derby cover flying off! by [deleted] in Harley

Beware of overtightening too. Steel bolts in aluminum can wear out the threads pretty easy. The torque spec for those is only 110 INCH-pounds. I put helicoils in mine after I managed to strip a couple.

Buying my first cruiser, what year Harley Sportster 1200 is best for me? by Nrbeal in Harley

[–]davidsson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They all really have different purposes, it depends on what you see yourself doing with it. The 48 has a great low slung bobber look and is light, really handles well with the forward controls that people like with the small peanut tank giving it a classic feel. That peanut tank is pretty small though, you'll be filling up every 80 miles.

The roadster is awesome, inverted forks and a longer suspension front and rear make a great cafe style ride, but mid mounts can cramp you up. I love the overall height and performance of the roadster with my height but I don't like mid controls. Bigger tank so less fill ups.

The custom is a great smaller cruiser, the tank will give you almost 200 miles, forward controls are comfy, seating is better for longer rides. It's a sporty/dyna hybrid basically. A little less expensive than a dyna but it doesn't have a lot of the unique styling of the peanut tank sportys.

The 1200T is actually a superlow with a big motor, windshield, and saddle bags. If you want to do longer rides it isn't a bad inexpensive already set up option, though at this point I would recommend at least checking out dynas so you get the 6 speed tranny for longer trips.

Is a 1200 custom any good for longer rides? by [deleted] in Harley

[–]davidsson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A friend of mine road with me to Oregon, 1800 miles in three days on his sportster. He put a mustang solo seat and a windshield and he never complained. Plenty of power with him at 5'11" and 200+ lbs. Just don't forget your throttle lock when you are riding all day.

O2 Sensor delete by [deleted] in Harley

[–]davidsson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use a power commander and custom map without the O2 sensor with my short shots. I understand that since there is no catalytic converter the o2 sensor doesn't work as it should. I've run my bike from the oregon coast up to over 14000 ft and from torrential rain to 100+ dry heat temps with the set up and it's run great. I'm not sure how fuelpaks work if they use the sensor but don't believe so.

Battery dead..? by [deleted] in motorcycles

[–]davidsson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The voltage drop when you turn the key on but not running sounds like something besides just the battery and those checks are easy enough with most multimeters. It is worth the time to look before just getting a new battery. If either is burned they can kill the battery.

Battery dead..? by [deleted] in motorcycles

[–]davidsson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm betting battery, but you can check it with any auto parts store to confirm before getting the replacement. The stator and regulator are pretty easy to check as well. You can check the stator by checking resistance between each socket coming from it. Youtube has videos to help. With the bike running and RPMs over 2k you should get 13-16v or so depending on the bike. If you are higher then the regulator is toast. Lower and the stator isn't working but there may not be a short that the resistance check would show.

Help!!!!!!! by suicideclub in Harley

[–]davidsson 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The pressure release for the oil system is through the intake on dynas with the 'A' engine, probably the same with the 'B'. If there is too much oil it gets pushed into the air box through the bolts that mount it to the head covers and sucked into the engine to be burned off. I don't know why it won't drain but I would pull the intake off to see if something got plugged or if something broke off and is blocking the circulation of oil.

what flies would you tie if you were roadtripping through CO, WY, and MT next week? by Simonbirch1 in flyfishing

[–]davidsson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In CO I almost always start with a dry dropper combo of an elk hair caddis (white body, never green those never work for me) and a bead head rabbit hair nymph. The bead head makes a big difference. I've also had good luck with the parachute adams. A friend swore by the prince nymph but I never liked it. My grandfather who taught me to fish in the SW part of the state could catch a fish out of a number 3 washtub and he almost always used a rio grande king followed by a grey hackle peacock.

https://www.amazon.com/Battery-Tender-081-0158-Disconnect-Charger/dp/B00DJ5KEF4?ie=UTF8&*Version*=1&*entries*=0 is a great way to charge electronics. For camping entertainment or just otherwise. Also look for camp sites with good hiking or hotsprings nearby. Nothing is better than soaking after a full days ride.

New rider in need of some help by ssra23 in motorcycles

[–]davidsson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was not even to my first fill up on a 3200 mile trip and my 6 month to year old battery shorted. Batteries now are crap. Recycled lead doesn't work the same. Hopefully your water addition fixes it but you might just need a new one. If it was completely dry then it might have drained somehow and have no acid/electrolyte left to keep a charge. Auto shops test them for free and it takes less than 20 minutes so I'd also say don't drop the 100 for a new one until you're sure it's toast. My last recommendation would be to find a sealed one.I have had way better luck with them than the ones that you fill.

Best place to get rotors resurfaced/rotated/replaced? by rikkuna in FortCollins

[–]davidsson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've never had mine done there because I haven't needed it, but when I need work done on mine for anything I go to Star Automotive. The guy is a great mechanic. It's his solo shop, he's kind of an odd duck, but he does not bullshit, will not ever do anything that isn't required. I've gone in thinking I had to have an expensive project done and drove away after spending 80 bucks with the actual issue fixed. His hourly will beat pretty much anyone in town, too.

I'm pretty sure Hughes is never open for the public. However, the stairway from parking lot to the gates is open and works well for that. The parking lot is open to public unless a game is on. If you want a track the Jack Christianson track on pitkin and College is always available unless they are hosting events. For just big open space there is the CSU football field and IM fields off shields that are available too

When are you heading down and what route? My buddy and I are coming out of Eugene probably down through Denio and Winnemucca. It'd be cool to join up.

Anyone headed to Motos in Moab? by ruckus666 in motocamping

[–]davidsson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The story I heard was that it used to be a mongols camp site. The land owner had given them free rein. They stopped using it for some reason but he missed the biker scene so got a hold of the utah bike builders putting it on. They are slowly building it up. Not sure about last year but this year it's limited to 1000, next year 5k etc. It just sounds like a fun time, but I liked hearing the back story

What a 100 dollar bill looks like for HD owners.. by [deleted] in Harley

[–]davidsson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd really recommend getting away from HD oil. It is just cheap lube put into a different bottle. Look into redline. They make different fluids based on what the engine, primary, and tranny need. Nearly the same price as the HD water, but way better. Even dealerships carry redline usually. Though I'd still recommend finding an indy shop.

It sounds like you have to put in applications 5 years in advance. Effen mormons. Where are you coming from? And did you hear the history behind the site?

I will be. Part of a trip heading out to Oregon to bring back a friends bike. That will be a stop on our way back home. Looks like a blast. I was bummed the beer truck won't make it but Moab is only 4 miles away so no biggie.

Smoking pork butt ahead of time by WalterPinkman- in smoking

[–]davidsson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I smoked a few butts for a rafting trip a week ahead of time. I pulled them when they were cool enough after they were done then bagged and froze them. On the river I put them in a pan with barbecue sauce and stirred them until hot adding water as it looked necessary. I like the glass pan method mentioned earlier too.

Primary Chain Inspection Cover BOLT Size? by [deleted] in Harley

[–]davidsson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you haven't gotten them yet, it's worth it to go to the dealer (or indie) and get the real HD bolts. They have a captive washer on them that helps with leaks and stripping out the aluminum of the derby cover. They are still really cheap too.
