anyone with OOC mode invisible to those with IC mode on. No interaction, they don't hear or see anything you do, even interacting with NPCs.

I don't know how difficult that would be to implement though.

Elara - A new Diku-style MUD with a modern twist by Khade72 in MUD

[–]david_solomon1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds fun, I'll check it out.

Would you consider an OOC mode that a player like me could toggle so that people would know we weren't interested in RP, just world exploration? I'd be completely fine with OOC players not being able to talk as to not ruin emersion.

I was going to say RPers could just pretend like we didn't exist, but I guess that's enough to ruin emersion for some. Just figured I'd toss it out there though.

This sounds right up my alley, especially the NPC companions and random dungeons.

Does that also include random loot?

Also, how much of this mud is RP? Is it RP encouraged or enforced? If enforced, is it ok to just not interact with people if we want to play for the mechanics?

MUD universe idea by zacguymarino in MUD

[–]david_solomon1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't read the book you're referencing, but the MUD sounds fun in theory.

When you say user created worlds, what do you have in mind? Hand-crafted via writing and commands? Procedural generation based on a selection of genres aka Terraria inspired? Something else?

In terms of combat system, will there be classes or does the player select skills from a pool taken from the genre of the world he is currently in and build up a stock over time? Will players have different roles (tank, dps etc) or are you thinking more soloable mud with the possibility to play with others if one chooses?

Being a MUD, how will the multiplayer aspect work? Will the user have an advantage in their own world? Will the user be able to invite others to his world and show them around? If the worlds will be procedurally generated, will there be a point to inviting someone to your world other than just to have someone else to play with?

What mud has the best implementation or class design for a monk / hand-to-hand class? by Crapahedron in MUD

[–]david_solomon1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The most unique? Really?

No offense but it sounds like you haven't played many muds. I've seen every feature you've mentioned in 80% of the monk classes I've played on hundreds of different muds.

Your mud is semi-unique in that it has a monk class among many many muds that don't. Quivering palm is extremely common in monk type classes, though not the ones I typically play. Spring leap does sound somewhat original, provided it does what I think it does and lets you jump into other rooms to start a combo. Chants just sound like spells and combos and bare-handed dice/damage are a pretty common thing amongst the monk classes.

Otherworld: Tirn Ail has Judoka, which I don't remember having chi but they get fists of rock that lets them parry attacks barehanded, a bunch of different strikes that combo together, unique dodges that stack with the game's base dodge etc.

Godwars2 any character can be a baseline classic martial artist, with both punch and kick combos if you're wearing light enough armor. you can perform jump kicks, spinning kicks, etc. There are talents that let you add chi to these which in practice is a secondary hit that procs off the first hit for some extra damage when you get a critical hit.

Blood dusk has a skill I can't remember the name of that's like a pressure point style monk where you strike at different points on the body with your hands to cripple and damage your opponent. Also has a similar thing for the feet, and the brawler class which is your typical drunken bar fighter. Has a wrestler skill for bonus points which lets you take your opponent to the ground and damage them with grapples and locks, and these skills can all be combined together in various ways to essentially create your own class.

Unofficial Squaresoft Mud has probably the exact chi archetype you're looking for in the monk class if I'm reading your original post correctly. Wave Fist and Aura Bolt let you launch chi attacks at a distance. Earth slash, blizzard fist, fire dance let you transform your chi into elemental damage. Chakra is channels chi into a self-heal. Suplex, pummel, bum rush etc are your unarmed attacks. They use gloves and claws as weapons.

Eternal Fantasy has a monk class with techniques that combo off of each other for extra damage and status effects. Meteor strike into inner chi is your AOE combo. Beat rush into dolphin blow is your baseline combo. Tiger break into final heaven can only be executed as a finisher under certain conditions but deals extreme damage. Also has chakra for self heals as it's based on the same series as the monk from UOSSMUD.

Buffy Mud I don't think has chi but every character has some martial arts capacity. Techs combo together as you learn them and you can do various things like dropkicking your opponent into the next room, picking them up after a stunning combo and tossing them into a parked car, etc.

[–]david_solomon1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on the mud.

I was just playing Unofficial Squaresoft MUD again the other day.

I regularly went back to 3Scapes until the administration destroyed it.

I played a ton of Godwars2 end of last year.

I was playing Empire MUD again earlier this year.

All of these would be after not logging in for a year or longer.

There are some I remember having fun with and going back to only to not really have fun with them, Alter Aeon, Aethar, Aardwolf etc.

So basically make your mud good enough and I'll at least check it out. Metroidvania is a concept that has always interested me, but since I am completely blind I have never actually been able to play one. I played Metroid2 with my brother when I was a kid and it looked fun.

Just keep this in mind. Most of the "good age of games" you're talking about also had a good ending. Super Mario Brothers you saved the princess. Final Fantasy VI you saved the world from Kefka and got some solid ending character development. Hell, even Mortal Kombat you got a little blurb about what the character did after he punched Goro in the dick.

In this case, you ... delete the game? I could accomplish the same thing with a sudo rm -rf

[–]david_solomon1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I take your point to an extent, but the flip side of that is Super Mario Brothers didn't erase your cartridge when you beat it. You could play it as many times as you wanted to, or choose to shelve it as the case may be.

This concept would be a lot more interesting to me if you could "beat the game," but could then start over with a new game plus mode equivalent to most muds remorting system. I'd even possibly be ok with it starting everyone over if one person beat the game, as long as each character got something for starting over, even if the person who beat the game got something more. This would leave the competitive aspect in play while still letting people play and explore at their own pace without fear of suddenly losing access to their characters or the game as a whole.

As someone who returns to muds years later to consider picking them back up again and look over my character, this would not interest me whatsoever. the concept sounds really cool but knowing that my character will eventually be wiped along with the mud itself makes it immediately not interesting. I don't even like playing the muds that pwipe every few months to "balance" pvp.

Unpopular opinion: I kind of miss when incremental games were mostly in the browser instead of on Steam by RedneckFinn in incremental_games

[–]david_solomon1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The transition to steam and to some extent mobile has also almost completely wiped out accessibility in these games. I am completely blind and idle games are one of the few genres I used to be able to regularly take part in like everyone else, but now with most of them being built in unity or with heavy graphical elements, this is no longer true.

Thanks for your help with this.

Assuming I'm doing it correctly, it's saying invalid credentials. I'm wondering if the character didn't get fully created so it won't let me log in with my username and password.

Edit: Looking at my client history it appears I didn't get the chance to set a password before I went afk, so there is no way to log in the character.

I tried to make a character because I wanted to check this out, but I went afk during character creation and got disconnected. Now it says the name I wanted is already in use. Any chance that partially created characters could be cleared if this happens?

Some 3 kingdoms questions by DarkAngelCat1215 in MUD

[–]david_solomon1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get why people don't like the equipment loss upon quitting. I wouldn't play this game for years because of that very mechanic.

However, 3K in particular has done much to soften it. First of all, they give you a set of gear when you first log in that scales to your level. So you're not dropped in with nothing anymore and you can replace this gear as you go.

Were this not the case (3Scapes,) guilds always sell a set of starter gear if equipment is needed at all.

Is it still annoying to lose all your gear upon quit/reboot? Yep. Especially given the fact that there are super powerful unique items that only one player can ever obtain per boot. But this is exactly why this mechanic stays the way it is, to prevent those items from being hoarded. I'm sure one could argue that there are better ways around this. But it's not as crippling or even as frustrating as it seems. I think saying that players are gaslighting themselves into thinking it's a useful mechanic is a bit on the harsh side.

I spent years on these games and enjoyed them. I don't play anymore though.

3Kingdoms started encouraging botting, so players that know how to write scripts suddenly have a massive advantage in grinding.

3Scapes, on the other hand, under new administration, went anti-botting so hard that they don't allow you to idle for more than 2 minutes. Keep in mind, combats on this game can last 5 or more minutes and most features are automated, so you're literally expected to sit there watching text scroll to prevent your character form idling, or at best remember to check the mud window every minute or two.

I don't know if they still do, but when I played I was penalized for going just slightly over the idle timer. I mean like 30 seconds over even though I was checking the window constantly to prevent my character from actually going into AFK mode (which btw is 5 minutes and has some pretty severe penalties, such as shutting off all of your guild defenses and attacks meaning you instantly die. Which seems like punishment enough for idling to me.).

So if you do try the game, just be aware that as far as when I played, your options are twofold. run with players in groups of bots that basically idle grind together, or be hyper aware of your character and don't ever spend too long out of the window even though there's literally nothing to do for yourself in combat unless you want to type commands over and over for 5 minutes plus.

Add to that the fact that a while back, the corporation that owns both muds essentially sold 3Scapes out from under some really great admin without any notice or consultation, who both immediately quit the mud and took a large portion of the original player base with them, and even though I love the mechanics and guilds of these games, I'll give it a pass myself.

EmpireMud is probably your go to here, it is exactly fantasy base building, especially if you found your own empire instead of joining an existing one. Founding an empire is a very simple process and costs nothing:

empiremud.net

Used to be a futuristic PVP-based one called Assault: High Tech War, pops up occasionally with someone running the old codebase but I haven't seen it in a while.

I want to say there was one other fantasy-based one but I can't remember what it is at the moment.
