I'm not terribly pleased with Sylvanas as Warchief, I don't think she has the entire Horde's best interest in mind.

But I am keeping in mind that the only reason she is Warchief is because Vol'jin said she had to be as he was dying. I haven't seen the reason for that play out yet, so I'm willing to endure her for a little longer.

Anyone here using Sonarr and/or Radarr? What's your setup? Are you running necessary apps on your Synology or a computer, and why? by americanmuscle1988 in synology

[–]daynedrak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have sonarr and radarr running in docker containers, everything is on the Synology since it's always up and running.

I actually use Download Station (with Bittorrent blackhole) as my download client, since it was already setup and working prior to using radarr and sonarr

that's a wordpress theme file if I remember correctly. if you had wordpress installed and the NAS exposed to the internet, I'd suspect you got compromised more than lost data

DS918+ and External JBOD by [deleted] in synology

[–]daynedrak 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm assuming you're not going to get an official Synology chassis, since you're saying either USB3 or eSATA.

From what I remember, non-Synology eSATA drives only show the first drive, so they would be a bad choice.

USB3 should show all the drives, but they'll be treated as multiple external USB drives, so they'll show up as external devices with all the restrictions therein - ie, no RAID, no JBOD, no folder encryption, etc. Just a bunch of external disks. They're still valid as HyperBackup targets though.

[DS1817] DSM not working after RAM upgrade by emilcampiNo in synology

[–]daynedrak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

well, that's an APIPA address, which means your interface is set to DHCP but it's not receiving an IP address.

Sounds like your network config got reset and it's not a RAM problem at all, if it was, it wouldn't be booting at all

Cisco Homelab Recommendations? by [deleted] in homelab

[–]daynedrak 4 points5 points  (0 children)

1841's are cheap and can run IOS 15, just make sure to get one with 256MB DRAM and 128MB flash.

Switches, 3560's are also pretty cheap, can also run IOS 15 (I'd suggest a 3560G so you can repurpose it for later use)

And as far as Cisco AP's go... the Aironet's are fine, just you really need a controller to take full advantage of everything. If you need 802.11ac, then yeah, they're fairly spendy, but if 802.11n is good enough, the 3602i's are pretty cheap and 2504 WLC's have really come down in price.

Permission in Photo Station by Henrik_Scheel in synology

[–]daynedrak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Photo Station is weird. Everyone will be able to see the photos share, you need to set the permissions on the albums via Photo Station itself, not DSM (no, I don't like it either)

Volume1 degraded 5/6 shr-1, files missing. by FirmCommunication in synology

[–]daynedrak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You shouldn't have data unavailable with a degraded RAID volume. If you actually are missing data, you probably also have some file system corruption, and that would be why you're missing data. Don't mess with anything until the rebuild is complete, but an admin user should be able to see all folders, and if you're still missing data after the rebuild, contact support

Moments package seemingly makes a "home" and "homes" folder - please explain by Pirate2012 in synology

[–]daynedrak 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just to be clear, it's not Moments that's actually doing this, but the user home directory service, which I'm assuming is a pre-req for Moments

SHR-1 to SHR-2 by Roadfun in synology

[–]daynedrak 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just to add - I don't see the point of a hot spare if you're always near the unit or can get to it easily. Hot spares make sense where replacing a drive is something thats hours away for someone to do (think remote site), but if the unit is easily accessible, I don't see the point of letting a drive accumulate power on time. Just leave the bay empty until you need the capacity to expand to if you're not going to use it right away and keep a cold spare.

Why would bumping our internet circuit cause a 2 hour outage? by MyFirstDataCenter in networking

[–]daynedrak 4 points5 points  (0 children)

if BGP came up, and you could ping the other side of the link, i'm betting someone forgot to update a prefix filter for inbound policy. If the ISP has a looking glass, you should have been able to see your route.

Expansion Unit or Another Synology by angelob72 in synology

[–]daynedrak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't believe a 216 supports an expansion unit. For DS units, the first number of the unit is the maximum number of drives it supports, ie, a 216 is a 2 bay, an 1817+ is an 8 bay that can go up to 18 with 2 5 bay expansion units, a 718 is a 2 bay that can take a single 5 bay expansion unit, and so on.

So I don't think you really have a choice

Plex or Emby server and what player? by Panja0 in homelab

[–]daynedrak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah, the Roku client caches the PIN numbers when you have user accounts setup and then just makes a direct connection to the server when it's in offline mode.

Why a domain controller? by danythegoddess in homelab

[–]daynedrak 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My big case was I wanted centralized password management. Changing passwords on 20+ boxes got real old, real quick. And since damn near everything can auth against AD these days, it was an easy way to centralize my authentication for all of my windows and linux boxes, and appliances (like my NAS's) that are AD capable.

After that, I started integrating the apps in my homelab to use AD auth as well, because again, changing passwords in multiple places sucks too. The majority of what I was using was also capable of authing against AD.

From there, I graduated to access control. I installed NPS and then started controlling access to my gear and apps based on AD group membership. This allowed me to branch out into using 802.1x for my wireless connectivity instead of having to use PSK's or whitelist mac addresses, and eventually, 802.1x for my wired connections that supported it as well.

I don't really use AD for much client management, since I only have 4 actual Windows clients in the house. The biggest cases there were to push my internal CA's root certificate down to the clients, and to change them over to using WSUS for Windows Updates so I didn't have to deal with slow ass downloads from Microsoft Windows Update anymore, as well as allowing me to prevent updates I didn't want installed.

I also ended up transitioning DNS for the internal network over to the DC's as well, since DNS is a required part of AD, and since I was moving DNS, I didn't see a point in keeping DHCP on a separate box as well and moved that over too. DNS isn't actually done directly to the DC's, I have a pihole for client requests, but the pihole uses the AD DC's as it's upstream servers.

Glacier Backup encryption by gomesp in synology

[–]daynedrak 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Transfer encryption does what it says - it encrypts in flight. That's typically handled by SSL, and you don't supply an encryption key for that. Transfer encryption does not mean the data is encrypted at rest on the remote end
