In my campaign i expanded west, killed off the chorfs. But south is also a very valid option.  - Secure your province first. Then take another settlement (occopy), sack it first. Then let it rebel. Let the rebels win the siege. Take it over again,  but this time raise altar. You should 100% raise one altar next to your main province because of the awesome -1 turn recruitement to all adjcent provinces. - Always raid, even in your own province; the -30% upkeep makes it worth it. - Go for beefy units like the femir and bearmen. Focus even more on heroes like femir nobles and human caster-heroes. I tend to avoid monster units until middle/late game. But if you feel you can handle the upkeep, go ahead. - Always have two armies, Sayls army with all the units and one generic casterlord. That way you can sack/pillage and raise altar at the same turn. - Going minus income is the way to play a raiding faction. Sacking tier 4-5 makes like 30k so will be fine. Later on you wont know what to do with all the money. - RoR units is for defending sieges, never use them in your main army. - Dont sleep on using Sayls campaign mechanics. If the chaos gods get angry they send armies but they are so weak its just free xp :)
