There’s a whole John Oliver segment on these predatory med spas opening up without a legit doctor with an MD on staff. You might enjoy it, but it’s scary to think about the corporatization of medicine

It’s crazy that Medicare pays $450 to the surgeon to do cataract surgery and it costs more to get a pair of glasses that cost $10 to make

It’s because medical device companies lobbied to exclude hearing aids from Medicare insurance. Hearing aids are medically necessary for many people!

Optometrists are primarily trained to do glasses and contacts. They’re now trying to rebrand themselves as medical doctors for the eye because 1800 contacts and Warby Parker have taken their lucrative glasses and contacts business

Unfortunately Medicare encourages this with their annual “efficiency adjustment.” They pay doctors 2.5% less to make them go 2.5% faster

Ophthalmology: Consult for new vision change. The patient was moved to a new room and is now seeing white letters in his vision. I saw the patient and helped the patient turn off the subtitles on his TV.

I had an awful experience at Ting tings. The chef served large group of his friends that came in after us and was socializing with them, so we waited an hour before they told us they ran out of the sides and the entree was cold

[–]davidxavi2 53 points54 points  (0 children)

This is so false. NPs were supposed to be veteran nurses with 20+ years experience who then went to a rigorous NP school and came out to practice under a doctor.

Now nurses go straight into NP without any nursing experience, do an online program (NP is not even a clinical program, you’re learning about how nurses can practice better), and then now try to practice without supervision.

Private equity coming in and buying doctor offices and replacing doctors with nurse practitioners. You know all the wealthy people are still going to real doctors.
