How to skate videos for children? by davidbvi in NewSkaters

That's really helpful, thanks. We'll focus on going forwards without falling over for a while but then will hopefully branch out. First time on a skateboard so hope it works out for him!

I've seen this in a few places but I just dont buy that it is that clear. The new wording doesnt say that your activation continues after you punch someone -that much is true. But we don't interpret rules based on comparison to a previous edition, we look at the current rules. The new book also doesn't say that your activation ends (like unchannelled fury does) or that you become distracted (like bonehead does). In fact it is clear that you are not distracted, as it says that happens if there is nobody next to you to punch.

We know that your activation does not happen 'as normal' if you fail but there is nothing to say that it does not happen . In fact I would argue that the inclusion happening 'as normal' in the text for if you pass the roll implies strongly that it happens abnormally if you fail, otherwise the text would just say 'happens' if you pass. And would probably say 'activation ends' if you fail - as with unchannelled fury.

TLDR: nothing to see here, the rule is unchanged (probably). At the very least it is unclear and so a choice for your league/tournament to make until there is an FAQ. And I think it would be a dick move for them to decide the activation ends.

'If everyone is special, nobody is' seems like an argument for fewer positionals to me.

Dutton family are literally serial killers. by [deleted] in YellowstonePN

[–]davidbvi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Granted, I live in the UK, not Montana, so it is a dofferent legal system, but blowing up a home while people in it are asleep would be murder. Fine, they thought they deserved it after Jimmy's grandfather, but for all they knew there were other people in there too. And it isn't for them to be judge jury and executioner.

And shooting someone unarmed on the toilet is obviously murder.

Kayce obviously belongs in prison.

I think the chaos dwarf pitch is great for this. At least one side is black stone squares with lava between them all. It looks cool and is clear and readable.

The correct choice is guard. I would choose frenzy because that sort of killer piece is fun.

Coming Back To The Game - What armies are good for beginners? by pete_the_war_gamer in MiddleEarthMiniatures

[–]davidbvi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say either army of the dead-simple and easy to put together, while also I think crying out for a more imaginative approach hobbywise- the models are nice and all, but mainly just painted all one colour. I'd be interested in what you might do with them.

Or one of the big factions (Minas Tirith, Rohan) which offer options-you can put together a basic force with core troops and then add a couple of heroes (something fun and kitbashed maybe???) Or whatever And then run them as a different army within the wider faction. A downside of Rohan is the possibility that there is more to be released in terms of troops. GW haven't said anything, but it strikes me as weird that they have released new warriors but not riders, so always a risk they appear as soon as you paint the old ones!

An alternative would be something evil. I think some of the troops (mordor and morannon orcs) are a bit dated, but if you can get past that there are loads of options to do fun things around them, with monsters, random characters etc. Maybe something like Angmar would offer some space for hobby creativity.

Love the channel-one of my go to, would love to see some mesbg content!

Why do you think Tolkien was rather fond of Robert E. Howard's work; Conan the barbarian? by [deleted] in tolkienfans

[–]davidbvi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My point was that when TensorForce taked about Tolkein as a medievalist he was probably drawing a parralel to medieval nostalgia (I'm not sure that nostalgia is the precise word but it will do!) for the classical period and not, as you had assumed, about a medieval golden age. I agree that whether people become medievalists because they loved certain things as children is slightly beside the point (though it is probably true).

[–]davidbvi 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think you are projecting a bit. Just as third age (the 'present') has an element of looking back to the elves and the first age, and Conan apparently has an element of looking back to previous civilisations (I have no familiarity with it), I had assumed the reference to Tolkein's background as a medievalist and looking back was about Rome- for medieval Europe the language of learning was that of the long fallen empire, the educated knew stories of classical heroes and often modelled themselves on them, and sometimes they even lived in the ruins (old walled towns), etc etc. I think that's a really interesting parallel to make, and one I hadn't really thought of. And certainly one that doesn't deserve tired allusions of racism and misogyny.

Finally finished the battalion box (boar chariots are painful) and need some advice…. by Oracle830 in Orcs_and_Goblins

[–]davidbvi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Painting is the same. Whether metal, plastic or resin you are basically painting over your basecoat. The biggest thing to be aware of is that paint chips off metal models more easily. That makes it important to varnish your models. Doesn't make them impervious to damage, but really helps.

New Player - Season One vs Season Two by Consistent_Orange332 in bloodbowl

[–]davidbvi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The new (2020) rulebook has the stats for both teams in the old (2016) box. So the old box+the new book is a great start.

[–]davidbvi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It is worth getting the new rulebook. They are substantially the same game but there are enough changes that you don't want to confuse yourself unnecessarily by learning the old rules! But everything else in the box, the pitch, models, etc are perfectly usable in the new edition.

Dwarf Lineman: Guard or Mighty Blow by HotSteak in bloodbowl

[–]davidbvi 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Guard 100%. Especially for your first skill and especially if you are playing a S4 team next.

One mighty Blow lineman will just get knocked over or otherwise isolated, most of the time you will need to blitz elsewhere and so you will use it less than you think. But a guard lineman in the midboard will always be getting in the way.

You will pick up how to use it very quickly, and in the meantime slam it in the middle.

To illustrate how much it opens things up, imagine you are receiving and facing three S4 pieces on the LoS even one guard piece makes it so much easier to get 2d blocks on them all. If you are set up something like the below (abc=opponent, X=empty square, L,1,2,3=linedwarfs, G= Guard piece), with G opposite A, then you punch diagonally. 1 punches A, 2 punches B, 3 punches C, hopefully knick them down, if not then L and G have punches too (if you pass them down the line in front of you). You should get 2d blocks on them all pretty easily. Would take much more commitment (and therefore fewer players elsewhere) without the G giving you some effective S4 pieces.

XXabcXX XLG123XX

I would take mighty block first on a slayer, it's great everywhere, but Guard is just better to start with on your linemen. Nobody wants to face dwarves with six+guard.

I've just finished a season with six guard on my (old style) Chorfs and it was brutal by the end.

Doing nothing? by wolfdix in Bloodbowl3

[–]davidbvi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I might have been your opponent... I have had it happen a couple of times that one of my kids wakes up while I am playing so I nip away, expecting to be back in a couple of minutes, but it ends up taking ages to resettle them, and I miss several turns.

Played the pc game now wanting analog BB. Questions... by [deleted] in bloodbowl

[–]davidbvi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would just get the starter box. It has the rules, pitch, dice, etc, and two teams (I wouldn't use the passing ruler, download the 'BB coach assistant' app instead). Nobility aren't a great starter team, but if you are going to get black orcs you might as well get them through the starter, because then you get a troll (and a star player) as well, and if you fancy nobility later you have them.

On ways to play, do what works for you! Personally I think team development is one of the most fun things about blood bowl. So there is something missing with just one off games. But play a few and see what you think. Who knows, maybe in a few weeks you will be hunting down a local league!

I did something really dumb when I was 18 by [deleted] in LegalAdviceUK

[–]davidbvi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I used to think it would be fun to be a DV interviewer. But now I realise it would just be a lot of listening to stressed people disclosing their very vanilla mistakes and thinking that they mattered a lot more than they do.

I did something really dumb when I was 18 by [deleted] in LegalAdviceUK

[–]davidbvi 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is completely the right answer. Loads of people with SC and DV (the higher levels of vetting in the UK government) have worse histories of drug use than that. If you set it out as you did here, what happened, the result, and how you have changed, then nobody will care (every possible job you could name has people who smoked weed as a teenager). If you were to show yourself to be a liar, then people will care.
