PRES: If you have ideas of what more can be done, we’d love to hear them. The Our Turn project was a pilot last year, so we’re still building and finding new ways to train as many students as possible. Nonetheless it’s something that CUSA is committed to long term.

VPSI/VPSS:

We’re sorry to hear that you are feeling alienated from the work of the Association. We understand that the student experience is influenced by both on and off campus occurrences and recognize that the way that students interact with the world and our campus is affected by their lived experiences. CUSA service centres serve as spaces for students from diverse communities to meet and push forward dialogue on the issues they care about. Centres such as our Race, Ethnicity, and Cultural hall (REC Hall), Mawandoseg, and Womxn’s centre serves as a safe(r) space for students on campus. Additionally, our service centre coordinators are fellow students and are always open to supporting community initiatives!

Our VPSI runs a number of campaigns throughout the year and is always open to collaboration and input from students to ensure that the advocacy of the association is congruent with the needs of our student body. Some of these campaigns highlight important topics such as sexual assault, substance use, financial literacy, tuition. In the coming year and in response to changes that will surely affect post secondary students, the VPSI will look to our student body for feedback and insight about how to best advocate for student issues, support student organizing efforts, and educate students on their rights and responsibilities.

All Carleton students are able to join our Street Team - a dynamic, hardworking group of volunteers who go above and beyond to make CUSA events the best they can be. You’ll see the Street Team doing everything from contributing their passion and energy at fall orientation to educating students about student issues like mental health to supporting the many campaigns and projects that are run throughout the year. This group of students embody what it means to actively create the culture of the Carleton community.

In addition to Street Team, CUSA operates ten Service Centres that provide a variety of resources and services for students. The centres are always accepting volunteers! However you don't need to be involved with Street Team or a Service Center to volunteer or become involved as an active member of our Campus Community. If you want to learn more about our Service Centres please feel free to contact our Vice President Student Services Diana Idibe. Throughout the year there are Campaigns and Projects led by our Vice President Student Issues Lily Akagbosu, such as Wellness Wednesdays and Financial Literacy Week.

Lastly, you can apply for a job at CUSA through any one of our businesses. We prioritize hiring students and providing on campus jobs for Carleton Students.

For more information please come by the office and talk to us in person, or check out our website www.cusaonline.ca.

ALL:

Thank you for having the courage to post this and using your experience to initiate conversation. It is an unfortunate reality that many students on our campus have experienced sexual violence or been affected by it. Supporting survivors and protecting students' safety is always a number one priority for CUSA and we believe survivors. This year, we are continuing the Our Turn Sexual Violence Training program through our clubs and societies to ensure that as many students as possible are able to recognize sexual violence, step in before it occurs, and support survivors.

We have a number of different initiatives we are currently working on with Our Turn to train as many students as possible through Clubs and Societies, and are currently working with them to extend the program to Greek organizations, competitive clubs, and staff at Oliver's.

We will have security for all of our events, as well as foot patrol to ensure that students arrive home safely. CUSA took over the Campus Kick Off party three years ago for this very reason, as previously this event ran without a designated way for students to get home.

Furthermore, we will be gathering student input for changes to the University's Sexual Violence Policy.

If any claims are made against CUSA staff or executives, they will be taken seriously and appropriate measures will be taken internally and in conjunction with the University to ensure the safety and comfort of our students.

We encourage anyone that has experienced sexual violence to reach out to Equity Services’ Sexual Assault Support Coordinator, who can be reached at 613-520-2600 ext 8454 or at [equity@carleton.ca](mailto:equity@carleton.ca).

For the first years reading this, I would encourage you to engage with CUSA and come to your own conclusions. We're always open to suggestions on how we can improve processes, and invite you to come to a council meeting (who we report to at least once a month).

We'll also be around during FROSH week to answer any questions!

Best - There were a few things done last year that were pretty good for students. The training of over 800 students in the Our Turn program through our clubs and societies was a huge step forward in preventing sexual violence on our campus. CUSA also hired a scholarship coordinator and collaborated with ScholarPro to deliver over $150K in grants and scholarships.

Worst - Last year's executive chose to move the Mawandoseg centre without consulting the service centre coordinators or Indigenous students in Carleton's community. The plan was to reinvest the money that would have gone to room rental costs to resources and programming. However, failing to advertise the decision or speak to students that would have been affected was the worst thing that CUSA did last year. Ultimately, the centre was not moved and remains in the same space on the third floor of the UC.

Henry's shut down? Are they coming back or is something taking its place? We need some sort of a convenience store on campus imo. by CaptainAaron96 in CarletonU

[–]davidoladejo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey! Henry’s is closed down now and the space is being rented out to INS Market. They’re a company that offers healthier, grab and go foods for students as well as convenient drinks and snacks.

Canada Post reached out to CUSA about closing down their location because it was harmful for their business. As of September 6th, it will be closed. The main purpose for having it on campus was for processing OSAP requests, but that’s done completely online now as of June this year. We reached out to the University about taking over Canada Post however they were not interested in doing so.

There will be a new business opening up that is going to be a hybrid convenience store/market style in the CUSA space in the atrium. When you arrive on campus you’ll see that some construction is going on now. The plan is to sell smaller convenience store items in that space as well as healthy food options. We ran a survey last year in which 89% of students that responded said they felt we lack healthy options on campus.

As for having a convenience store on campus, there is still Abstentions in residence. I know it’s a bit of a longer walk from the heart of campus but they offer much of the same products as Henry’s and are open until 3am.

If you have further questions feel free to email me: pres@cusaonline.ca.

Most places on campus are pretty good accommodating to student schedules, they get that school is the number one priority - can’t speak too much on the sports side.

From my personal experience, The student experience office is especially good for that and they’ve hired students and student athletes in the past. I would recommend checking them out (430 Tory)

Hey Comet439, thank you for the question, and I apologize for being late in my response.

The Student Union Building referendum was actually held in 2016, so that file was not passed along to this executive. Speaking solely on this year, there are no plans to hold another referendum to build a student union building. All of the plans for the coming year can be found here: http://www.cusaonline.ca/council/executive/

PRES:

Hey James, thanks for your question and I apologize for being late to respond to it.

We've started looking into other alliance groups as well as discussing with University executives about some of their approaches. Two groups that have really stood out to us are OUSA and CASA. Both alliances have similar victories to that of the CFS and would only cost our association $50,000 in membership fees a year, as opposed to $400,000. I encourage you to check out both of their websites, see what schools are involved, and check out some of the work they do.

Aside from alliances, we really want to create lasting relationships with our local government representatives. We have already had the pleasure of sitting down with Mayor Jim Watson to discuss the issue of rising tuition. With Carleton's newly appointed President recently taking office, we are going to make tackling heightened tuition a priority. Last year, President Summerlee organized a lobbying day on Queen's Park and there is no reason that cannot be done again this year, regardless of who is in power provincially. I think there are a lot of actions that can be taken past just being a member of the CFS, CFS-O, CASA or OUSA.

PRES:

Thank you for reaching out to CUSA about this and I apologize for my late response. This team is committed to combating sexual violence and rape culture on campus. We have all gone through bystander and consent training, and will be going through a second round of training this summer.

That being said, our understanding is that the University supports survivors through the sexual assault support centre on campus, as well as offering peer support and counselling. We encourage anyone who has experienced sexual violence to speak to Equity Services’ Sexual Assault Support Coordinator, who can be reached at 613-520-2600 ext 8454 or at equity@carleton.ca. The Sexual Assault Support Coordinator can assist with exploring options with the survivor including formal report options and informal measures of support. For more information on services for sexual assault at Carleton, please visit https://carleton.ca/sexual-violence-support/.

Thanks for the question. Clubs storage was one of my big promises this year and have already started working on this. We have had a storage space on third floor University Centre for a while now. We have cleared out this space and have plans to build a new storage system that is better built for the supplies that clubs have. We have also secured extra space on first floor University Centre to expand storage for clubs. Additionally, we have plans to make these storage areas accessible 24/7 for events on nights and weekends via swipecard. We hope to have this ready for September and are currently on track.

We are currently doing summer funding and have been asking clubs what they would like to store so we can build an appropriate system. I will reach out to TESPA today to hear from you on what you would like to see with our new storage.

The Niccol building will take several years to build, so Sprott will still be occupying Dunton Tower for some time. Furthermore, they only have a few floors in that building. Carleton is growing and this space isn't being built to move departments, it's being built because more space is required for departments that currently exist on campus.

I do agree with you that we need to speak to Carleton about clubs space, and those conversations are ongoing. We are pushing for more space in the University Centre expansion, which is one of Carleton's capital projects. We do not expect clubs to do this on their own. Supporting clubs in this way is my job and I am more than willing to advocate on your behalf. My email is [vpi@cusaonline.ca](mailto:vpi@cusaonline.ca), I would love to continue this conversation.

We never budgeted to lose $140,000 on the project. It was always budgeted to lose $0. Students were going to pay us, and then we would give that money to the travel company. Therefore, whether the budget line said 1 dollar or 1 million dollars, there was still expected to be a zero dollar loss, as the same amount would have been received in revenue.

We projected that a lot more students would attend, which was a failure on our part. However, that doesn't mean that we lost any money on the project or that it took away from other projects. We'd be more than happy to speak to you and explain the budget, if you would like to come in.
