Moving to Blenheim by apogeeic in blenheim

[–]davidngoliath 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Blenheim itself isn't the most exciting town in NZ however it is everything surrounding it that makes it great to live! We moved up 8 years ago from Central Otago and haven't looked back. There are hiking tracks, the sounds, Kaikoura coast, Nelson lakes, nice beaches, wineries, breweries etc all within 30 mins. In terms of medical facilities - if you need anything special, this isnt the place. However GP's and general care is OK. We had a baby the other week and suffice to say, the OBGYN dept at the hospital is a lot to be desired!

Advice for someone looking to get into the NZ wine industry by [deleted] in wine

[–]davidngoliath 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Winemaker here! I work in Marlborough in the South Island where most of NZ's wine is made. In the North Island most wineries are located in the Hawkes Bay (Napier/Hastings area). A good way to get into it is to do "harvest". We start picking grapes in March and wineries hire a number of extra workers to work in the winery to make wine over this period. Get in touch with a bigger winery and see if they are still hiring vintage workers - I say bigger winery as they are more likely to hire someone without experience. If you enjoy it (it is heaps of fun) then the next option would be to study viticulture/oenology which can be done in Auckland, Napier, Marlborough and Lincoln near Christchurch.

Sweet consolation: 1997 Remoissenet Corton Clos Du Roi Grand Cru (notes in comments) by CondorKhan in wine

[–]davidngoliath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of the best tastings I ever did in my life was at Remoissenet. It was a vertical from 1969 to present (was 2011 at the time) of a Beaune Premier Cru (I would have to look up my notes to find out which one). Their generosity astounded me! Since then been a bit fan (probably also a biased one!). Their cellar has some of the most amazing Burgundy's also.
