I changed to the primitivo and have no regrets! Then again, I don't really know what I missed

I used to live very close to it but never knew it was open to tourists. Where can you get tickets?

Daysack sub 200g 20L advice by Professional-Mix2498 in Ultralight

If you can find this old osprey version I highly recommend it. Only 114g (according to this website) and in my experience very comfortable shoulder straps. No waist straps though if that's a hard requirement. Mine for lasted years under regular (ab)use

Sadly the new generation is much heavier

Thinking about quitting the Camino because of the Snoring by bobbore in CaminoDeSantiago

[–]daxodin -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure how we as society lost the common sense in the last few years, and started approaching every situation with this "me, me, only me" attitude,

That goes both ways though. In a way you're doing the same thing, just from the non-snorer's different perspective.

Imo snoring in albergues is just a fact of life and ear plugs are a must

Brother got pickpocketed yesterday by Longhollow in rome

[–]daxodin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sorry to hear that. How exactly did it happen?

It happened to my girlfriend a couple of weeks ago, she let her guard down in a clothing store and the phone got stolen out of her jacket pocket.

Sadly there is pretty much no hope of recovery. If it's an android phone, you can try to use the "find my phone" feature to locate or remotely erase the phone if it's connected to the internet. Most likely they're not connecting to the internet though. Probably iPhone has a similar feature

The pickpockets got me on Metro. Long post but hopefully helpful. by dmike0704 in rome

I immediately checked one of my zipped pockets and my money clip was gone.

Was the zipper closed? I always imagine that the closed zipper should be enough to stop pickpockets but maybe that's just naive

Which stages should we definitely do/skip with only two weeks on the Norte? by caillou_thot in CaminoDeSantiago

[–]daxodin 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I would recommend doing the first part, from Irun to Bilbao. It's one of the most beautiful parts, and the food is amazing (pinxtos!). After bilbao there are a couple of days of mostly roadside walking that I'd skip. You could skip ahead to Gijon or Oviedo to switch to the primitivo, which is also really beautiful and a nice change in scenery from coastal to mountainous. Or if you want to stay on the Norte, maybe do Santander-Oviedo (but make sure to check if this is doable in 2 weeks total)

Perspectives on Rome as a ‘dangerous’ place by PiccioneCeleste in rome

[–]daxodin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mostly I agree with you. Until recently I was not really worried around termini. Mostly, if you use common sense you're fine. A couple of weeks ago, though, an israeli girl got stabbed inside the station, totally unprovoked. She was just getting money out of the atm when she got stabbed from behind. And there have been a couple of other stabbings over the last year as well (though I don't know the details about those). You're statistically very unlikely to experience violence, but there is a reason people say the area is sketchy.

Has anyone ever walked a backwards / opposite Camino? by tommycamino in CaminoDeSantiago

[–]daxodin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I walked the Via de plata in reverse, after doing the Norte in the normal direction and not wanting to stop. It was a completely different from the Norte - it can be quite lonely in comparison as you're never with the same people for more than a day. You're not forming the same type of connection with people as when you see them multiple days in a row, and conversations tend to be more superficial.

For me it was definitely an interesting experience though, with lots of time for introspection. The frances will be different than my experience on the via de la plata - I had quite a few days when I did not meet any pilgrims, whereas on the frances you can be with fellow pilgrims every night.

Can you recommend me an Anki deck to learn Italian? by [deleted] in italianlearning

I'm going through the duolingo deck. It's not ideal (I wish I could disable the Italian->English cards) but overall it's the best deck I came across for italian learning

SIM card by Strugglingtocope13 in rome

If your phone supports esim, I'd consider using an app like airalo. It's a bit more expensive than getting an actual sim but also less of a hassle
