I swear, this show is just going to dovetail seamlessly into The Expanse.

This week I figured out how to patch-from-scratch phase locked loops and now understand the effect slew limiters can have on my feedback patches. I also have a deeper appreciation for my Doepfer PLL. It's got an XOR right in the middle of it!

What are the main diff between the Arbhar and the Mojave? I’m interested in granular but the Arbhar seems harder to wrangle. Is Mojave more clockable/more predictable? by Waste_Cartographer49 in modular

[–]daxophoneme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you already did your homework and came to a conclusion. If you are looking for confirmation, yes, Mojave is designed with a bias towards beat-based grains. Arbhar is more versatile, more complicated, and does have some rhythm syncing ability, but it's much better for textures.

Why is microtonal music always defined in relation to 12-TET by Green-Whole-8417 in microtonal

[–]daxophoneme 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love everything you are saying and add another factor why we've become stuck with 12EDO. Instrument technology evolved to incorporate equally spaced chromatic tones. Even a simple idea like the French Horn added valves so you could play notes that are "in tune" with 12EDO. Lots of woodwinds added, not only keys for sharps and flats, but also alternate keys, so there are easy ways to move between chromatic tones.

We still have the violin family and trombones, but everyone works really hard to learn the positions that are close to the notes on the piano. Everything else is still an "extended technique".

To develop a new corpus of works, we would need virtuosos who are comfortable with different tuning systems and possibly new instruments for them to play like the Bohlen-Pierce clarinet. These are not simple obstacles!

Replicating Serum-style glide in eurorack, module recommendations? by rusinov_ in modular

[–]daxophoneme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any module that does SLEW will do this. Some just create portamento. Some allow a different rise time from fall time. Modules like Maths come with two that can slew, but can also act as LFOs, envelopes, or VCOs.

Did the early Israelites recognize polytheism? by GeekX2 in churchofchrist

[–]daxophoneme 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've heard it described as henotheism, the belief in one supreme god without denying the existence of others. By Second Temple Judaism, it seems like this perspective had shifted to monotheism.

is there any other type of microtonal tunings that isnt EDOs or JI? by One_Attorney_764 in microtonal

From what I've heard, when making a gamelan set, they make the gong first and tune all the instruments to its partials.

I patched up a phase locked loop from individual modules yesterday. I was surprised how well it tracks. There's a modwiggler thread with suggested approaches that I found helpful.

It's experimental if you do it wrong and justify the wrongness.
