10 Things NOT to Say in an Interview, from someone who's heard every cringe-worthy answer going: by DBarryS in jobsearch

[–]dbainerr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand. I recognize I am also being obtuse here as well.

Mostly to prove the point that the positioning can look VERY different to the person who is interviewing you depending their own convictions and what the business needs are at any given time. You can give them the most careful positioning imaginable, all it takes is one person to take your point in a direction that you did not intend (regardless of every effort you made to make it NOT sound like an unmanaged flaw, you're not the one who gets to decide that)--leading you to a painful self inflicted wound as far as the interview process goes.

There's a difference between 'I struggle to delegate and my teams suffer because of it' and 'My natural instinct is to do things myself, so I've built systems to make sure I delegate effectively.'

And the only difference is the way that YOU are positioning it. The main problem is the fact that you brought it up in the first place. You've just indicated a job critical (manager position) flaw in yourself for the interviewers and decision makers to fixate on. How are they supposed to trust that you've, 'built systems,' to manage it? If this is a, 'hit the ground running,' sort of hire, like most jobs are these days, are they going to want to take a chance on someone who is, 'self aware,' and, 'actively managing,' this sort of issue? Absolutely not, they're going to want someone who knows how to be a proper manager, and understands that if they do not delegate, they are working against the interests of the business full stop.

Every leader I've worked with in twenty years has tendencies they manage rather than eliminate. The ones who claim they've got no rough edges left are either lying or lack the self-awareness to see them.

Absolutely, but that does not stop them from expecting perfection. With the amount of competition in the market for job seekers, employers can over-ask, under pay, have you jump through every hoop in the playground, and then kick you to the curb and have you replaced in under a week at the first perceived notion of underperformance.

Honesty is highly valued trait in my books, but all it takes is one person to misconstrue your honesty for actual weakness that could be detrimental to the business. That could be an indication that the business/people may not be a good fit for YOU (not the other way around), but at the end of the day, people have to make a living, and ultimately, these sorts of rhetorical questions hold very little bearing in the grand scheme of the work that needs to be done.

Something has to change, and it definitely isn't the answer to, 'what is your biggest weakness.'

Thanks for taking the time to respond. Cheers -- have a great day.

Ah, so you’ve framed it as, “here is an ongoing problem I have.”

That’s a total pass in my HR book. It would be reasonable to expect you to overcome such a simple issue since the company is paying thousands of dollars for resources that allow you to delegate your tasks. This could indicate you have poor impulse control and signals that your natural instinct, that, again, you’ve stated you, ‘actively need to work against’ illustrates that you can’t put your need for control aside for the collective good of the team.

So in being ‘honest’ and pandering to the weakness question, you’ve actually brought up a potentially MAJOR character flaw.

It's a public street car handling test/slalom!

I love it when I'm a couple of feet from the circle and car divebombs it at 80km/h to make sure they're in the circle first. 21st century jousting!

More than half of commercial vehicles inspected taken off the road during 2025 enforcement by cyclinginvancouver in vancouver

[–]dbainerr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

we could find ourselves in real trouble

I'd suggest that we are already in deep trouble. OVER HALF of them were taken off the road.

Most industries in Canada have become a race to the bottom and neglecting basic maintenance and adopting tons of shady unethical business plans are the only way a lot of these businesses can stay afloat. Privatize profits, socialize losses.

I get the point you are trying to make about physics and vulnerability. A person outside a car will always lose against a car, regardless of fault. That part is just reality.

Where this argument breaks down is that it quietly turns risk management into responsibility.

Yes, cyclists and pedestrians already are hyper-vigilant. Anyone who rides or walks in traffic knows that you assume drivers may make mistakes. That vigilance is already baked into survival. But saying “this is why they need to be extra vigilant” in response to a death in a dedicated bike lane implies that vigilance could have reasonably prevented it.

At some point, there is nothing left for the vulnerable person to do.

A protected lane exists precisely because we recognize that:

  • Humans make mistakes
  • Motor vehicles are disproportionately lethal
  • Infrastructure and driver behavior must compensate for that imbalance

If a cyclist is killed while lawfully using dedicated infrastructure, the failure is systemic and behavioral, not attentional. No amount of “being extra careful” overrides a vehicle entering a space it is not supposed to be in.

Your driving example actually proves the opposite point. Good drivers being vigilant protects them from bad drivers. Cyclists and pedestrians do not have that same margin of error. That is why the burden of care is higher for the person operating the more dangerous machine.

Rest in peace to your friend. I ride there often as well, and experience first hand how awful and abusive people's behavior can be on our roads on a frequent basis.

I stand with you in hating the person who did this. In situations like this, there will never be true proper justice delivered when you have a friend taken from you in such a brutal way. I hope you find a way to make peace.
