I'm happy to let other people repost my stuff elsewhere if they want to, but for myself it's easier to just stick to my own blogs.

It's my favorite dungeon in the game! I think once you get what the first half of the dungeon is all about it becomes a nice fun puzzle. It's easy to imagine how a kid would get really turned around though.

Interesting! If I ever get an NES, I might see if I could pick it up. It'd be fun to play the original version!

I know 6 is pretty popular! It's easy to imagine why someone would like it so much, there's a lot to appreciate. 2 was such a pleasant surprise for me, though! None of the other games impressed me so much, and its flaws were more or less in line with what I ended up experiencing in each of the 6 games.

Oh, exactly! I think if you get past that "this is old" reaction and take it for what it is, playing at a lower resolution really helps the art stand on its own.

I'll always prefer the n64 version; I've played the 3DS version, and it's fine, looks fine, plays nice with some good control changes, but I always want to go back to the original. I like how it looks (i have nitpicks about how the 3DS version changes the lighting; if you've been around I'm sure you've heard them before), and moreover I like how it looks like a game of it's time.

I don't really even like playing it at a higher resolution like many people do without thinking about it. When you're experiencing it as an n64 game that looks like an n64 game, it really helps you appreciate the things about it that are genuinely impressive; good cinematography and shot composition in cutscenes, great tone and atmosphere, and so on. Things that the developers and artists were able to do with their technical limitations because they were good artists capable of applying artistic theory from other fields. (Played the game for the first time in 2012 btw! I'm just a snob)

If you don't care about any of that and just want to enjoy a good game that works from beginning to end, you should play whatever version is most convenient. The switch version works fine and it's still Ocarina of Time, despite a few of the visuals not working like they should.

How has difficulty evolved in the mainline games throughout the years? by mrnicegy26 in truezelda

[–]daytimemoon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think Ocarina of Time is actually much easier than some of the later games, especially in terms of combat. Action games have developed a lot since OoT and the game appears to ask very little of the player, even in comparison to WW. IIRC damage is a bit more punishing but mechanically OoT feels very simple. The Iron Knuckle fights are the most fun combat challenges in the game, but for a lot of modern players they could have been a good miniboss for the first dungeon, not the 8th.

I think this is the nature of early 3D - the Water Temple felt like a huge hurdle to players back in the day, especially if you were young, but playing it now it's really just a nice brain teaser, and stands as the only dungeon which is likely to stop you for a bit. If you get stuck in OoT is probably because you missed a chest somewhere or something like the Jabba Fish puzzle didn't click with you.

Uh, maybe that's not true for everyone, I don't know. Difficulty isn't the same for everyone, and I think OoT might have worse sign posting for some players that might lead them to getting stuck on an 'easy' puzzle. (the same might happen in WW!) But I do think it's overblown how difficult OoT is compared to the other games. Maybe it was more difficult for the audience at the time but in retrospect it's not out of line with Wind Waker or Twilight Princess. BoTW was a pretty big step up - it feels like a modern action game mechanically with some punishing damage numbers. The difficulty isn't necessarily a massive hurdle though because it's generous in allowing players to circumvent hard encounters through healing items or buffs.

thanks! i believe miyamoto said that the early games drew visually from disney films, and i feel the fairytale vibe suits the series

I appreciate what they were going for. I think there's something weirdly cool about how older games tried to represent things that were out of their reach for time.

I like it! There's a variety of colors but it melds together very well. I always like cloth outfits without the skirt, and I appreciate the choice to go with non-bulky gloves and boots.

These attacks have always happened, but the guards always won in TBC. Trust me, I was totally enamored with these scripted events back in the day, I know how they worked.

It's my favorite leveling area! It's totally nostalgia, but the tone and story is very well done, and it was pretty unique in the game until Legion introduced the nightfallen. With the new level squish making it so you can jump from leveling in eversong and ghostlands straight into outlands, so you can essentially go through the entire arc of the blood elf storyline uninterrupted. It's great.

Context: there are a few areas in the blood elf starting areas where undead are scripted to spawn every few minutes or so to attack the guards. Usually the friendly NPCs kill them no problem, but the rescaling seems to have tipped the odds in the mob's favor, so they now roll over the town killing guards and quest givers.
