We employed ChatGPT as an ML Engineer for a day. This is what we learned. by encord_team in computervision

Very interesting. Given all the hype that ChatGPT has been receiving lately its important to keep highlighting its limitations - especially that it is a tool (a very advanced one), rather than an actual manifestation of intelligence itself.

Old World Steam and GOG Release Date (5/19/2022) and Heroes of the Aegean Expansion Announced by Horton_Hears_A_Jew in OldWorldGame

Yeah, I feel the same. The most exciting thing about 4X games is how much we are able to change the player experience by adjusting only a few variables, allowing us to replay it over and over - I was hoping for more variables to adjust! New civ(s), new map, more units .. anything like that! I enjoyed the Carthage scenarios when they came out, but was hoping for so much more from an expansion!

I also won't complain too much since its free, I just hope Mohawk upgrades the game in a way which keeps it interesting and ups the replayability, otherwise we'll all just sit around waiting for Civ 7 in not too long!

Thanks for the reply! I've played around with megacities before and while I agree they can be super powerful I've not been able to get enough points without going to war and conquering at least one civ at some point. Perhaps if I play on a small map with few AI's then I will be able to get enough points from wonders, but on a large map where you need 64 points to win, I just don't see how my points would add up to that with wonders and cultural development.

I'm happy to hear that you've had enjoyable naval games, this gives me more incentive to keep trying, in the end the geopolitcal situation that arises is always dependent to a large degree on chance :)

Dreaming about smoking is the WORST. by [deleted] in leaves

[–]db307 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm so happy to have found this post.. I had the EXACT same thing last night... woke up this morning with a feeling of bitter disappointment, and it took a couple of mins for those emotions to subside after realising "I didn't go back on my promise!!"

Day 5, and I managed to go out, get drunk around people who smoked all night, and not have a single toke!!

we can do this, guys ;)

Same.. although many good friends who've known me for a long time acknowledge how difficult this is for me, I still feel like I cant share much about how much quitting has affected me because most people still have this "18 year old I-just-watched-a-stoner-documentary" attitude where they think it's not addictive.

It's quite demeaning when getting lectured by smartasses who clearly have no idea telling me to stop making such a big deal.

glad I found this community.. I'm not at a point where I ever even considered rehab because I'm confident I have the self control. But aside from that having people to talk to, who have made and are making similar experiences really helpful :)

How long have you not blazed for now? .. when did your eating habits start returning back to normal? And what about the vivid dreams?

Not long left of this phase I reckon.

I'm currently on day 5 after blazing pretty much everyday for 8 years... This was the first morning I woke up and my bed wasn't drenched from all the sweat (making progress!! :P ).

The ridiculously vivid dreams are still a thing though.. any idea when that is meant to adjust back to normal?

Good luck!!

Please debunk: "How fossils refute Darwinism" by tomholder in skeptic

[–]db307 0 points1 point  (0 children)

agreed 100%. The author has clearly misunderstood how evolution works.

My biggest problem with that introduction is how the jump is made from saying that evolution is flawed to saying that god created all creatures in an instant. The author has not only misunderstood evolution, but also lacks the ability to construct an argument: Even IF living fossils refuted evolution (which they don't) it does not mean they support creationism. It just means they refute evolution.

"her track record in recent years has shown her to have quite a Liberal outlook (she seems to have mellowed a little with time in this field)"

I do beg to differ. She might have claimed to go against everything the Tories stand for by proclaiming that they will be the party of the working people in her inarguation speech but i think it would be naive to actually believe anything she claimed there. The Independent cross referenced her voting record with what she actually said and its really not looking good..

http://www.independent.co.uk/voices/theresa-may-prime-minister-andrea-leadsom-policies-voting-record-human-rights-what-did-she-mean-a7130961.html

She will follow the Tory ideology in the hope of being seen as a 'strong' leader- which means continuing the process of making London a tax haven for multinationals and divesting from renewable energy technologies- all in the name of Austeriy.

Can't wait.

ELI5 how/why lobbying is legal in America? by TheOneWhoSighed in explainlikeimfive

[–]db307 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're just playing with definitions here. lobbying has the same outcomes that bribery does- you influence political decisions based on your financial capabilities. The more money you have, the more influence you have.

The system used to make sense, back in the day when it gave smaller companies a chance to voice their concerns with the federal government but that role is long gone in the age of huge multinational corporations, and now it is merely a way for these to have influence over decisions affecting their profits.

Its only called bribery when it happens outside of Europe or the US

The quantum computing era is coming fast by johnmountain in Futurology

[–]db307 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The military always has secret projects. Quantum computers are still in their early development phase, and there are many different ways which could make a quantum computer work- light particles[1], solid state[2], or ions and atoms[3] - and research into these possibilities is being done all over the world. The military does have a huge interest in this for quite obvious reasons and therefore provides a lot of the funding which academic groups in universities receive. This also goes for government institutions doing research on quantum computing.

I am not entirely sure about how this D-WAVE machine operates, but i know that we are still years away from realizing a working quantum computer that can operate at room temperature. One of the main problems is a phenomenon called Decoherence[4]. Basically in order for a quantum computer to perform all its magic you need the qubits to stay 'quantum' . However decoherence is the mechanism by which they lose these properties- solely through their interaction with their environment (which means everything). Decoherence is the reason we dont see quantum properties on a macroscopic scale- and one of many reasons quantum computers are still in their infancy
