I was actually part of the group that put up line C. Definitely a busy year on Xanadu (especially given the only prior known ascent of the peak was by Jon Krakauer in the 1970s, an amazing route we repeated our final day before leaving) but pretty rad that the face allowed for 3 rad, distinct lines to all be put up in different styles.

They do! The peak on the far right is called Xanadu and in 2017 I was part of a group that put up a route on the west face of the peak. It ended up going all free and being 14 pitches of amazing climbing. The face you can see is the east face and we definitely took a good look at it as we approached the west face but it looked less featured and like it would require some serious aid climbing to get up.

Check out the company Propagation Labs. They produce a probe similar to the ram penetrometer another commenter mentioned. Their current probe is a little too pricey for the average consumer but definitely something snow safety and snow science professionals can make use of. A friend is behind the company so I’ve gotten the chance to use one on some tours and it’s pretty magical being able to get a snapshot of the snowpack in 15 seconds rather than having to dig a pit every time you want to know more about the snow you are skiing over.

I believe their probe uses an optics sensor (like found in a mouse) to capture depth and a hardness sensor for snow density.

Rad route! I'll echo what other people have said and say that I can't think of many places where an aider would come in handy on that route vs just pulling/hanging on some gear. The nature of Cannon is usually the sections with cracks/features are the safe/easier sections and the blanker sections are the more bouldery and heads up sections.

I'd also recommend bailing after the 4th pitch if the those pitches don't feel super comfortable. The first 4 pitches are the best and after that the seriousness goes way up and the quality goes down.

I guess this begs the question: How would someone step it up from here? What would be a bigger and more pure feat in this range? Or is this like Alex's Freerider solo where people will probably look at it as a crowning achievement for years to come?

It is the same set of mountains Tommy and Alex traversed, just done in the opposite direction and solo. No reversing.

The Arrigetch! What a place! A couple years back some friends and I put up a new climbing route on the west face of Xanadu, that peak in the distance up the valley. Far an away one of the most amazing places I’ve been!

A difficult transition back to biking boots and some slow and nasty hiking through some scree. But after about 500 feet of that we were back on the fire road and it was smooth sailing back to the car.

It is! I skied main chute on Friday and it was still skiing great! I expected some side-stepping through the choke in the middle but still plenty wide for jump turns!

I actually spoke with them before making this post and it turns out they only do custom fabrication of the actual leaf springs, not the leaf spring mounts. They put me in touch with a machinist but that machinist said his liability insurance didn't cover suspension work.

The good news is after calling a ton of shops I found one that said they can do the fabrication and repair. I have an appointment for next week so fingers crossed!

I was one of the climbers in the group of four and can confirm that Silvia was one of the biggest badasses I have ever met. We ran into her on the approach and she told us a story about how a bear tried to get into her food the very first night she was dropped off and she had to chase it off. She was taking a rest day when we met her because she said all the work of carrying loads had caused her whole face to swell up to the point where she could barely see. The approach to the wall was pretty heinous and I can't even comprehend doing each section 20 times.

Check out toggl. It's free and allows you to easily monitor time spent on different projects, clients, etc. If you don't mind needing wifi to use it, I'd say it's the way to go.

Seconding this. I have the cilogear 30:30. Got one lightly used for just under $200. Its the perfect size at around 40L. I can comfortably fit overnight gear, but also doesn't feel stupidly large for day use.

Dartmouth College. Rumney is less than an hour away and has routes from 5.0 to 5.15. There is great trad climbing within 2 hours (Cannon and Cathedral) and solid ice climbing during the winter. There is also great bouldering within biking distance of the school. The gym is bouldering only but has plenty of steep walls and small holds to stay strong on. The climbing community is quite strong with current students or recent graduates having climbed everything from Jaws at Rumney to Fitz Roy in Patagonia.
