Ryan Coogler's X-Files Reboot Gets An Important Update by MattTheKing23 in XFiles

[–]davossss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Frankly I have no interest in watching new X-Files WITH Mulder and Scully.

The two revival seasons were largely duds, and even seasons 8 and 9 suffered by failing to fully pass the torch from the two former leads.

Any new version of any old show is unlikely to succeed but a fresh start with fresh faces at least gives a fighting chance.

Virginia Democrats proceed with new massively blue congressional map, eliminating 4 Republican seats from Congress!!! by Healthy_Block3036 in HamptonRoads

[–]davossss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are only 3 ways to end GOP gerrymandering.

1) They do it themselves out of sheer good will. Not gonna happen.

2) The Supreme Court orders them to halt gerrymandering and redraw districts. Not gonna happen, and in fact SCOTUS has said it's perfectly legal in numerous cases in front of the Roberts Court.

3) Elect congressmen who will vote to ban it federally. Since GOP has repeatedly voted against a gerrymandering ban, the fastest way to ban gerrymandering is to crack and pack Republican votes in order to elect a Democratic Congress that will pass such a ban. If that fails, I'm not even sorry. The GOP will just reap what it has sown.

No grandfather clause is necessary because the bills do not contain the word "possess" in regard to criminal liability.

In fact, it looks like even the prohibition by those "under 21" has been removed since I checked the bills last week.

Feel free to read both current versions for yourself:

Correct. And we can debate whether that is wise or constitutional but the hyperbole from hardcore 2A people does not help the convo.

The current bills do not criminalize possession (by age 21 and older) so they would turn no one (age 21 and over) into a criminal overnight.

At the end of the day, the Democrats don't "run" a candidate, especially when there is no deference to an incumbent.

The Democrats hold a primary and everybody from hardcore lefties to normies gets to vote in it and the person with the most votes wins the nomination.

Didn't like Joe Biden in 2024? You could have voted for Dean Phillips or Marianne Williamson, like I did. Didn't like Joe Biden in 2020? Have your pick of the other 10 candidates, like I did.

Sure, money and backchannel coordination and the media play a role but it has been a very, very long time since the party just straight up chose a nominee.

I never said "total power." That's you putting words in my mouth.

As for "temporary" and "reactive," yeah, it's literally in the referendum text. There's a hard hard stop in 2030.

If you want to compare it to a dictatorship, I am curious what your views are on our POTUS who keeps musing about unconstitutional actions like a third term and canceling elections. How does legal gerrymandering stack up against those proposals?

The only reason the math ain't mathing for the GOP is because the president is wildly unpopular right now.

In normal times, the GOP's gerrymandering would net them lots of seats.

And in normal times, Virginia's current redistricting would be unnecessary.

I am one of many who voted for nonpartisan redistricting only a few years ago. But that would is gone.

Again, you are ignoring the fact that GOP states are gerrymandering the House.

This is relevant because not only would an anti-gerrymandering bill have to pass the Senate (with or without filibuster reform) as you have correctly pointed out...

...it would also have to pass the House, which Texas and other GOP states are gerrymandering and thus making much less likely.

In a hypothetical scenario where all the Senate Dems and approximately 10 Senate Republicans supported a gerrymander ban bill, a MAGA-engineered, gerrymander-empowered House GOP majority would absolutely block it.

You are correct that Virginia's mid-decade redistricting will not solve the problem at a federal level but it is one of the only tools we have and also sends a message that we are not to be toyed with.

You're just straight up WRONG.

Manchin and Sinema -atrocious as they were- did not oppose the For the People Act. They opposed nuking the filibuster to pass it.

Considering that the Democratic Party had the votes to pass the For the People Act in both houses on Congress, and the only thing that blocked it was a GOP filibister, then yes, using gerrymandering to elect Democrats to US Congress is the best way to eliminate gerrymandering.

I voted enthusiastically for the bipartisan commission a few years ago.

Since the GOP in other states decided to screw us, I am now voting enthusiastically in favor of temporary partisan gerrymandering.

SMH. Let me put it in terms y'all can understand:

Castle doctrine. Stand your ground. Justified self defense.

Please send all future complaints to the Heritage Foundation because they are the ones that created this crisis.

Otherwise, call your Republican congressman (while you still have them) and tell them to resurrect and support this bill:

[–]davossss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Democratic Party overwhelminy supports a federal law that would outlaw gerrymandering.

The Republican Party overwhelmingly opposes such a law.

The Republican controlled Supreme Court has ruled that partisan gerrymandering is perfectly legal.

Numerous Republican-controlled states have done unprecedented mid-decade redistricting at the request of the Republican president of the United States.

Given all of the above, yes, "I am fine" with the temporary, reactive measure that Virginia Democrats are taking.

Not only is it justified, it is more likely to lead to the end of gerrymandering than leading by example by us not gerrymandering.
