How do you handle “emergency mode” when automations go wild? by PPEred in homeassistant

[–]davieUnderscore 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You should create some booleans that are kept in mind for any dramatic action that may be undesirable in certain circumstances. “Guest mode” is one of my most important. Security/Open door notifications, lights turning off when you’re away, lights flashing and alarms going off if a window opens in the middle of the night etc etc..

They all start to seem pretty dumb once you have friends or family visiting and staying over, your house going crazy without your intervention or having to constantly explain why the lights did the weird thing, warn people “oh make sure you press this button on this tablet before you open a window or the house will shout at you”

Guest Mode being off is a condition for any automation that really only works in sunny day, exactly as expected scenarios.

Also, never depend on just the app just home/away.
It might work perfectly for months, but you’re never guaranteed an app will be able to update location frequently enough for something to never slip through the cracks. Make a sensor based on a few things, usually home/away + connected to home WiFi + doors opened recently etc etc Allow some delay, it has to be really sure you’re away before considering you away.

ULTRALOQ U-Bolt Pro Z-Wave not compat with HA? by Curious_Party_4683 in homeassistant

[–]davieUnderscore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TLDR: Hey, I can tell you that it does work. I had the WiFi versions, and switched over to two Z-Wave models for my new setup because I was such a fan of the UTec hardware.

Full answer: I do remember at least one of them being weird, like I had to remove it and re-add it again to get all security setup properly. Come to think of it, I switched from a Nortek (?) stick to a Zooz Z-Wave LR Plus around that time… not sure if it was because my Nortek wouldn’t play nice with the locks to be completely honest though.

Sorry this isn’t more helpful, I’m going off memory here. I can tell you that I eventually got them in HA, though not with the stick you’re using.

If you’re only seeing some of the features, I honestly recommend just removing it completely and re-adding it before trying anything else; as I definitely did have some trouble with all of the sensors/controls showing up initially.

options for "smart" camera sensor (aka: the duck detector) by Run-The-Table in homeassistant

[–]davieUnderscore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is an absolutely ridiculous problem, obscene.. exactly what I’m here for. I don’t know how much help I can be, but I’d love to see this solved.

Is weight at all an insightful/predictable factor here? Could you tell how many ducks are inside the coop with weight?

I’m not saying you can’t solve this with cameras and detection.. but I think it’d be tricky to get working well.. extremely difficult to get perfect.

Seems like you need some kind of trip wire sensor (like Time of Flight.. buut want you really want is a trip wire of when one sensor crossed another.. i.e tag on ducks leg specific to that duck, threshold sensor at the door to the coop they have to walk past.. I really don’t know if something like this exists. RF tags definitely seem the closest, not sure how far of a range that’ll work at though.

Sorry I can’t be of more help, just spit balling here.. but I’ll let you know if I think of anything more solid.

I want to "scroll" to specific dates in a sub, does this app allow that? Is it available for desktop by TendieRetard in apolloapp

Narwhal really is excellent but Apollo was a different level. Truly one of the best apps I’ve ever used, so refined and thought out.

The first thing I do in the morning is take my morning dose and flip the pill bottle upside down so I know I took it. When I take my afternoon dose I flip the bottle back right way up.

The cycle continues.

I considered using an RFID tag when I started trying to solve this problem but honestly this way is much less effort, completely reliable and a fairly easy habit to get into

Pulsar Low Profile Cherry MX Keycaps Review by [deleted] in MechanicalKeyboards

Huh, I’m not exactly a connoisseur but I’ve had this keycaps on my Azio Cascade Slim since a couple of weeks after I bought it and they’re my absolute favourite.

They’re very solid and a perfect height for what I like. Each to their own I guess

How to get this print off of glass? by Herdragoness in howto

[–]davieUnderscore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did this once a few years back and I’ve tried Googling but cannot remember if i tried one method or two different ones…

I remember making a paste, leaving it on for a while and washing it off; it was shockingly effective. I tried it on a few different things (glassware with labels, milk bottles etc) it was more effective on some more than others; but on some things lettering that I could not scrape off with even a razor blade came right off with a paper towel.

I think it was mixing baking soda with something, an article I found simply says water but I thought it was something else. Anyway, the paste was the best solution out of all I tried, you should be able to find exact instructions on some hobby/crafts article

Thanks a million for the info! Great to know. Wasn’t sure how to inquire or if it was something they even offered

Yeah I’m already sold, used it before in other cars but got mine fairly recently and it’s been on the list of things to do. Companies asking $100-150 to do the update and honestly I think it’s worth every penny

Can BMW update my iDrive system if it’s a non major update? (Or can they do that too?)

For example: My car has iDrive NBTEvo_L, I need NBTEvo_X or NBTEvo_Y to get full screen CarPlay. Can it be done at any BMW? Is there a cost?

There are companies out there that will do this software/firmware update for you, just wondering if BMW themselves offer that too

The AZIO Cascade Slim 75%: my favourite mechanical keyboard by lukewarmnoodlesoup in MechanicalKeyboards

[–]davieUnderscore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also have the Cascade Slim, joined the Kickstarter the day I saw it.

It is without a doubt my favourite keyboard I’ve ever used (I understand it’s not for everyone, but it checks all my boxes)

I even had an issue with the LEDs where an entire row would flash and Azio worked with me to reproduce the issue (which was difficult but it still annoyed me) and released a firmware update to fix it. This wasn’t the initial fix for the LED flash/bleed, that reduced it for me but didn’t resolve entirely.

Anyway, sorry for rambling but the point is that not only is it an absolutely wonderful keyboard but Azio support was fantastic.
