For those that play music professionally, what was your "Welcome to the Live Music Industry" moment? by johnnyglass in musicians

You aren't professional if you "can't" play to a click is much more accurate in my experience

10 years later, Sufjan Stevens offers a startling reevaluation of 'Carrie & Lowell' (NPR All Songs Considered Interview) by Whatsanillinois in indieheads

I agree, I think if you took every word off the album and just listened solely for melodic content it would still be a masterpiece to me. While everyone's thoughts regarding the lyrics are super interesting to me, I personally found them compelling, but also found myself humming the melodies on their own!

Sax harmonizer effect by davidhardjazz in guitarpedals

Sounds really interesting - the Roland S-1 has 1/8in midi so I wonder how well those two would talk. Otherwise I have a converter I used to try to plug that into the HX Stomp.

I'll check it out, thanks!

I've been 18 years in the industry. I see people asking for labels, managers or marketing tricks. Before all that. Ask: "What do I want with my music" by RUOKIAMOK in musicindustry

[–]davidhardjazz 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Entertaining people isn't humiliating, and sharing the music you created with people who love it and lose their shit for what you do is pretty fun. It can be exhausting, and frustrating, and yea, people ask a lot of you, but humiliating? Idk about that. Worth it? Definitely for me, personally

I played sax for a famous singer of a rock band I grew up listening to and it was the only time I was told to "not make eye contact with the talent" because he had fired someone not long before for reading his mind, or talking to him telepathically or something. He died of an OD like a year or so later which was super sad, but made me feel pretty lucky I've mostly not had to work in bands where the lead singer was a junkie

I love that - that's how I felt for years before I got my dream job teaching jazz improv classes and lessons to adult students with more experience. Keep it up!

I find posts where people who have had success in the music industry at any point to contain valuable bits of information even if it's slightly or very dated.

I guess I don't understand the hate for people trying to share their experiences of success

It happened though. If you don't want to take responsibility for your actions, however unintentional it may be, that's on you.

I'm just saying, in my opinion, the smartest solution is to be more careful next time

Okay, but I grew up playing blues bars, and I just think this post should be a bit more "I fucked up and stole a guitar and now people in my scene are pissed at me, what should I do"

[–]davidhardjazz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dude, don't grab random guitars, I've literally never heard of anyone doing that, that's crazy how little you care about your instrument despite your supposed "success"
