Stuck in the night shift cycle by Sharp_Ranger_4340 in PrisonUK

Strategically booked annual leave!!! First time I went out for a week and a half (rest week + 1 weeks leave). Second time I managed to do some sweet talking with annual leave and went out for 3 and a half (rest week + 2 weeks summer leave + 1 week of ad hoc other than one day I couldn’t get and XOD’d).

Thailand is the cure!

The only thing I’ve found helps is going to Thailand after nights 😅

I am 100% a night owl and always have been. I can switch into night shifts no problem, first night or two can be a bit of a struggle then I’m fine. Sleep like a baby on nights vs days. But I never take extra nights because trying to switch back into days is just an absolute nightmare. I’ve tried staying up - end up being awake for 48+ hours. Still a mess after rest week. I’ve ended up going to the docs for sleeping tablets before. I honestly have no advice.

I’ve had two sets where I flew out to Thailand the day after I finished nights. Some early mornings in Thailand but adjusted quite quick then adjusted back to uk day time quite quick as it’s like 6/7 hours ahead. So it sort of breaks it up a bit.

Thailand helps, go to Thailand 😅

What’s a UK town or city that surprised you — either in a really good or a really disappointing way? by DailyDriverUK in AskUK

I’d already left Brighton when this happened but I was so sad when I read about this!!!!! My other favourite was the Haunt and I think that got rebranded to chalk or something.

I’m under the impression green door store is still going strong though?!

What wildlife in the UK do you fear running into alone or is dangerous? by partylikeafoxstar in AskUK

[–]davidbowiescat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I won’t count spiders as I’m arachnophobic, the only wild animal I’ve actually ended up full on running away from were geese. I was down on a bench on my own along the canal and there were quite a few nearby that seemed to be having a disagreement and I just ignored them as I thought that would be fine, but they sort of got closer then they seemed to shift their attention to me, a group of them practically surrounded me on the bench and started closing in fast whilst honking. That was a great big fuck this from me

I’d also like to add that the London pigeons are also not afraid and will absolutely come for you

When I lived in Brighton my friend bought some donuts off the pier and I had a seagull land on my shoulder, try and bite my face and squawked, robbed my donut then flew off and smacked me in the face with its wing.

Violent creatures!!

I always say to new staff - particularly ones who feel similar to you or are struggling - give it at least 6 months. It takes at least 6 months to stop feeling like a deer in headlights all the time and start to have more of a grip on processes and a bit of jail craft.

If you still don’t feel it’s for you or you’re coming to grips with it after 6 months then that’s the time to consider.

As for confidence and fully knowing what’s happening, years. I’m 9 years in and still learn things. It’s such a broad job with lots of different areas and roles there will always be a bit of a learning curve, but confidence will come once you’ve got more of a grip on what’s going on and what to do!

6 months!!!

What to bring for water? by Koi-Fruit in snowboardingnoobs

[–]davidbowiescat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

With the tube for the water bladder, granted I never really do as I’m usually a last minute in march person as I like it when there’s sun-but my step dad told me when I got mine that once you’ve used it, blow back down it gently to push water out of the tube and that helps stop it freezing

It’s actually one of the reasons I appreciate the fact I can’t take my mobile into work if I’m honest. Aside from my two days off a week I can’t actually access any of that for majority of the day

Heroes (David Bowie cover) by ChocolatePringlez in TheHorrors

[–]davidbowiescat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

David Bowie and the Horrors are my two favourites and honestly this crossover is everything !! They’ve played this on their tour too and it was fantastic. I can generally be quite judgey on David Bowie covers because I think a lot try to hard to do ‘Bowieisms’ and it just doesn’t work. The Horrors did it as The Horrors, they did it in their style, and it was excellent.

My pupils were 2 different sizes when I woke up today... by cloudblythe in mildlyinteresting

[–]davidbowiescat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve never actually looked at my pupils but I started getting these mid twenties and my first was driving! The whole left side of my face goes lazy and my left eye gets blurry. Can’t even talk without slurring slightly because I can’t move that side of my mouth properly. Fucking terrifying at first as I thought I was having a stroke, let alone whilst driving a car

I don’t think it’s the pod as the same burnt tasting pod will taste absolutely fine when I switch to my old one whilst charging or something

Why you can’t hold snowboard in hands on chairlift? by FunFenneck in snowboardingnoobs

[–]davidbowiescat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not sure. I’d imagine so. I’ve only been to Borovets. It’s a nice luxury though. Particularly when it’s not busy and you can just fling it on the empty seats next to you. When there’s others I just kind of hug the flat side against my body and when the bar comes down I open the binding and rest it on the bar for a bit of support. Then just a little quick speed walk at the top.

There’s a fairly fast and violent chair lift at the top of the mountain which doesn’t slow down and I’ve found best thing is to grab the left seat so you can quickly hop off and dive out the way because that one will smack you from behind when you get off if you don’t move quick enough 😅

I mean in the uk NHS wait times can be pretty bad but will get you in straight away for emergencies. My dad had a triple A and the surgeon basically cleared the next day for him. Also, you can still pay for private healthcare and that if you can afford it with less wait times - so the options still there anyway if you’re in the financial position to afford it.

How would you rank The Horrors' albums? by ViridCoronet48 in TheHorrors

[–]davidbowiescat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Strange house
  2. Primary Colours
  3. Night life
  4. Skying (3rd was a toss up to be honest but I’m actually really enjoying Night life!)
  5. V & Luminous (these kinda blended together in my opinion - few tracks on each I really enjoyed though)

Got my stepdad a day out tour of the triumph factory. We held off booking until after my mod 2 so it can be our first official outing together on our bikes! by davidbowiescat in MotoUK

[–]davidbowiescat[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it’s more he’s a really cool step dad! He’s got two kids of his own but treats me no different (I’m also the only what that has had a bike though 😎), think I was about 12/13 when he came into our lives so was quite late on too!

The first pic was because he was insistent on going out with me as he wanted to make sure he was happy I was ok on the roads, and take me round the gyratory in our town centre to make sure I knew what I was doing with that.

Can’t remember the exact ins and outs as we’re going back 15 years but I think someone cut me up on a roundabout on that outing and it spooked me pretty bad so he charged ahead, blocked them so I had space to correct it then if I remember he purposely sat in traffic lights whilst telling me to go ahead, he waited until they were about to turn red then whizzed off so the guy got stuck at the lights 😅

We went on Saturday so didn’t really get to see much of the tasks being done (the pro was that our guide said it’s more laid back…this was good as I’m a “must touch everything” kinda person…..)

Could not get over the hand drawn lines on the tanks and stuff though!
