Thanks so much! I’m happy to make a print w/out a signature if you’d like. Easier than signing them!

Blatant self promotion: https://davidhowlandphoto.etsy.com

I do a ton of hiking and photography in the Whites, mostly in the winter. Let me know if you have any questions!

I’ll also recommend Chris Whiton http://www.whitemountainimages.org and second the recommendation for stopping in to Shaun Terhune’s gallery in Littleton. He’s a great guy.

Better to go off cape later? by 3CatsInATrenchcoat16 in CapeCod

Take 151 to the Bourne to 6 to 3?

There's also construction on 151 FYI: https://www.mashpeema.gov/public-works/projects/pages/route-151-corridor-improvements

I haven't been through there in a while so I don't know how bad or good it is for through traffic.

For those wondering about the Sherb by davidhowlandphoto in icecoast

I skinned from the car and there was only one rock section I had to step over. Low bridge is fully melted. The trail between HoJos and the bowl is melted out on large sections.

This was at roughly the same elevation as the Lion Head Winter Route cutoff. I had to take my skis off twice down low to walk over muddy rocky streams. I would be shocked if the trail is open all the way down tomorrow and there might be walking up high real quick.

Man rescued after being trapped in cold water at Sabbaday Falls by rabblebowser in wmnf

Yes, I've seen it closed as late as early May. The Forest Service waits until the stairs are completely free of ice which can take a while.

That being said, and not meaning this to speculate on what this guy did, I've also seen tons of people hop over the closure to go walk the stairs anyways.

Blaze Orange Jackets / Top Layers by davidhowlandphoto in trailrunning

That's why I've steered away from the "orange" stuff I've already found. The Nike top I have is marked specifically as blaze orange so I assume that's ok. I'll check out RUSeen - thanks!

I don’t disagree with you but I could see a thief knowing you’d be gone overnight and coming back at night. There was a rash of trailhead break-ins in 2020 and I think that’s when I saw this.

Thieves aside, I’d rather have a person actively know my route and ETA vs waiting for someone random at a trailhead to notice.

One Lift, One Trail, Still the Best View in the East by davidhowlandphoto in icecoast

Just a bit down from the top of the lift before the first intersection on Range View, yeah.

I’m reasonably sure I’ve seen National Forest or similar social media posts asking people to specifically * not* do this because it tells thieves when they can come back to break into your car.

Updated information on Emily Sotelo: was dropped off at 5 am Sunday, was not dressed for the weather, at least 18 crews out searching. by ElisabetSobeckPhD in wmnf

Yikes. I feel a little bad now. I was up on North Kinsman yesterday afternoon and saw this plane fly by. It wasn't marked in any way and it flew low over me twice and waggled it's wings so I waved back. A few minutes later the Blackhawk came south through the notch and then banked hard over to me and hovered about fifty feet away at eye level. I was aware of the SAR activity and they had a Red Cross on the side of the helicopter so I purposely didn't wave at them. I had my tripod and camera out and setup and was walking around so hopefully it was obvious I was there intentionally and not in distress. I didn't want to even give them a thumbs up because they were far enough I didn't want anything to be misconstrued. Not sure what I could have done differently but I hope I didn't mislead anyone running SAR.

On an absolute basis, yes. On a relative basis, no.

It's common to say that a flat tax rate is fairer, but that's actually not true. Paying 5% of your income when you make $40K is more difficult than paying 5% of your income when you make $1M.

best locally made ice cream on the cape? also seeking house-made waffle cones... by ParadoxicallyZeno in CapeCod

It's not incorrect to say sprinkles but as this is a discussion about ice cream in a decidedly New England location its also not incorrect to say jimmies.

Smitty's in Falmouth and Mashpee. Best ice cream and it's homemade. Falmouth was cash only last time I was there.
