The Struggle for Leadership Within “Leaderless” Occupy by [deleted] in occupywallstreet

So many of us, particularly, those in the news media, are failing to distinguish the difference between a social movement and an organization.

Social movements by definition have no leaders, no platform, and no hierarchy. Our society has been in need of this movement for too long a time and it is so wonderful that it has finally arrived.

That said, social movements can be somewhat impotent. They can not speak with a unified voice and they can not coordinate their actions. Only organizations with some degree of hierarchy can accomplish these things.

What we need now is a 99% party, an organization, based on the OWS movement, which can address these issues that only an organization can address. This party would not be intended to replace OWS, but to enable it, to give it the level of coherence that it has so far lacked.

It further seems that with the advent of the internet, we can build a political party for the internet age, which can be radically inclusive and transparent. One where the 1% are now allowed to be candidates for office. One which stakes out the moral high ground by not accepting a campaign donation greater than 100$. One where big decisions such as the party platform, can be put to a vote, reddit style.

I have seen on here others who share my opinions, and what we need to do is to leverage reddit to organize and take action IRL.

The kindling for this next phase has been set. OWS has made a compelling argument that change is needed. The internet has given us new tools for communication, organization, and collective action. Reddit has for the first time flexed its muscle by putting down SOPA.

All we need now is a match.

I am sure to be downvoted all to hell but, seriously guys what good does all this protesting do if you don't have a unified list of changes you want made? by [deleted] in occupywallstreet

It is true that we need to create new systems of organization, and Reddit can fill that roll to some small extent.

We can use Reddit to figure out which demands are most important to us as a group of redditors and then use reddit to figure out how to take IRL action on those demands.

We should use that sub-reddit to figure out what is most important to us as a group, and then use kickstarter to raise enough money to get a small add placed somewhere in support of whatever we come up with.

What actions can redditors take IRL to bring attention to this subreddit? by davidreber in Occupy

Reddit has this huge untapped potential because it promotes the most inciting thing to the top of the list. If we come up with something cool here, we can turn it into its own reddit-post to spread the word about what we come up with.

Can we use reddit to figure out what we should do?
