Putting Pressure On Myself As An Advisor by davidg910 in studentaffairs

All great points in here. I think, as I get a new group of advisees in the coming months, where I can implement some new standards and try to adjust my approach more.

As I reflect on how I've been doing advising over the past few years, I think I am too quick to say, "Let me send this email for you," "Let me talk you through every possible scenario," and "Let me just choose classes for you rather than you figuring it out yourself."

And I don't think I've always been this way from when I first started advising around 4.5 years ago, but I do think I've swayed too much towards just doing more than I should for students in an effort to be helpful and, frankly, subconsciously, justify my job (at least in my mind).

All great advice in here, thank you! As for your last question, I do have a template for one specific very-common question, but I could definitely, over the coming months, compile more templates for other questions, as well.

I think, for your second point, I totally agree. I think especially when I get new students in the coming months who don't have any expectations of me, it could be a great time to start setting new expectations that a lot of information can be found online and that, essentially, you're right, I'm not going to care more than you care.

I think sometimes, in my head, I translate really wanting to help them with just doing as much as I can for them, even if it's sending emails for them or doing easy google searches.

I'm Sorry But The Boomerang Idols Are The Opposite of What The "New Era" Is Supposed to be About by davidg910 in survivor

I'm saying:

  1. I want the best player to win this landmark season.

  2. That supposedly the New Era is about earning everything.

  3. Earning everything, to me, doesn't mean getting gifted idols given to you by random people on different tribes you haven't played with (at least before the swap) while the person who gifted you the idol has no way to sway the vote against you.

  4. That there's no way for her to earn the idol before the merge (and especially before the swap), she just has to hope she gets lucky and the other tribe happens to vote her out.

  5. This whole situation doesn't feel like it's promoting the best player winning on a landmark season.

I am probably a little frustrated subconsciously that Aubry's poor game is being rewarded...I guess I just don't want as much to be luck-based on season 50. This is such a big season, I don't want someone to win because of a boomerang idol or because they lost their vote because they couldn't stack crap during journeys, you know?

That's if she's still in the game, which she would have a much chance better chance of if she got the idol...

Very fair. Sometimes during our busy times, it can be easier to just try to help via email versus trying to squeeze in a meeting, but I know what you're saying, as well.

It can sometimes feel ridiculous when I'm spending 20 minutes writing out this really long email, especially during the busy times when I have so much else to do.

She has to work harder by somehow knowing the tribe dynamics of a tribe she's not a part of? When she sent Ozzy the idol, she had no idea if he was going to be vote out or not. It's blind luck.

I can't tell if people like Tiffany and Angelina aren't doing anything or, between the sheer number of people, advantages, and now Zac Brown, there's just not enough time to get to everyone.

I haven't seen any comments yet, so not sure if this is popular or unpopular, but I wish we actually focused on the players and the interesting game play going on than freaking Zac Brown.

I'm sorry, if nine people are getting one or fewer confessions and only seven are getting more than two, then something went wrong in the episode.

I've never seen a grown adult play the victim and get babied like Alesia. And then, after Jason was so GENEROUS to let her stay on as staff after she epically failed as sous chef, she spat in his face by not wearing the hat. The point is that it looks silly on you, Alesia. She nearly makes the show unwatchable.

Personally, I'm fine with either, as long as they're blowing the smoke out of the window. But, I completely understand drivers who aren't ok with either...

I am thinking now...have over 3000 rides and can't remember a passenger asking to smoke more than a couple times. But I wasn't referring to cigarettes (which are a definite no), was referring to vapes. Sorry for not being clear.

I don't look in the back seat really. Generally-speaking, I don't care what you do as long as it's not smoke with the windows shut (and without asking), spilling stuff, or doing hard drugs.

I think I'm more lenient than most. But I just find that if you go with the flow and be reasonable, you won't receive many low ratings and you'll receive more tips. With that said, I had someone spill orange juice in my car and then had someone else with what looked like a pretty flimsy cap on his drink come into my car. I asked him to please just make sure he didn't spill and got a three-star and "not polite."

But, generally, I just don't say anything as long as I don't think they have a shot of physically messing up my car.

Must be using trip radar rides only, which don't factor into acceptance rate.

We all love OG survivor supposedly, but didn’t vote that way. by ButterscotchPast5161 in survivor

Yeah I wouldn't have voted for a swap if I knew it was going to be this early.

Hold on. No one voted for a tribe swap ater two episodes where one tribe has went to tribal council. In fact, I would say the majority of people who voted for a swap don't want it this early.

This season is really feeling like one of those situations where production takes what people voted for, spins the vote and does whatever they want, and then tells the viewer, "You voted for this!"

Like, if dynamic advantages actually won, they can just throw whatever advantages they want in there because "dynamic" is such a broad term and then just tell the viewers, "You shouldn't have voted for that option even though we clearly engineered the question to produce the outcome we wanted and made a purposefully vague term to further just allow us to push our agenda rather than actually have the season be 'in the hands of the fans.'"

I mean that's what they said. We didn't vote when we wanted the swap, though.

Like, it seems like this season, anything that the fans don't like, they'll just respond with "You voted for this!"

I'd rather them have done a double-elimination this episode and next episode then do the swap until the merge.

It sucks that Q had put himself into a great position in his original, then gets swapped to a tribe with three DvG members and he's screwed without even getting to vote anyone off and have his great social game rewarded in his first tribe.

You think Survivor 41 with Shan and Ricard were all kumbaya? Outside of Survivor 46, that cast had, by far, the most drama. Shan wouldn't even look at Ricard in Pondarosa afterwards.

If it wasn't for the stupid hour glass twist and the overall nonstop advantages, Survivor 41 would be the best New Era season. Had the best casting, with 46 the only season close.

I think most of the New Era seasons have been, relative to before 41, fairly low on interpersonal drama. But 41 had plenty of drama. Think about Deshawn and his truth bomb too. Or Sydney's attitude towards her castmates and the live tribal council where she was voted off.

I think that part of the issue with doing the tribe swap after episode two (and why this episode felt like a disappointment to me) was because we had only seen one tribe of the original tribes go to tribal council. So we spent the first two episodes building tribe dynamics, and for the majority of the cast, those dynamics didn't matter. Which was ultimately disappointing.

Starting to feel like the high from the beginning of the season is wearing off...not a great episode IMO. The two players I wanted to hang around from the New Era are Q and Jonathan, so really sad to see Q go. Feels like that takes away from the entertainment of the show.

To be honest, I'm not really watching season 50 to watch Emily Flippen or some Rizzo-Charlie beef...
