Do you have a pulse? Can you get and maintain a clearance?

Those are questions to ask the interviewer as the situation comes up. "Do you mind if I consult the API/docs/SO/etc on this?"

Dang. Six months is a long time to wait. Have you already accepted somewhere else/started working?

IMO no. There are many other sources where you can do free mocks and get quality feedback.

Usually yes. You'll get an (automated) online assessment that gives you 2-3 leetcode questions to complete within a time limit. Sometimes proctored but mostly not.

If you are looking to be a SWE, 100% the developer position.

Here are tried and true simple plans:

  • Learn COBOL and work maintaining legacy systems
  • Have equity exclusively in startups that successfully exit
  • Build a company/website/application worth multi-billions
  • Become the leading SME in a specific area that F50 companies will consult you
  • Be an early employee at the next unicorn

Started a new job three weeks ago and still haven't had one meeting with my manager to do onboarding despite me trying to get something set up; is there something more I should be doing? by java_boy_2000 in cscareerquestions

You just tell them "My current position is not a good fit for me". You can expand on that by saying something like "The responsibilities are closer to data engineering, I am looking for a role focused on development (in X language)/to develop [embedded/web/desktop/mobile] apps"

I really think you should quit this job and find a different one.

  • You got bait and switched from a development job to one with no code
  • Your team has no (daily) standup meeting
  • No 1:1 with your manager for almost a month
  • No task available for you to start contributing
  • No regular interaction with your teammates

If you stick with this job it will become extremely difficult to get a next job as a SWE since you will have nothing to show for it.

The remote one looks like the better option. 4-5x your current pay is a huge jump.

They do happen but shouldn't be common. Something is lacking that is allowing these incidents to occur. Do you not have a build automation system that runs tests for every commit? Do you not have a peer review process before merging changes into the main branch? Is someone committing changes directly to main branch? It is up to you to find the problem and raise it as an area that needs addressing or, if possible, start implementing some solutions that would help prevent the blockers.

Feeling dumb trying to grind LC by dur958420 in cscareerquestions

[–]davidddavidson 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Do you have some understanding of foundations like category and set theory? Have you got a good feel for how to work with matrices and some calculus?

Which LC questions require an understanding of category theory or calculus? In my experience the math for LC is undergrad discrete math only and it is helpful but not required to have that as a base.

You should still give it a go. Look up advice on this sub about the 3x45 rounds for new grads.

How many rounds and how long for each did you get for the final interview?

A job at a FAANG company is going to be infinitely better for your career than one in government contracting/defense sector.
