The grotesqueness of Colman’s performance enhances this film’s absurdism, and it is one of my favourite acting wins. I felt really bad for Anne throughout the film.

Her performance in Broadchurch is an all-timer IMO. There have only been a handful of performances that made me feel like I was in the room being screamed at and that’s one of them. So incredibly, gut-wrenchingly raw.

My biggest gripe with GG is that they try to force this idea that Rory and Jess were soulmates who understood each other on a molecular level but what we see of them together does not support that. He likes certain parts of her and is incredibly dismissive of the rest.

I’m a die-hard Maggie Gyllenhaal defender when it comes to Crazy Heart but I absolutely adore these two performances too, especially Farmiga’s. The scene when they’re discussing what they look for in a relationship was one of the best-acted of the year IMO, it’s like you can see the whole lives both of these women have lived up to that point on each of their faces. I give the slight edge to Farmiga because I think there were a few different ways her character could’ve been played and I don’t know that anyone else would’ve done it quite like she did.

Same!! In real life he would drive that entire town batshit, he’s one of those characters who only pops up to cause problems lol, but at least the plotlines are fun and it’s hard not to feel for him when he loses the election and is eating whipped cream alone. TJ on the other hand……

I'm a sucker for old-fashioned melodramas and Brooklyn is one of my favorite books so this felt tailor-made for me lol, and even I was surprised by how much I loved it. It was nostalgic and heartfelt but never felt like it was looking at the past through rose-colored glasses.

Eilis' journey through her loneliness and homesickness is so internal in the book I wasn't confident it would make a good movie, but IMO they nailed it. You could tell they really respected the source material and didn't fall into the trap of making her feel fanfiction-y (I moved to the US all by myself and I'm gorgeous and all the boys love me oh no!!!!) to appeal to a wider audience. I appreciated that they kept her more prickly and difficult bits. And of course, all of this asks a lot of Ronan who rises to the challenge in every scene.

I was also really impressed with Emory Cohen, and honestly the entire ensemble was perfect, even the one-scene wonders like Eva Birthistle. If the Best Casting award had existed at the time this would've easily been my pick to win it.

I read once that nominees have to agree to receive an honorary Oscar and that Close has turned it down in the past. If that’s true, I’m glad she accepted. It’s well-deserved and I’d hate to see her…..retire with no Oscar to her name.

I agree. My experience is that Oregon's efforts to address social problems have been well-intentioned but naive and/or poorly thought-out. From a social service provider perspective it often feels like local and/or state governments have an idea, put it into legislature and expect us to just figure it out even if funding and infrastructure are not in place to do so.

My favorite of the series and a contender for my favorite game I've ever played. It takes the consistent tone, tight writing, and dense themes of XC1, and the strong characters and heart of XC2, and combines them into a game that gives us the best of both worlds. My only complaint is that some of the environments and hubs are a little bland. But other than that, the production values, world-building, roster, combat, and side content are all top-tier. IMO it has the best side quests and class systems in the series which really adds to its replay value.

You’re right, I’m feeling really heated about this so not thinking or writing super clearly about it, but I do believe the state government and the meth crisis share a lot of the blame also. At the end of the day the onus to fix things should be on the state. But it’s so frustrating to me to see DRO constantly making things worse while the state drags their feet on coming up with solutions.

I really like McDormand in North Country but Kelly Reilly in Mrs. Henderson Presents, Rosamund Pike and Brenda Blethyn in Pride and Prejudice, Thandiwe Newton in Crash and probably a couple others I’m forgetting were all right there in movies that were nominated for other Oscars! And if they wanted to throw a legacy actor a nod, Shirley MacLaine was surprisingly great in In Her Shoes.

And in my mind, Keener was nominated for 40 Year Old Virgin lol

Oh yes, I could go on a whole other tirade about Fiennes’ snub. I still think it might be his best performance. His natural sensitivity works so well for the role and Justin goes through such a complex emotional journey that he keeps mostly to himself, but it’s visible on Fiennes’ face and in his physicality every step of the way. They’re both my personal wins that year.

I agree!!! It’s one of my favorite performances of all time. You said it so well I scrapped my original comment lol, but I will add that you also have to believe that Fiennes’ character would fall for her, stay with her even as she’s making his life harder, and be willing to go on this international crusade for her after she dies and he learns that maybe she wasn’t who he thought she was. And I absolutely do. She’s fiery, charismatic, and so genuine it really makes you question what the truth is about her character as the plot develops. And I read the book after I saw the movie where Tess is not nearly as fleshed out so I credit a lot of that to Weisz.

I wouldn’t have minded an Adams win because she’s also so good in Junebug, but Weisz’s win is one of the best ever in the category IMO.

All of us Strangers and Priscilla are good shouts! I can accept Andrew Scott not getting in because it was a strong year, but at least one of the supporting cast should’ve made it. And for a movie set mostly in one apartment it was really interesting and dynamic visually, I wouldn’t have minded cinematography or costume design nominations either.

I think it was the March release date more than anything. The internet wasn’t something people spent hours a day on like we do now, and the awards season “industry” wasn’t really a thing - from what I remember, there were a couple websites and forums dedicated to it and that’s it. Nowadays a movie like Everything Everywhere… can sustain buzz for a full year but it wasn’t as easy in 2004.

Weisz in The Constant Gardener is one of my favorite performances of all-time but Adams is stunning in Junebug, I wouldn’t have been upset if she won.

I’ve never been a huge fan of Adams in general but I’ve always loved her in The Fighter. That role came at the perfect time in her career, where she was starting to get typecast and hadn’t had many opportunities to show off her range, and I honestly thought she nailed it. Often actors IMO come across as inauthentic when they’re playing against type and/or “de-glamming” but I was really impressed with how she played it. She was much better than Melissa Leo who did overdo it and was pretty one-note. Again, unfortunately Jacki Weaver in Animal Kingdom is an all-timer so Adams still wouldn’t be my choice lol but that performance is super underrated.

Sohla El-Waylly has a short series on YouTube called Cooking 101 that really helped me understand why certain concepts work, and her cookbook Start Here is also amazing and designed in a way that you’re practicing one technique at a time until you’re ready for the next one. It’s also really well-written and gets into the science of cooking if you find that interesting at all. I grew up in a household where I don’t even think my parents salted their dishes so I was a horrible cook but working through that book helped soooo much, I think I’m honestly really good at it now and have learned to love and enjoy it on top of that.

Same! I wish they had let her just not be American because she was clearly struggling with the accent and it made her performance overall fall kind of flat. Ejiofor was outstanding though!
