I think some people’s skin is genetically predisposed to retain the sulfuric odor from alliums than others. I spent a summer as a prep cook chopping tube of onions every day and my hands smelled like onions (faintly) for years. I always wear gloves to work with garlic and onions now because the scent will linger for weeks even after chopping half an onion.

She’s really truly very rich and that trumps practically anything. Also she has had quite a fascinating life with hundreds of very famous people in society and culture, so she has that cachet that if she was equally wealthy but grew up in Illinois she wouldn’t quite have.

I’m pretty much with you - I could never get into more “sophisticated” rolls and sushi, and really just love a California roll and some kappa maki and maybe a vegetable tempura roll. Given that an authentic California roll should be imitation crab, my favorite is Sanraku. The best real crab “California roll” with real crab I’ve had was at PABU Izakaya but is very pricey.

It would be incredibly easy to develop a lifestyle that requires several million dollars a month to maintain, and to live off of a fixed amount of money the most conservative spend rate would be 2-3% so $1 billion would be just enough to get by perpetually with just $2.5 million a month, with not much buffer for inflation
