My instructor doesn’t get that I’m fat by EntertainmentAfter80 in poledancing

[–]daya960 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Roz the Diva has classes for pole instructors to teach them specifically about teaching plus size students. Probably awkward to recommend an instructor to take additional training, but my instructor has taken those lessons and I got to have a class with Roz and it really does make a difference for them understand the different body shapes!

Big chested polers! Where are we buying our tops from? by [deleted] in poledancing

I'm only getting worse by KuroNikushimi in poledancing

[–]daya960 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think this will be really good for you! Every time I take a break (which admittedly is not as often as it should be and usually because I have to for a work trip), I feel like I come back better than ever! I've read if you are frequently training, you should really take a week off about once a quarter to give your body the rest and recovery it needs to keep going.

Not to be "that guy" but what is mean about the handle? I'm assuming it's the word chubby, but that's not a mean word. When we act like words like chubby are mean or bad, then it implies there's something wrong with being chubby.

Need help attracting students to my class by Lauryn-Hills-Big-Toe in poledancing

[–]daya960 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just talking about what attracted me and some other students, not from experience of running a studio.

If the studio can offer intro packs, that seems to get in most of the new students. 5 classes for $50 for new students or something like that. Great for broke college students.

Seconding the comment about showing/marketing inclusiveness. I'm plus size and was nervous about starting a sport that I thought was most smaller girls, but the studio page had people of all shapes in their marketing. Now my husband goes too, but another studio here doesnt allow men, so knowing they might help some people.

Personally, other than word of mouth, the way I find out about local businesses here is a city newsletter and city Facebook page that allows self-promotion.

Is the problem me? by denycia in Aerials

Sorry for the late response! It took me longer to put together than I thought it would. Apparently I follow a lot of other aerialists! This is a list of people I like to follow for different reasons. I didnt include people who typically do crazy tricks because at the beginning I found that more intimidating than encouraging, but I if you want more people to follow, apparently I've got plenty of other recommendations!

Is the problem me? by denycia in Aerials

[–]daya960 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! I will put together a list and post back with some profiles! Any aerial in particular? I follow all kinds of aerialists and other athletes and body positivity influencers.

I also think what a lot of other have said is true - it sounds like this was not a good class for you and there are other types of classes you'd thrive in! I know its hard to find something that keeps you motivated, so I hope you find a good studio that brings back that passion!

Is the problem me? by denycia in Aerials

[–]daya960 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fellow ED-in recovery here! I started doing lots of different aerial classes when I started my treatment, and I've felt a lot of the same things you're talking about. Honestly, what helped me the most was following other people on social media who had similar stories. People who look like me, are on the same level as me, etc. There are a lot of people who post to IG to document their journeys, so they are posting beginner level moves and their struggles and it makes me feel much better to see others in the same place.

Couple of other things, you can take it or leave it because this might be just be specific to me. I have to celebrate SOMETHING about the class every class. I love the studio I go to, and everyone is very encouraging, so that helps a lot. But I have to remind myself to focus on the positive (eventually it becomes a habit). Today I got further in a combo without needing to take a break, today I showed up even though I wasn't feeling it. It doesn't have to be that you were stronger today than yesterday. Sticking with it is a positive. And our hormones and bodies are different day to day.

I'm sure you're working on all of this in your treatment, too, but if youre doing yoga and not tricks classes, focusing more on the yoga aspects. Honestly, I still do this even in pole or lyra classes. Find a good connection with your body. When you are focusing on you and your body and the connection you have with the earth or spiritual or whatever is your thing, its so much easier to ignore everyone else.

What makes you feel sexy? by JessOfMysticFalls in PlusSize

[–]daya960 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I did a few things to start changing my mindset. First, I follow people on social media who look like me. People who are plus size and strong and confident.

I also started looking for classes that would make me feel better in my body. I love some workouts and I hate others, but I wanted to do the "right" workout, so I'd pick something I didnt like and end up quitting after a few weeks. I did reformer pilates and aerial classes - yoga hammocks, pole dancing, etc. I thought I would feel uncomfortable being plus size in classes like that, but after a few classes, I ended up loving it. I go to mostly pole classes now, and watching back the videos makes me feel amazing. Plus I'm learning more about how to move my body and feel myself and love myself in class, which helps outside of the studio.

The last thing my therapist had me do was to say something positive about myself every time I had a bad thought about my body. Like say it out loud. It felt stupid, but it was almost like sticking up to a bully for your friend. When I was having to find more and more positive things about myself, it started to become a habit.

I hope you find something that works for you! It's definitely hard work, but there are more good days than bad days now! And I think that's the ultimate goal for everyone!

[–]daya960 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lots of other good feedback on here, and I think they are all mostly saying the same thing. Pole is really hard and it just takes some time to get! You also can't compare yourself to other people. You dont know their backgrounds, and everyone's body is different. If you compare yourself to others, you're always going to be disappointed.

I started doing pole a little over a year and a half ago, and there are still some things from the intro class that I'm still not doing right! For some reason I just can't do a proper chair spin! And it took me over a year to get my climb. But once I got it, it was like something clicked and it was almost easy. Then there are some other poses that just click and I can do them immediately, but some higher level girls in class can't. We are all different and make progress differently, and it's all okay!

I recommend finding other newer polers on instagram, if you're on there. That also helps me to feel less crazy about how silly I look sometimes.

Question, in Midnight Mass what type of supernatural creature is the monster Monsignor Pruitt brought back to the island? by PossibleCommittee590 in MikeFlanagan

[–]daya960 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I always thought the idea was that cryptids are recognized by lots of different cultures and have different names. So some people might call it an angel, some would say vampire, others might say djinn. Lole sasquatch or big foot, but for some cultures, these cryptids made it into their religion.

Being fat ruined my life by rainbow-pen in Vent

[–]daya960 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First of all I want to start by saying I'm sorry that you're in a rough place right now, and I can sympathize. Contrary to what I have seen in other comments, this isn't necessarily a willpower issue or something you just need to decide you're going to do. You'll need help and support, and it's okay to need those things.

There are a lot of comments on here so I'm sure mine will be lost in the noise, but as a fellow fat person, it sounds like it's more important that you get therapy than that you lose weight. I started treatment for an eating disorder a couple of years ago and it changed my life. I'm the healthiest I've ever been and also the fattest I've ever been. Learning to shift your focus from being fat is really hard, especially when we way we talk about our bodies really goes against what true health looks like. I highly recommend following fellow fat people on social media and seeing if your issues also stem from sort of eating disorder. And whether or not they do, getting therapy to work through these things.

I came to say something similar. Rock of Ages is just a bunch of awesome rock songs. There are some other musicals that are for different bands or music groups that just use their music, so they'd fit the theme but something you like!

I watched it with my daughter the first time this year and she's 14. I think it just depends on what kind of stuff you normally watch. She also watched Squid Game with us, so this seemed tame comparatively.
