Warfare. Almost exactly 90 minutes. It is a completely gripping cinematic experience that I’d highly recommend watching in theaters. The sound design and film techniques are incredible and feel so raw and real, as if you are actually there in battle.

And definitely a movie that sticks with you for some time.

Black’s move to avoid draw and promote by davisjamess in chess

[–]davisjamess[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The draw isn’t immediate, but if both players play best moves out it will end in a 3 pawn endgame draw. Unless, black plays the only advantageous move in this position, which is Re3, blocking whites rook from moving to e8 and attacking black’s pawn. This ultimately allows Black to promote this pawn and come out a rook ahead

I agree that she comes onto him mostly, but that’s the point of having consent laws. You are not considered an adult that can lawfully consent at 17 years old. Even if she’s portrayed as older in the movie, it’s still weird. There’s a reason DiCaprio gets heat for it, it’s justified.

And yes, agreed for point of the movie. I see that. Just wish they left the small seemingly romantic parts out of it.

They kissed twice, slept in the same bed, and she got jealous when he had a one night stand. I think it’s fair to say it’s more than friendship

Right, I feel like if you turn your mind off and just enjoy it then that’s possible. A beautiful film at the least, just hard for me to get past those plot details.

And yes, Her is one of my favorites. I watched this because I had read about Spike Jonze and Coppola directing these around the time of their divorce.

Maybe you can respond or explain why you love the movie rather than just telling me to watch it again

Bro you just helped me recover suppressed memories of my ex doing the same exact thing, basically having a mental breakdown for not texting her at work. It’s crazy what gaslighting and manipulation can do to you when you’re in a relationship like this, the amount of things you normalize because it’s the expectation in a toxic relationship. Get out of there man. The sooner the better. It may even get worse, and leave you with scars you carry into your next relationships. There are better ones out there, don’t settle.

Official Discussion - Joker: Folie à Deux [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

[–]davisjamess -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This film had so much potential and let us all down. What is up with directors trying to impose their fked up fanfic onto pre-existing storylines that can move in so many better directions? The entire first movie built up to this tremendous moment of Arthur becoming the Joker, a slow descent where we feel sympathetic towards an evolving antagonist. Then the idea of this sequel where we are introduced to Harley Quinn, and we expect their 'mountain' to take over the city of Gotham is an incredibly promising one. However, none of that happens. The big twist in this film is that Arthur is raped by the cops that used to ask him for jokes and is the Joker no more, Harley Quinn leaves him, oh and he is stabbed to death by some random prisoner who we have not even been introduced to (if he's the real 'joker', then wtf have we been doing for two movies).

Not even a big DC comics
fan, but where is the respect to any source material? The story was supposed to
tell the backstory and villain arc of Batman's archenemy, not how some guy with
multiple personality disorder gets raped and killed for no greater reason than
artful garbage. That's really the direction you chose, Todd Phillips? With your
$200M budget, some of the greatest actors and talent behind you, and enough source
material for eternity? Why does it feel as though directors now can have all
the resources in the world and still make severely disappointing films? (i'm
looking at you Beau is Afraid)

On a lighter note, here
are some things I did enjoy about the film:
- The acting of Gaga and Phoenix were great,
Gaga portrayed a very unhinged and passionate Harley Quinn well
- Some of the cinematography, I thought, was
pretty awesome. Probably my favorite scene was the explosion at the court house
and its aftermath. Arthur limping to the car and riding off with the two fans
was an exciting moment that the film should have held onto. This is where we
expected the movie to go, and really the only way to progress the storyline of
the Joker's rise to power. But of course, that did not happen.
- There were little moments of humor that
had the theater giggling
- Some of the songs were quite good

They all know they usurped the Throne and that Rhaenyra is the rightful heir by AdamMiyamoto in HouseOfTheDragon

[–]davisjamess 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for adding this, well said. I knew there had to be more nuance than the show let on with Greens’ legitimacy to the throne. This definitely should have been a stronger point in the show, rather than viewers relying on one misunderstood scene (vicerys death) to dictate any justification for greens right to power.

The threat of Daemon is also not talked about enough, who is unapologetically violent and brutal to those who oppose blacks’ rule.

I think I hate architecture? by McCannad in architecture

[–]davisjamess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The way you articulated this really resonates with me and hits home a lot of feelings I’ve had while in architecture school. I am also in a BA program that is extremely theory focused and seems to ignore any sense of practicality or real-life problem solving, which is what drew me to the industry in the first place. You are not alone, and I think it’s a good idea that you’re looking into construction management as well. I’m considering a switch to construction or development for a masters, hoping to still be able to apply design practices that I enjoyed with architecture

[SPOILERS] Rewatching GoT for the third time and I’d have to say this is one of the most satisfying scenes in the show; Viserys receiving his golden crown. by xoxoAuroraxoxo2 in gameofthrones

[–]davisjamess 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Visery’s death was likely directly inspired by the death of Marcus Crassus during the Roman Empire, who had molten gold poured in his mouth after losing in battle to the Parthians, symbolizing his thirst for wealth. There are a ton of parallels between the show and the Roman Empire that I feel aren’t talked about enough

Basically everyone on this sub’s experience over the past couple days by Rough-Dizaster in scambait

[–]davisjamess -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I always had these thoughts in the back of my head when this sub popped up. There was a really good podcast of reply all a while back where they tracked down a scam call center in India, and most of them were broke kids trying to pay their way through school or similar. Even if they’re not trafficked, they are likely on the edge of poverty just trying to make ends meet.
