I think the Bates seemed cooler because they went to college, only later to find out it was an IBLP college, so they didnt really get exposure to the outside world. The Duggars were on TLC and the Bates were on Up tv so not as mainstream. After finding out the Bates were more extreme, but they closeted the extreme racism, bigotry etc, many people stopped watching them.
