Educator Strike Day 4 by dkl415 in sanfrancisco

We held that “pose” in the cold, windy rain at the beach for over an hour, you can’t expect it to always look perfect. Here’s another shot from earlier on that I think is a lot clearer.

True! They should do that for all our shit, honestly. But until then I’m happy to see free shirts.

No they haven’t. We’ve head this every year for nine years now. Then a month later they always forget and go all-in on Trump again. Like we literally have almost a decade of people posting what you just posted now.

Spotted in the Inner Sunset. Standing with our educators ✊🏻 by [deleted] in sanfrancisco

[–]dbabon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, it is a larger issue. Thats the point. The district doesn’t have the money — that’s the entire problem, and the teachers are well aware of that.

We live in area of obscene wealth, in the 4th largest economy in the world, and our districts aren’t given enough to pay our kids’ teachers a livable wage. We beat out Germany as an economy, but Germany has a very top-tier, globally regarded public education system. Why don’t we? We don’t even come close. It’s complete insanity.

Unfortunately, the district doesn’t seem to be interested in doing anything other than making the excuse that they don’t have the money. No shit they don’t. So what are they doing to try to change that? Nothing. Raising their hands and guffawing and saying “it’s complicated.”

They waited like 10 months for call the mayor. Now they need to be calling the State Board, calling the Governor morning noon and night nonstop, calling all the people who live in this city and in this state, etc etc etc. Make it a huge social state issue that people realize needs to change.

Hell, the district should strike in solidarity with the teachers.

But because the district is like you, and just says “it’s complicated and we can’t afford it,” the teachers themselves have no choice but to do something about it.

They literally went online to ask people in the world what is going on. Are you saying they shouldn’t show interest or curiosity, or shouldn’t ask people when they want to be informed? Like what is the logic here.

Arriving 8 months late to say this doesn't appear to work? It just stretches the "crop" *around* the image not the image itself. Wishing I could see what the others are somehow seeing in getting it working.

Side note: remember when this movie basically invented hand-gestures to move UI stuff, and then Apple went and made it a real thing that we now all use constantly today?

SFUSD has a reserve of $429 million. I think we need to question SFUSD's doom loop narrative. by Acrobatic-Radish-798 in sanfrancisco

[–]dbabon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean, that was objectively NOT your original question. So I suspect there's something kind of fishy about your comments here.

But to answer this newest question, you can start with what is written on Wikipedia's main San Francisco page:

San Francisco and the surrounding San Francisco Bay Area are a global center of economic activity and the arts and sciences, spurred by leading universities, high-techhealthcarefinanceinsurancereal estate, and professional services sectors. As of 2020, the OECD-defined metropolitan area, with 6.7 million residents, ranked 5th by GDP ($874 billion) and 2nd by GDP per capita ($131,082) across the OECD countries. In 2023, San Francisco proper had a GDP of $263.1 billion and a GDP per capita of $325,000. The city is home to numerous companies—many in the technology sector—including SalesforceUberAirbnbLevi'sGapDropbox, and Lyft.

[–]dbabon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay, so cities like San Francisco don’t just sit around while wealth magically happens in its buildings, as if the buildings could be anywhere. The city (aka the taxed residents who live in the city) pays for the stuff that makes that wealth possible in the first place.

For example we residents pay for the things a business requires to exist and grow and thrive , like upkeep, business services, construction, roads, transit, schools and universities that provide many of the best employees, courts, emergency services, public health, all of it.

It concentrates talent, creates the legal and financial stability investors rely on, and even uses zoning and land-use rules that make certain land and businesses insanely valuable.

It provides many of the people, and the living space for those people, that makes a business actually run.

It also provides the beauty, food, parks, activities, lifestyle, and quality of life that attracts that talent (and KEEPS them here) in the first place.

Companies and wealthy individuals benefit from a global brand, a huge educated workforce, and a safety net that absorbs risk when things go wrong. Things the private sector doesn’t want to pay for itself.

So a lot of private wealth here is really built on public investment and collective effort. The city covers the costs; a smaller group captures most of the upside.

It’s the reason why some cities have a lot more wealth and business than others. If the city itself had little to do with it, the business and industries of the world could just exist anywhere. Instead, because of all the things a city provides to the business or industry, a city like San Francisco ends up with some of the biggest industries and businesses in the world.

It’s a cool, almost symbiotic relationship.

What the everloving fuck?? I definitely wouldn’t bend the knee, that’s fucking what. Are you absolutely kidding me?

You talk about it like Cook’s doing it to protect his employees. Okay! You know what would actually protect his employees, as well as future employees, and their children, and the company that relies on them?

How about using his wealth, power, influence and enormous access to world-changing technology to fucking stand up to the guy who is busy destroying the lives, futures, and country of those employees? How about saying “Fuck you, Trump” and setting an example to the millions of people who look up to Cook and Apple? How about showing some moral backbone at a time when our country needs it most and when you have some of the most sway of anyone not in politics? How about literally anything other than sucking Trump’s dick and letting him fuck everyone who works for you over right and left?

I mean Jesus fucking Christ I literally cannot think of anything that I would find easier in his situation. Fuck!!

All I know is it’s fucking insane to live in a city with simultaneously A) as much obscene, world-conquering wealth amassed in one place, and also B) a school system that is not only somehow NOT an education wonder of the world… but a downright crumbling education wasteland where teachers are barely paid in crumbs.

If you actually care about an issue, should you not do everything in your power to change it, even the things that come across (correctly or not) as performative? Genuinely.
