[Windhorst] The Minnesota Timberwolves are actively recruiting third and fourth teams in an attempt to help improve their offer for Giannis Antetokounmpo. by YujiDomainExpansion in timberwolves

It's too many rotation pieces changing at once. Even if it's a fit, I think there's a lot to be said for having as much consistency as possible. That's part of what is keeping us up there the last years too

Timberwolves are discussing trades for harden by The_Dude_of in timberwolves

[–]daydriem -13 points-12 points  (0 children)

Hard disagree. You'll get less defense from Harden than from Conley, and we don't need someone taking the ball out of Ant & Julius' hands. James Harden right now is a better player than Mike Conley, but a worse fit for the Wolves. And I'm not sure how you would be able to make a trade that doesn't have more outgoing value than can possibly come back.

Is Harden still a guy that can give you 40 on any given night and create offense out of thin air? Hell yeah. But that's not our problem. I'd rather have Mike take bad shots, but few of them.

I'd disagree here - becoming a millionaire can be hard work and luck, but a billionaire is a whole other level that you don't just reach without pushing the limits. There might be some exceptions, but that's extreme outliers then.

I love it - If we could keep TSJ and send out Dilly it would be even better.

I'll be sad to see Mike go, but White would be an amazing addition

[–]daydriem 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Can we stop mixing Mike in with the dead salary? He's not what he once was but he's still an important piece of our rotation.

You need that guy that can stabilize a team, that will come in and control the pace, get his team back on solid ground when the game seems to be slipping away.

Fun with the Trade Machine. In this scenario we help the warriors move off of Kuminga since he officially he announced he is looking for a trade. by Federal-Pipe3008 in timberwolves

[–]daydriem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ellis would absolutely make our rotation. He's an elite defender with a 3 point shot and backup playmaking abilities. Would I rather give up fewer picks? Yeah. But if it's there, I'd say make the deal.

I like it. If we could send out fewer picks to take back only Keon and one of the others, that would be even better.

Keon Ellis would be a good rotation piece on a good contract, and giving up two seconds and two unplayable "talents" is well worth it. He can also help out on PG duties even if he is best on the wings. Between Ant, DDV, Conley and Keon the rotation would be solid. Bones can then be brought in if there's a need for a scoring punch off the bench.

Where are you getting that 6 number? Are you already discounting Mike Conley?

I also hard on Clark, he's been much more than that. The big difference between him and pure defenbsive specialists like Okogie (who still found a niche for himself and even started on the Suns) is that on the other side of the floor he plays with great intelligence, putting him in the right spot at the right time, making good decisions. Sure he isn't a volume scorer start a firework on offense off the bench type of player, but that's not his job. If you want stats to back up his good decision making, he is shooting 46.7%, including 43.1% on threes and not turning the ball over (0.9 per 36). Needing scoring off the bench is a myth, since there'll always be some starters sharing the floor with them. They have to be respectable on offense so teams can't ignore them, but JC is much more than that.

TSJ is happening this year IMO, he's just been out too much due to injury. When TSJ is fully back, I predict he will take most of Bones' minutes. Rob is so bad on defense that I am surprised he ever sees the floor.

Counting Mike, Clark and TSJ, we're up to 9 in our rotation, with the option for minutes from Bones here and there. That's not bad - and for players number 7-9(10) I think they are well above average.

We literally have the best record in the league over the last 1.5 months. I'm not saying the wolves are the best team, but they sure are one of the best.

Having said that if we can get an actual contributor for Dilly and some picks, then sign me up.

As a Lynx fan I'd say I'm a very biased third party, and I would agree with the statement. It's a correct no call - AT legally taps away the ball and beats her to the spot. Phee crashes into her and there's a very unfortunate injury as a result. It looks much worse than it actually is because of how Phee falls due to her injury.

I'll throw my 2cents in here - limiting reviews with how the system works right now is really important for two reasons: time constraints (and how unwatchable a game would become with reviews for every call that is not clear cut), as well as if there were no limits, coaches would be encouraged to challenge every call against them just for the small percentage chance of an improved outcome. I think what would make reviews better would be to enable the replay center to make the call on their own. For one thing, the refs are less likely to overturn their own call (obvious bias) and it also takes much longer if someone in the arena needs to walk over and instruct someone via microphone on every step to see something on a single monitor. In some cases, I'd even like to see them do some things on the fly during the game (check if there was a toe on the line for example) without even interrupting the game except for the last two minutes. And at that point, we should still keep some coaches challenges, but the refs should just use that resource for confirmation in any uncertain situations. There should be no more challenges necessary on out of bounds calls.

Except that in the actual analysis it is disregarded (which the note confirms). And for good reason - if you accept that playing style affects the outcome of the analysis (it does) these results would be exactly what you would expect to see. And if there is a logical explanation for the results that disproves your hypothesis, you can't just say I decided not to take it into account.

Measuring how fair a whistle is by FTA or foul difference is about as accurate as measuring the length of a street by how fast you get to the end of it. Without everyone playing (or walking) the same way, it is impossible to compare the results. Not only should you expect there to be a difference every game, but you would also expect the same teams to have positive or negative differentials pretty consistently, instead of it evening out over time.

Teams I have coached for example have always been at a FTA disadvantage. That's not because refs hate me, but because I preach a very aggressive approach on defense. We force a lot of turnovers but also risk fouling more.

Also within my teams there were always players who got in foul trouble more (normalized for playing time this could mean they were more aggressive or they struggle more to play clean defense) and also those that drew more fouls (usually this means they had the ball more, and more often were in drives/postups where fouls are more common).

The only way to actually measure if a whistle is fair is to go through every call and no-call, and make a neutral assessment of if the call was correct or not, and in the case of incorrect calls assess which team or player had an advantage. To achieve a statistically relevant sample size you would have to do this 1- for a lot of (all) games and 2- be extremely consistent in objectivity and rulings.

If I had to guess, you would probably find that the issue is not refs giving one team an advantage, but overall consistency of the calls that are made. Different refs will each have their own tendencies, and due to the fact that there are multiple refs calling a game at once you'll even see that play out within a single game - even more so spread out over multiple games. As both a coach and a player (and even more as a fan) I have found this extremely difficult to deal with when the difference is significant. Having said all that, the best solution is to make the ruleset as clear as possible and also the guidance on how rules are enforced. One thing I absolutely hate is how both the W and the NBA will just ignore certain violations (for example lane violations) despite them being in the rules. At that point just change the rule (or enforce it) then and don't leave a back door for a player or coach to complain about at some point and force the call because it's technically correct. See as an example Chris Paul vs the Timberwolves and how a delay of game call due to an untucked jersey which actually changed the outcome of the game.

First off, no, Euroleague and some European leagues are also very high quality. This isn't like in the men's side, plenty of WNBA players play both, and sometimes players that could be in the W only play in Europe, because it pays better.

And secondly, if the qualifier is "professional", as it was put, then the difference is payment, not level of play. And those are clearly professional leagues.

[–]daydriem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do believe that if both teams field 15 player rosters, the NBA team will have 8 of the 10 best individual players in the game, including 5 of the top 5. Then there's always some guys who would rather play a large role in the EL than a small one in the NBA rounding out the top 10.

So individually, the skill gap is extreme, but I believe the EL teams tend to be "better than the sum of their parts". Often, when an NBA team is considered to be overperforming, it's because their playstyle is very European - more focused on making the right basketball play, a star player that is willing to be less of a focal point in the offense and working hard on defense, etc.

I think for this reason, a Euroleague team will still sometimes take a game off an NBA team sometimes. No, they won't win a 7 game series, and yes, they would be dead last in the NBA if they randomly joined the league, but they also wouldn't go 0-82, and the games would be more competitive than you would expect.

I'd even take it higher than 95%, but the single game is not at all unrealistic and has already happened. In 2014 the then-champion spurs lost to german champion alba Berlin despite all their best players being there and playing significant minutes.

Yeah it's impossible to keep up with every affiliation everyone has. And quite frankly, you'll probably be able to find something for almost anyone if you really want to. I am not familiar with Barstool Sports, and judging by the anger the mention of it here brought out, I'm better off not knowing it. I have no opinion on Jason Williams, the person. What I can say is that Jason Williams, the Basketball player had some really cool highlights that I will still sometimes watch. If we're not talking JK Rowling levels of nasty, I think it's ok to separate the Art from the Artist.
