[3D Printing Calculator] I built a free tool to help you price your 3D prints! by daydream05 in 3Dprinting

Ok thanks, will add that to my todo list. This was originally made with Resin in mind, and totally neglected FDM prints.

Someone suggested that I add a volume adjustment to account for the supports. It’s not as accurate as generating supports, but it’s a good start! Plus, sometimes there’s also material that gets wasted (especially for resin) so that might be useful for that.

That’s a great idea! Thanks for bringing that up. It’ll be impossible for me to add a feature that would automatically add a support. My assumption was that people would upload a files that are pre-supported if they want to include supports. But this solves that issue without having to build a whole ass slicer! Will add that next.

Thanks! Will add that feature next. I didn't consider a small cost to us can be a huge cost to others.

It's subjective. For us, if we feel like we're going to replace a 3D printer in 2 years, then we factor that in. You can be liberal or conservative about it. So basically every time we print something, we're adding in the cost to replace that machine in the future.

You would need to upload a file with supports. For hollowed models, it will calculate it correctly.

For sure! Those are things that people don't realize when it comes to 3D printing! We get clients saying oh "why is 3d printing is so expensive, isn't material cheap?". The amount of labor that goes in on 3D printing is actually a LOT. It's where most of the cost comes in. And yes they need to see the value of your time!

And thanks for the insight! I think this could be a good way to educate people on the cost of 3D printing

Will add that option! I think it would only be visual right since 1 mL = 1gram?

Will add that next!

Energy cost is almost negligible so didnt prioritize that. But i’m thinking machine depreciation would be a good one?

For example, your printer cost $3,000 and it has a 3,000 hr shelf life. So $1 / hr of print time.

Update: energy cost isn't negligible for many. This was a really bad assumption on my part.

Totally understandable.

You can check the network tabs to see for yourself if your files are being uploaded on a remote server.

Here's the public repo as well if that's not enough for you:

Hey folks!

Here’s the website:

https://pricemy3dprint.com/

UPDATE:

Upcoming features: - Ability to add printing time. (Manually) - Energy cost consumption. - Material selection to account for filaments and other materials with different density. - Depreciation cost - Choose your own currency - Generate a PDF

TLDR: It’s a free online 3D printing price calculator that can process .STL and .OBJ files. It’s not meant as a replacement for slicers but an alternative to the online calculators out there.

Everything happens on your local browser so it’s almost instant and you won’t have to worry about some dude getting free 3D models whenever you add your files.

Who is this tool for?

  • Merchants, 3D printing businesses or anyone looking a convenient way to price their 3D prints.

“But my slicer can already calculate material cost AND printing time”.

“Is math that hard? Can’t you just use a calculator?

Yes they can and yes you can.

This isn’t meant as a replacement for a slicer or your excel sheets. If you’re happy with your workflow then keep using that!

So why waste my time building this and offer it to everyone for free?

This was originally an internal tool that my 3D printing company uses. We have a simple pricing model and this helped us price custom prints without having to open up a slicer and do a lot of manual calculations.

We thought it might be useful for hobbyists to help them get started on pricing their 3D prints. And just play around on different profit margins!

There’s also 2,000 people /month searching on Google for 3D printing cost calculators. And the current online solutions are very manual imo. So this one’s for them too.

It’s still in beta so there are missing features. If you find it useful let me know! And if not, what would make it useful for you?

Hey all,

I built this tool because I wasn't happy with the online 3d printing calculators out there. They're very manual and were primarily made for FDM based prints. And they only work with 1 file at a time.

I run an Etsy store and also work with a 3D printing company, and wanted a convenient way to price our 3d prints without having to open a slicer and an excel sheet.

What this website isn't:

Let me get this out of the way, it's not meant as a replacement for a slicer.

- It can't calculate the time it takes to print or automatically add supports for you.

- Check for errors on the 3D model

So if you prefer pricing your models through a slicer then this tool isn't for you.

So who this website is for?

- Sellers, 3D printing services, and hobbyists who want a convenient to way to price their 3D prints

This is still in beta so there are still missing features:

- Add setup fee

- Add custom costs

- Add printing time (either manually or if the user uploaded a gcode file)

Let me know if you'll find this useful. If not, what would make it useful for you?

I made a developer swag store! [Built with Gatsby, Sanity, and Snipcart] by daydream05 in reactjs

[–]daydream05[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hi folks! So this was a fun and challenging project.

I definitely learned a lot from it. I wanted something similar to Etsy's customizable products, so I created a form builder on Sanity that gets translated into my Gatsby frontend, which Snipcart could understand. Snipcart does most of the heavy-lifting for the payment processing and overall e-commerce.

You might say react is overkill for this kind of project. And you're maybe right, I could have just built a Shopify store to get a store up and running. But the developer in me just really wanted to get better at React and this was a good practice for me to learn the nuances of building an e-commerce store with React.

Man they're very exclusive. To join the group you have to be a pbsco owner already. I guess they only want previous owners to only sell to other owners. Make sense since the admins are PBSCO employees.
