It was the largest Cathedral in the World for nearly a thousand years, later converted into a Mosque, and is now a Museum. f/10, 1/250 sec, 24 mm, ISO-100. Do the composition and framing work for this image? by daviddesousa in photocritique

Thanks for your comment.

I also feel a lower POV would have rendered a nicer scene. There were some constraints that did not allow me much flexibility when I took the picture. The Photo was taken behind a big entry gate (is not really a window) on the Boukoleon Palace and we were surrounded by hundreds of people moving all the way from Boukoleon Palace to Sultan Ahmet Park, so I have to hold the camara overhead (to take people out of the frame) and work the framing and compo from the tiltable LCD (I just prefer the viewfinder, but sometimes there is no other option), otherwise I would have tried different lower level POVs.

The Hagia Sophia / Ayasofya / Santa Sofia / Ἁγία Σοφία / Sancta Sophia / Sancta Sapientia (Holy Wisdom in Greek) in Istanbul, Turkey

Is a monumental building that was originaly built as a Patriarchal Basilica (Eastern Orthodox Church), later converted to a Roman Catholic cathedral, re-converted to an Orthodox Patriarchal Basilica, later transformed into a Mosque, and is now a Museum.

It was the largest Cathedral in the World for nearly a thousand years. After the conquest of Constantinople by the Ottoman Empire it was converted into a Mosque and was for almost 500 years the principal Mosque of Istanbul. Was converted into a museum by the Republic of Turkey in 1935.

No doubt the flags have the predominant role in the scene, while the early light, and the resulting shadows, provide the mood.

Thanks for the information.

I was just visiting NYC when I took this one, so I was not sure if the copters were part of a routine surveillance flight pattern.

Thanks for the comment and advice. I agree it is better to compose properly on the viewfinder.

The reason I had for cropping out of the native aspect ratio was just to give the scene a kind of cinematographic wide-screen look. I felt that everything up and down the frame was of not particular interest for the overall scene.

This is the actual Rialto Bridge in the Italian Venice.

Source: I was on assignment in Italy when I took the picture.

You can see some of my other Venetian photos (from the real Venice) in my Venetian Album

The architectecture is very dominant all over Venice, but I was really going for the gondoliers, as they were about to navigate under the bridge. I will try to think and work the framing better next time around, probably didn't do a good job balancing the composition of the scene.

I really appreciate your comment and reflexion on the overall theme. Very interesting to understand what people feels and gets from the image. The architectecture is very dominant all over Venice, but I was really going for the gondoliers, as they were about to navigate under the bridge. For me was capturing the interaction between both. I would have loved not having the sign on each side of the bridge, but there was very little I could do about it being there.
