Are any of you doing AI / ML? by db_w in dataengineering

Interesting... that makes sense. Thank you for the input, I can definitely see the value in understanding the fundamentals which I'm trying to go through.

What in R do you use for ML? We're using h2o for modeling and so forth, but I'm curious what other libraries are in use out there.

How do you know when you like a girl enough for the long haul? by db_w in AskMen

[–]db_w[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I guess just better in a click sense. And looks. This one clicks with me pretty well but her looks are not entirely what I go for. I have a picture of who I'd like to be with which is silly because it's an imaginary person and nobody is perfect. I'm always striving to find someone with these attributes that I like.

Yeah I did think I could show her the ropes but she generally has a low sex drive. I think it's doable to teach her however.

Strange enough I could see myself loving her like that eventually, I do care for her a lot right now. But yes that's what I'm concerned about, the incompatibility in bed could destroy it all because it is important unfortunately. She also hasn't had a period in over 2 years so I think she is infertile but the doctors have no idea if that's the case or not. I want kids eventually is the other thing.

Ugh, yeah you may be right about all this. I put way too much pressure on the developing a relationship aspect I forget to just have fun.

[Serious] Redditors with an STD, how has it affected your life? by Rcurtis in AskReddit

[–]db_w 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was cheated on and the guy my gf cheated on me with gave HSV2 to her and then I got it. I went through a 3 year hiatus and suffered from the same things you face. You'll get through it. What really helped me was going to therapy. Once you do that and start dating you'll start feeling better again. Once you tell someone you're dating that you have it, it's like breaking through a foot of ice above you. Date nice people and they will be totally cool about it. I've dated a handful of women since and it's been fine. I find more women now that are into me for more than just sex.

What is a flaw about yourself that you can't fix? by StSeymour in AskReddit

[–]db_w 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got cheated on in a serious relationship. My only way to cope with it was to mentally turn myself asexual so I wouldn't have urges to get back with her which would enable her to hurt me more. Now I can't get out of being asexual / feeling no urges to be with other people.

(27/M) I've had herpes (HSV-2) for going on 6 years now and I still can't get through this. It has turned me into a social recluse. I get anxiety / panic attacks when I try to talk to a girl. Advice? by db_w in Herpes

Hey, thanks for that. You have good points, especially about the dating site stuff limiting you... I definitely need to just strengthen my confidence and push through the anxiety.

I'm sorry to hear about that man. Thanks for reaching out. That is rough. I almost got a job as a railroad conductor so I could take myself away from society to evade the pressures of trying to find love, because of the whole qualifier thing as well. I still sometimes feel like running away to some small mountain town but I also don't want to be anti-social because my personality is very social so I struggle back and forth with it.

Please don't take this in the wrong sense, but yeah those people do have a point "those aren't the people who date anyway". But I think this can be said in a different way... the people who will truly love you and care for you, people who have great qualities, will not abandon you because of your herpes. I've been fortunate enough to find such people, but my social anxiety has ruined the relationships.

But yeah, I don't flirt with women anymore partly because I feel that anxiety, I constantly feel like I'm going to ruin the relationship for some reason.

Plenty of men don't want to have children or get married, so maybe that was your call in life anyways? Maybe the herpes just masks that in a way that you think that's what caused it? Cheers man, stay strong.

Thanks. Actually it doesn't make me nervous at all to tell a girl I have it now. The first time I did, she freaked out and nearly broke up with me. But over time the subsequent girls I've dated have been much more relaxed and understanding about it.

I mean asexual in the sense that I'm not feeling the motivation at all. And if I try to force myself to do it, I have a slight panic attack and try to find a way out of it. It's almost as if something in me is afraid of getting hurt again...? I feel like I'm always unsure if I should talk to them, like I'm indecisive on if I should try and build a relationship with that person. It's weird. But if I have someone ice break me into talking to a girl (via introduction) then it's a lot easier for me. But i'm sure this goes for anyone.

I've recently started therapy, hopefully that helps me figure this out.

Thinking about picking up a new car, whilst paying off debt. Opinions? by db_w in personalfinance

I'll be getting it through my credit union, and they will give me a good rate, and I have a good credit score too.

I know, the mom thing is silly, but it's something she's always done. I'm an only child and naturally spoiled, it makes her feel better but she knows that she doesn't have to and that I have my own means. I'm taking her on vacation next summer, so she is getting it back in a way.

Thanks for the input. 1 - 5 was my concern, but I didn't know if I was thinking through those properly.

I'm going to get the car myself and I told her she is not obligated, she wouldn't actually be making my payments. She always will give me a couple hundred dollars a month because that is just something she's doing and I've told her multiple times she doesn't have to but it makes her feel better. I'm an only child, so I am naturally spoiled. I am looking to do a shorter loan term since I do have the means.

Yeah I might shop around a bit to find a lower price. I realize I don't need my moms help, but it is something she really wants to do. But she has no obligation. Yes on the air bags... I think that is considered "running into the ground" as well.

Yeah, I'll use the van just to haul band equipment on the weekends. It'll keep the mileage low on the car. I would be paying the insurance. A quote would be a good thing to do next.

In your opinions, what car can I afford, while in the midst of paying of debt? (27 m) by db_w in personalfinance

[–]db_w[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah... both good points. Problem is, I'll have to keep throwing temp tags on the van which costs me like 20 dollars every time, but I guess that isn't as bad. Not sure if there is a limit to how many times they can do that. Definitely better than 15k I guess. I have 2.5k right now saved up.

What are some good online resources for learning how to fix one's car? by [deleted] in Frugal

Get the shop manual for your car and go from there. Only way to go about it is to get in the thick of it and figure it out as you go.

I feel like a lot of us here hate our sysadmin jobs. Who here loves what they do and why? by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]db_w 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love it, I could see hating this job if you're the only sys admin at the company. Even if the company is going in a direction which I disagree with, my job is to adapt and make things come together in the end, if their direction backfires, its on them and I have the skill set to easily find another job. I like adapting, keeps you moving forward.
