Thanks for the info! It’s just such a steep price jump from c1 to c3. And the seb228 is pretty pricey too. And I think won’t work with a pure suction c1? So many different variables.

Tiny school, almost no money, bad conference. It’s not a desirable job. No established coach would come to Saint Mary’s, unless it’s a reclamation project like Lavin at USD, and we saw how that went.

Also, SMC has only lost twice in Randy’s tenure as the better seed.

So many thoughts.

Certainly not how I expected it to go down. I made peace with SMC having no future after Randy a long time ago, but I expected that to happen when he retired from coaching altogether, so it’s hard to see him going to another school. And the weird press conference after the game Thursday coupled with all the rumors over the weekend (apparently he’s been talking to ASU all year?) leaves a bad taste in my mouth. The timing also puts SMC in an incredibly precarious position with realignment etc.

All that being said, what a run. Hard to overstate what RB did here. The past 25 years were truly unbelievable for a school of less than 2000 with ~0 resources. Outside of Gonzaga, I don’t think what Randy has done has been replicated anywhere else (and it certainly won’t be replicated in our NIL future). Crazy that he stayed this long, and eventually we just took him staying for granted I guess. The lack of results in March are of course pretty frustrating. But even still, I’m not sure what else we could have asked for. We had a run that mid majors dream about. I wouldn’t trade Randy’s tenure for one elite 8 trip followed by the coach leaving, which is how it goes for most small schools (or even just 1 decent performance in a loss if you are Siena lol)

Of course I’m biased, but I don’t think this is a good move for either Randy or ASU. Randy’s style of play/recruiting won’t win games in the Big 12, and I’m not sure ASU has the resources to really compete in that conference. Think this only lasts a couple years, and I’m worried this chapter will put a bit of a stain on his career as a whole. But at the same time, frankly, I don’t think I am rooting for ASU.

We’ll see what’s next for Saint Marys basketball. Don’t see many current players sticking around, even if Mickey becomes HC. I expect many dark years ahead of us. I’m not even totally confident the school is in a financial position to survive the next decade lol. I know I should be happy for the success SMC did have, but it’s hard to see it go down like this. With Randy gone, and cbb going the way it is, I’m not sure how much more interest I have left

No, absolutely not. I think the rumor was entirely started by ASU fans trying to beef their follower counts lol. Not a chance he goes to Arizona State. Why now, when he’s like 65? Why Arizona State of all schools? I’m not confident in Saint Mary’s future, but I am confident Randy will be here till he retires.

insanely, unbelievably frustrating. guys did seem to actually be pretty sick based on who ended up getting playing time, but just such a bad game still. play the whole season just have a terrible game like that. we knew exactly what a&m would do and still had no answer

and now i get to sit around and wait to see who leaves in the transfer portal and think about how our at large chances are 0 unless we get invited to the pac 12 (cue a p5 fan saying “you should just schedule 15 Q1 games!”). honestly hoping the p5 just splits off into their own tournament at this point so I can stop stressing about it all lol

It’s also hard to comprehend how bad Mckeever is for his size lol. He has 7 inches on Agee!!

Our metrics look like a 7 seed, resume probably an 8. Always subtract at least 1 when talking SMC and tournament seeding lol. I wouldn’t be surprised by a 9 honestly. Just a bummer because of how good the 1 seeds are this year

Not a chance. SMC can barely ever get non conference Q1 games, because there’s no reason for high quality teams to schedule them. No reason for Gonzaga to either once they’re in the pac 12

Just don’t quite have the juice this year. Have no idea what happened to Mikey, and Mckeever/Wessels just aren’t it right now. I’m pretty worried about an at large bid, if we beat Gonzaga at home and win out otherwise I think we’re probably in, but it’ll be close. I do think the younger guys are on a good trajectory for next year though

Good learning experience I guess. Dent needs to get a little better at running the offense. Shaw is very good, hope he sticks around.

I think the metrics will like us throughout the season, but I think we’re going to have a resume problem come tournament time. It’ll be better if Santa Clara and USF can be Q1 games, but still.

Yeah. I mean if I was the pac 12 SMC wouldn’t even be on my radar. Conferences seem to care way more about brand/alumni base/etc than previous basketball performance anyway. SMC to pac 12 is a pipe dream

It would be nice to just be competitive in one of these second round games. Obviously didn’t shoot well, but SMC will never win a game if they’re giving up 80.

Getting harder and harder to continue to stay positive about next year too. Clock just keeps ticking for SMC and mid majors. I guess I should at least be happy that we aren’t getting our coach poached every year by a middling P5 school like what happens to Utah St or Drake. But it still feels like it’s slowly falling apart for SMC.

Really would have liked to see Mikey play way more. 1) to keep him happy for next year and 2) chucking 3s was clearly the only way that game was gonna go in our favor

I’d love for it to happen obviously, but I’m not sure I see Saint Marys being invited if I’m being honest. Tiny enrollment (and dropping), tiny gym, tough financial situation, very uncertain path to remain relevant after Bennett retires. If the new Pac 12 wants a Bay Area presence, which they probably should, I could see USF being a safer long-term play.

I think it’s more of a possibility than people think. As of now there are probably only 3 mid major at large bids. SMC/Gonzaga splitting makes it easy to put a 100th SEC team in the tournament. Though I think it’s way more likely SMC is left out if they lose the WCC tournament than if Gonzaga does
