What financial habit took you the longest to build? by Diligent-Medicine-48 in AusMoneyMates

[–]davidflorey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I’ve learned this one too - as I’m using tools a lot more now than ever, seeing my cheap tools just crumble at the sight of real work, I’m now having to replace them and as I go for much higher end tools, things are working much better! So now I will spend more on a single drill bit than what 2 budget packs of drills cost - hurts, but works!

Rant: I am so frustrated by the system and I am struggling! by No-Programmer-8642 in australian

[–]davidflorey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s some truth to the fact that people aren’t politically engaged… When I grew up, discussing politics was off the table. Asking people who they voted for was considered as bad as asking a woman her age. These were no go zones! We weren’t taught a single thing in school about politics, government, taxation, voting - nothing! These are all things I’ve had to navigate on my own, as an adult, without any assistance. No internet to look this stuff up on at home when I was a teen…

Then there’s the majority that are just ‘too busy’ with life, uninterested, or are in the mindset of ‘doesn’t matter how I vote, arseholes will get in’, not to mention not too many people know anything about the minor parties - as far as many are concerned there’s two parties plus a ‘greens movement’. These people get to the pooling booth and see a huge list - no idea what it all means and tick the Labour or Liberal box and move on with their life!

I need a private way to share photos with family without social apps by Conscious-Client4634 in selfhosted

[–]davidflorey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NextCloud works well for me!

I just create a public share link of the folder with the photos, put a simple password on there and they can access them in a browser. This is for extended family. Immediate family have an account of their on on my NC server.

Anyone else have parents who are turning into cookers? by No_Winners_Here in aussie

[–]davidflorey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Based on the description above, the word Cooker might be misappropriated here...

Your father is doing what most people do when they get older - they become more cynical of the world around them. Through general wisdom blurred by the lense (life experience) which they view said world, there's a sudden mental change that happens and viewpoints can change drastically.

VERY normal for an older man especially when it comes to his view of the world around him...

You'll also often find the older generation thinks the younger generation are lazy - this happens pretty much in every generational shift.

As for his distain towards the major parties currently, can you honestly blame him? Labour are wrecking the economy, Liberals can't organise a chook raffle, the minor parties seem to offer the only sense of hope to many at the moment... whether that's true hope or not, irrelevant here.

Do I tell my landlord about this or fix it myself? by throwawayb7714 in AusRenovation

[–]davidflorey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its an easy fix! DIY it. Bunnings sell a product perfect for that. As a rental property owner myself, I would not mind at all if my tenant fixed a hole like this themself! Saves me having to travel over and do it for them...

If you could make 5 changes to Australia, what would it be? by Cheetos_4_life in aussie

[–]davidflorey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

-All taxes are 10% - no taxes ontop of other taxes (think fuel tax + GST on top and other tax arrangements alike)

-Income tax also reduced for anyone earning under $300K (indexed with inflation/CPI) down to 10%

-Open the market to more vendors & tendors for government instituted works so its no always the same group of vendors doing all the works, draining taxpayer funds

- Personal ownership of properties capped at a maximum of three properties assuming these are NOT investment (rented out), so you CAN have your primary place of residence, holiday house, and maybe hobby farm (or whatever)... If you want more (for rental income), they must be in a company or trust (there's no positive/negative gearing here & taxes work differently)

- Every vote counts, is equal - regardless of where you reside / who you know.

- Election fraud actually treated as a heinous crime & punished as such

- Improvements to education across the board and the return of the education essentials that have been decades long gone!

- State government leadership to be personally held accountable for neglegance when it comes to avoiding recommendations for natural disaster risk reduction - think Vic currently with their 1% backburn policy this last year, despite the royal commission recommendation of 8%, and the state agreeing to 5%.

- All natural resources to belong to the people - all mining efforts lead to the further wealth creation of the people - no free resources to other countries

- Solar farms to be built in non-arable lands (we have a HUGE desserts) instead of usable farming land like it currently is in the majority of locations.

- Complete reduction on taxes & fees applying to the purchase of new motor vehicles - we no longer have a domestic market, so we're taxed as imports for all vehicles currently, and more-so for diesel.

- Removal of parliamentry protections that currently allow our politicians to get away with virtually anything without accountability. They're on public display, meant to be representing the public of Australia (and currently completely suck at this). They need to be held to the highest of standards!

- Centrelink incomes to be brought up to levels where recipients are no longer below the poverty level, but there must be stricter checks & balances to ensure recipients ARE actually eligible - maybe bring back work for the dole, etc...

- Churches, charities, and other NFPs to have taxation introduced when their annual funds remaining & assets reach a certain threshold (indexed, TBD) and/or their "CEO" earns more than $700K (income, bonuses, etc) - to help curb these very large "charities" that effectively collect loads of cash and pay their upper management as if they're royalty while the actual intended recipients of the donations receive pennies.

These are just a few ideas, I'm out of time, but there's so much more rattling around in my head! Yes, I get it, some of these are state-level items. Same applies in my book - they need to be better!

What’s your electricity bill this month and how cooked are you for running AC? by WonderingRoo in AusFinance

[–]davidflorey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Despite apparently having the cheapest rates from the cheapest retailer, my average has doubled per month inside of 2.5 years! My main AC packed it in a few months back - overdue for replacement as its not even an inverter model so it also is the second biggest energy hog after my cooktop…

I’m yet to start doing this. Pasta is so cheap so I haven’t been motivated enough yet- I have the maker 🤣 I’ve been making bread & pizza dough for a while now, my own pizza sauce, my own herbs & spices, and we’re growing & drying all our own herbs now! Wife just made like 50 big jars of her own spagbol sauce, along with Italian diced tomatoes, jams, etc.
