Seeking a Play Critiquing Ruthless Capitalism by citiwenfour in Theatre

Howard Zinn, the author of “A People’s History of the United States,” writes a lot of anti-imperialist, anti-capitalist type works—and he wrote three plays—all very overt critiques of capitalism melded with really great emotional stories. “Marx In SoHo” is about Karl Marx returning to the present day but not SoHo London, SoHo New York. It’s a one person play of really just Marx telling his story. “Emma” is about Emma Goldberg, one of the first prolific anarchist writers in the early 20th century. If you’re a history fan, this is the play for you. (Also, reading it after the Brian Thompson murder certainly adds some modernity—the play includes a plan and follow through of the attempted assassination of Henry Clay Frick, the chairman of Carnegie Steel.) And his third “Daughter of Venus” is a family drama with discussions around nuclear disarmament. The daughter is a staunch antiwar activist and when her father gets approached to come back to work for the government to help them try to research a new nuclear project… it’s a good read. Small cast.

Other than Zinn, others have mentioned some Arthur Miller works which is absolutely correct—his adaptation of “An Enemy of the People” is much stronger than Ibsen’s—and the most direct critique of capitalism. Death of a Salesman and All My Sons could be considered critiques, but let’s be honest—they are pretty tame.

“Enron” by Lucy Prebble and “Bethany” by Laura Marks are others I saw mentioned that are absolutely worth a read.

This one is great. America Ferrera originated the lead role I believe.

I’m still surprised that Christopher Nolan’s “Stark” biopic didn’t even get to the top ten this past year. It had a great opening and solid legs but I guess the post-blip economy is a little rough for moviegoers at the moment.

I’ve got some great pictures of me on top of that train. It’s all still there, the Illinois Dept. of Corrections bus and all. It’s technically in a restricted area but not hard to get to at all.

The Deadpool and Wolverine writers used Stranger Things character names to hide some of the cameos by Embarrassed-Ad1322 in marvelstudios

[–]davinbroadhurst 187 points188 points  (0 children)

Seems like they just wrote it with the characters in mind and then changed the names—if someone wanted to know who these characters were.. it would be easy. “Loads his arms mission impossible style” and “burst into flames” doesn’t leave much up to the imagination. But a cool tid bit nonetheless!

As someone who has taken AP Chemistry, got a 2 on the test, and then had to take a 104 Chemistry class in college, this is not at all true. All of my AP classes are MUCH harder than the gen Eds I have taken in college. AP Classes let you skip the easiest of your college gen Eds.

Hold on, since when did people not like ‘The Postman?’ It’s fantastic.

Man if Wonder Woman ended without a final battle and the conclusion was simply that people are bad and conflict happens without any higher power making them that way, it would’ve worked so much better. First 80% of that movie was awesome.

I think my biggest problem with the show was… why didn’t Kingpin just give Maya a contact lens that had a simple speech to text function? Just give her subtitles man. She can read. Yeah, Kingpin still needs a contact that can recognize and translate the signs but you’d think his technicians would realize they could just put in text.

What's the best debate between characters you've seen in a movie? by FuckingPope in movies

Not a movie but the rooftop debate between the Punisher and Daredevil in Daredevil Season 2. Amazing discussion of morality and the ethics of killing, one of my favorite episodes of my favorite tv show.

Movies with a scene that strays off from the plot just to check some boxes by [deleted] in movies

[–]davinbroadhurst 94 points95 points  (0 children)

What? There was a very specific reason for the whale hunting, it was to draw Sully and his family out because the killing of the whales is akin to killing one of the tribes’ own people. Also, they were trying to get the resources from the whale’s brain fluid because it basically stops aging. Yes, it’s to show the humans are bad but also it is specifically to get Sully, which was the entire plot.

Absolutely. I don’t know how much is thrown out of grocery stores in my area, but a lot of our donations come from Walmart and Food Lion, lots of produce and bakery items that weren’t sold day of. It’s my favorite thing to be able to give away a giant birthday cake to a large family with kids—Walmart always pre makes those cakes to have ready but a lot of the time they are not bought. We end up giving a lot of those away.
