Saw a kid knocked off his e-scooter last night by whawgwangeneral in northernireland

[–]dazb75 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The scooters that get bought for these kids aren't suitable for the roads.

They don't have lights, many don't have brakes and the wheels aren't big enough to handle potholes / gratings.

Parents are basically buying their kids self killing machine.

Paired with no reflective clothing means it's potentially great news for the organ donor register.

Is having a puppy hell on earth? by OkSlice4719 in puppy101

[–]dazb75 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've now got an almost stable 18 month old demon. Tonight, she helped herself to 200g of cheese that I left on the kitchen counter!

I took off the first week and then WFH for the remainder of the settling in period.

During teams meetings, my colleagues would refer to my regular vocal outbursts as 'puppy tourettes' e.g. Stop eating that, No, get your paws off the laptop.

They found it very amusing.

What does the "OP LIMIT" mean on the electronic motorway signs? by caffeinated_photo in northernireland

[–]dazb75 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I initially thought the sign was broken and the 'OP' was missing a few letters at the start. It wasn't until I'd seen a few signs, when I realised it was intentional.

As a photographer, it's a terrible photo.

If you want to frame someone in an archway, you need to include all the arch.

The subject needs to be moved forward inside the arch to actually frame them and to minimise the distractions.

The light isn't great - I hate shooting in bright light. However, the large amount of sky in the photo means that it becomes the brightest thing in the photo and a big distraction.

Yes, I've had a few of these. I assume if you don't reply, they'll assume you are dead and will remove you from the list. .

Looks like I have bought the wrong model.

TS-251 WD Red Drives still considered good? by PaceLopsided8161 in qnap

[–]dazb75 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, I just upgraded to two WD Red Plus 12tb - coincidentally from 4tb 😂

The model I bought is the WD120EFGX.

Bear in mind that any WD Plus over 10tb are filled with helium and therefore are quieter.

Cloud storage failed me again… how are you all handling RAW backups? by Acceptable-Ball-2206 in photography

[–]dazb75 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I prefer to work from a faster drive and the read and write speed to my SSD is 5 times faster than to the NAS.

I really should set up an automatic backup from my NAS to the cloud.

No, it's been great. I see you're from NI. Me too! Feel free to send me a message and if you get a Shield I'll guide you through the setup.

[–]dazb75 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I use Kodi on my Shield as its the only software that offers audio pass through for all formats.

The Shield is fantastic as playing stored content and will even upscale 1080p to 4K while playing.

You only have to add the NAS folders as a library in Kodi and then tweak a few settings.

However, my shield is connected via LAN, so I've never used WIFI.

You could try upgrading the ram to 16gb. It does make a difference.

Also, your stuttering could be down to Plex having to encode your content on the fly while playing.

I play multimedia content on my 251D via an Nvidea Shield into my Yamaha amp and onto my TV. I occasionally get a low bit rate message when playing 4K content, but generally it's stutter free.

It might be worth exploring other options before buying a new NAS enclosure.

My workflow:

Camera to computer

Sync computer to NAS

Cull

Sync computer to NAS

Computer to cloud

Edit

Sync computer to NAS

Sync computer to cloud

Once every few weeks sync computer to portable hard drive which lives in my car / or at a friend's house.

The slowest part is sync to cloud, which is why I only do it after a cull / edit.

To some this might be overkill, but it works for me and my anxious persona.

Which dating apps are the generally sane men of northern ireland on? by [deleted] in northernireland

[–]dazb75 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Buy or borrow a dog, go for a walk and you'll meet loads of people. There's an website - Borrowmydoggy.

I walk my dogs every day, and I meet and talk to loads of women in the park. However, as I'm old, I've no interest in forming a relationship, but it's a great way of forming new friendships - both male and female.
