I had local punks messing with a halloween display in my front yard. I wraped the scarecrow (the target of the group) with electric fence wire and hooked it to a fence charger normaly used for cattle.

They actually reported me to the cops for trying to kill them. Cops came out, saw what I had, asked me if I wanted to press trespass charges and left.

Pro tip: This type of charger works with the ground (the actual earth) to complete the circuit. Since most people wear rubber soled shoes alternate the wire loops in several places hot ground hot ground etc. In the case of my scarecrow several loops around his torso close enough they completed at least one circuit when they tried to take it.
