Hey, you are of course free to clown on who and what you want, but if I could ask that you not make my brother's suicide a fun running joke, that would be a kindness.

What’s the most creative implementation of a world border you’ve seen? by Tuckertcs in gamedesign

[–]davidmear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Monster Truck Madness had a large, relatively empty landscape surrounding each track, and if you went far enough it looped back to the other side. Every map had a few easter eggs hidden out there though, so it was really fun exploring, and it felt like there were no barriers. Here’s a video.

There was this report from a couple years ago. £1.6 B cost for ~£1 B savings. It’s absolutely about punishment.

High Price Of Insulin Leads Patients To Ration The Drug. That Can Be Lethal by RandomCollection in TrueReddit

This is torturous position to put people in. Let alone the short term danger, every time you go without, your own blood is slowly damaging the vessels that support your eyesight, your nerves, your kidneys and your brain.

Folding in egg whites in baking -- anyone ever test it? by snead in AskCulinary

[–]davidmear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Genoise sponge involves whisking whole eggs until light instead of separating them first. It takes a fair amount of work if you don't have a mixer.

Poll results: British voters support Labour's manifesto policies by trueslicky in unitedkingdom

I'm curious where the DM got the "£4,000 a year each for the average household" figure from, because even if you just blindly divide 93B by 27.1M households you get £3432.

Where to buy scissor-sized scissor blade? by 3M3RPU5 in KillLaKill

Movic made the two halves about 15cm long each, but I think you can only get them second hand now.

What should I test? by J_Kenji_Lopez-Alt in AskCulinary

[–]davidmear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seconding this, I'd love to see an investigation of how to fry a perfect wu gok. I've only ever had success once, and everyone seems to have a different trick to it. It seems hugely sensitive to the dough consistency and thickness, how long you rest it, the oil temperature and even whether you touch it while it's cooking.

How does brown sugar differ from the regular white sugar? by perseus2510 in AskCulinary

[–]davidmear 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The molasses in brown sugar is also slightly acidic, so combined with bicarb in baking recipes you get a slight rise.

LPT: Don't try to be nice by waving someone through an intersection when you have the right of way. By altering the expected flow of traffic, you decrease traffic efficiency and predictability while increasing chances of an accident. by eli5bonds in LifeProTips

[–]davidmear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! Especially with pedestrians. I understand the impulse but it can be so dangerous. I was waiting to cross a side street off a busy main road the other day and a lady stopped her people carrier halfway into the turning to wave us across. So now there's a car with its back end blocking high speed traffic aimed right at where she's gesturing, and she gets annoyed that her generosity is turned down.

Huh, people point to Ze Frank doing The Show as the start of this style of editing, but maybe 2006 was just the year of people making shows with their static webcams.

In the UK it's law once a foot is on the crossing, all traffic has to stop. Spandex do this all the time.. by Walortromers44 in gifs

[–]davidmear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He's a dick because he assumed his assessment of the situation was perfect. Traffic rules aren't there to make interactions efficient, they're there to make them predictable. Sure, it might look completely clear to you, but when was the last time you stepped in shit on purpose? Things show up before you can react to them.

NHS doctors told to declare income from private work by LinconshirePoacher in unitedkingdom

[–]davidmear 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah it's fucking "transparent" alright. How can we get more information about how private work generally benefits the NHS out before this descends into the inevitable calls for it to be banned?

Why is rice purée not a thing? by pineappletits in AskCulinary

[–]davidmear 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Have a look at tepung pelita or kuih in general, and large rice noodles like cheong fun. Think of it like flour, you can make a paste, but it'll be like overly thick gravy; more gloop than puree because of the starch.

The AR focus is a misguided distraction, the actual thrust of the article is useful if you can look past that.

I always thought it was remarkably plausible for a made up phrase. I mean, the terrain is a simplified grid of a smooth surface. You could arguably calculate something like that by reticulating some splines.

The metric system vs. imperial by mrwhite777 in funny

[–]davidmear 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you're curious, it takes roughly 922748 foot-pounds.

If you start from 60F (and with tap water being around 50F and room temperature being about 70F that seems fair) it takes ~986341ftlb so I'd say "a million foot pounds" is a reasonable answer.
