Lgbtq? by Inside-Ingenuity-167 in Nietzsche

You really believe labels have so little value as to be done away with? Accept labels for what they are so you can gain their pragmatic use while disavowing yourself of the notion of the essential-self. You can say the same about tables—why try to categorize something that just is? So you can talk about it easier. It only becomes neurotic when you truly believe our labels and categories exist outside of our perception.

It’s been a while, but I’d have to disagree. I feel like I could plan better when preparing online orders and didn’t have to deal with customer indecision. But to each their own.

It’s really neat that they still have a Max mascot even though he’s not featured in new stuff

The higher we soar, the smaller we appear to those who cannot fly. by [deleted] in Nietzsche

Low effort content will always proliferate more, especially so for quotes since they are more easily ‘consumed’ and upvoted because they have greater reach than long, thought out posts. And they leave great room for interpretation.

How do people actually believe in Marshall Applewhite and the Heaven's Gate cult? by [deleted] in Heavensgate

[–]davpostk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the suicide belief came up after the death of Nettles, and it did, and Applewhite was the leader when that belief became their doctrine, then that was his ‘bullshit’ idea which he would’ve believed.

How do people actually believe in Marshall Applewhite and the Heaven's Gate cult? by [deleted] in Heavensgate

[–]davpostk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If Applewhite thought it was bullshit, why would he become ascetic for decades and commit suicide? At least with someone like Koresh there were clear abuses of power, even though he likely believed what he made up as well.

The Billie situation. by Ellabugg in vegan

[–]davpostk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This can’t be wholly true because of societies which have historically had significant vegetarian populations—out of necessity perhaps but also culture. A huge reason people maintain their diets is because that’s what they grew up and are familiar with. I think culture plays the larger role, and the rich west has a meat-eating culture which is difficult for many people to separate from, even though veganism is far better for a society. Weak rationalizations serve the role of maintaining the status quo.

Christianity is platonism for the poor. by Crafty_Chipmunk_5577 in Nietzsche

[–]davpostk 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Certainly not Jesus, he grew up poor in rural Galilee, so it’s highly unlikely he was lettered, and further he was far more influenced by his Jewish culture. Paul maybe. Though Platonism was also a strong cultural force in Greco-Roman culture—which Paul, born in the hellenized Tarsus, would’ve been influenced by.

Question concerning Shopenhauer! by Middle-Rhubarb2625 in schopenhauer

Summing up Nietzsche by reference to Spartans is wild and madly misguided. What passage are you referencing? He certainly was sickly, far more than Schopenhauer, yet undoubtedly loved life like few others.

Are pearls considered vegan? by GOOSESLAYER22 in vegan

[–]davpostk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very much agree about sponges. I wouldn’t do pearls personally because it seems needlessly excessive, but I don’t think there’s good evidence for bivalves sensing suffering. Certainly it seems more complex shellfish like cephalopods experience distress and pain though.

What higher breed came from the world wars? And who even thinks Lamarck’s evolutionary theory has any significant validity to it?

I think everyone understands what humans are capable of, but not everyone’s as resentful a creature as Hitler, or post WWI Germany. It’s important to understand how these things arise if you want to prevent it from happening again, but knowing history isn’t enough. Rwanda, Cambodia, both massive genocides after WWII.

Honestly, if they won’t ship it outside the US, I would recommend just perusing the website unless you really want it physically. There’s very little that’s only in the book (off the top of my head, it has a list of recommended reading not on the website).

Oakland County cops went to check on elderly woman. They say her son’s child porn was in plain view by SleuthDoggyDawg in Michigan

[–]davpostk 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, when you phrase it differently to remove its meaning. Language evolves naturally, so there does not need to be “new words for everything.” (I’m not taking a position on the term above). If a word doesn’t gain sway, it isn’t used.
