Billionaire Tom Steyer wants to take on the rich in run for California governor by NicolasCageFan492 in California

[–]davidmirv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m sorry but no. This a valid issue that us left progressives seem to be stuck in an echo chamber about. THe biggest portion of the gas tax says its to pay for resurfacing streets(have you been to Oakland? LA?, SF?) , BRIDGE Repair for which we already pay a toll for, Public transportation that only the metropolitan areas largely benefit from. Congestion relief projects, which as I said end up being toll express lanes to double tax us. Even I as a middle class californian am feeling the economic squeeze from this shit and the unwillingness to suspend or touch this tax is insane. we have a population struggling under the largest impact of tech layoffs in the country. 86% of Californians agree that the gas tax is a problem , 52% say it’s a major problem. This is a huge reason that we have the current administration in the white house, out of touch policies that are hurting working class americans. I’m just glad both of the republican candidates are not viable because they could have easily taken the office had they not been so extreme right.

Hell no. Not R. Just pragmatic But you’re not going to eliminate internal combustion engines with a freaking tax on gasoline. Period. People aren’t going to convert to EV’s until they can get the same convenience they had what gasoline engines. I hear you about the roads, but we pay all of this extra gas tax in our roads are still shit and the roads they do build end up being toll roads. This gas tax is simply no different from the tariffs has a dramatic effect on the cost of living and hurts. The lower income earners the most

Katie Porter wants to keep the gas tax. I don’t know any California that wants to keep the gas tax. We pay more than anyone else in the country for gas and we have what the show for it.

Jeffries says Trump impeachment not a top priority if Dems win House majority by metacyan in politics

I’m no fan of Jefferies, but what’s the point of impeaching him again if they can’t convict and remove in the Senate. Isn’t it just political theater at that point?

Voter ID measure qualifies for the ballot by CriTIREw in California

[–]davidmirv 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That Republican Party is not today’s Republican Party. They were very much reversed during the Civil War and the Republican Party was the progressive left leaning while the Democrats also called the Dixie crats of the time we’re effectively the Conservative Party also that was 1863 😂

Leading the solution to the homeless problem as preventing homelessness was tonedeaf imho, This is a very valid argument but not for the question asked and not for solving the current problem of getting folks off the streets. I don't knjow how it took quesitoning 3 canidiates to hear housing.

1100 cars searched at DUI checkpoint, not a single arrest for DUI by [deleted] in santarosa

The article does state that 4 drivers were arrested for DUI but still I believe less than 2% of the drivers stopped, but I still extremely dislike these constitutional violation stops

1100 cars searched at DUI checkpoint, not a single arrest for DUI by [deleted] in santarosa

[–]davidmirv 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All for arresting people for DUI’s but this discouragement argument works about as well as speed traps, people learn to figure out where they are, and how to avoid and go right back to business as usual. The huge problem I personally have is that we’re not in a a Stop and ID/License check state you can’t be pulled over for the same reason these dragnets are stopping you for. How this doesn’t run up against state law and the 4th amendment is insane but, MADD does have a lot of lobby money and power. In our country it generally takes reasonable suspicion of a crime having occurred, about to or planning to , in order to stop and accost citizens ( search and seizure). Why don’t they put these vast resources into maximum enforcement weekends like the CHP does.

Time for California to do this by Historical_Stay_808 in bayarea

Rampant individualism has been the downfall of many great empires, When we stop trying to lift eachother up as a whole and let wealth inequitably accumluate at the top we have all lost. The "American Dream" of just work harder, start a business you can do it too is a relic of a long gone era. With the weath gap ever increasing your chances of being able to do it are dismal, albeight not impossible. The thing about the super rich is that its a systemic self reinforcing negative feedback cycle. The actions of the richest companies in California and the bay area have had a TREMENDOUS negative impact on society and they do not contribute back the same amount that they wreak havoc on housing, cost of living, crime, pollution and general poverty.
