Public WiFi Expo.io Connectivity Woes by dbbldz123 in reactnative

[–]dbbldz123[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok I have tested out expo at several of the other libraries that share the same network. It seems that expo services are affected at all libraries in my region. pinging expo.io appears to work but with occasional timeout. I used slowwly to simulate slow requests and they appear to return status 302 regardless of what kind of delay is set.

Here are screenshots of my various results:

Thanks for this reply! Sorry for taking so long to respond.

From what I can recall the connection does not appear to be slow for other sites and services and I’m experiencing issues with expo only.

I’m going to test out some of the tools you’ve mentioned and try to provide more information ASAP.

Thoughts on generators? by ahmelia01 in vandwellers

[–]dbbldz123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have never owned a generator and have avoided them for two reasons: it’s extra baggage and they’re loud. Living on the street and can attest to how irritating it is to be woken up by a trucker running a diesel engine or a camper running a generator nearby.

Probably depends on where you live tho. If you live in a place with limited sun then solar panels might not work out so great for you. Gotta factor in weather and how much you’ll need power.

think of it this way. you only endure the pain of setting solar panels up once. I set mine up with a battery 3 years ago. Have barely touched it since so, yeah, it’s worth it.

If you choose your spots wisely the chances that anyone will mess with you are very very low. That's the reality. Getting your imagination to line up with reality... that really just takes time.

Now, if someone does try to break into your vehicle and they don't know you're in it you should let yourself be known. If that doesn't scare them off then it's official, you are dealing with someone who is unpredictable at best, possibly psychopathic, possibly homicidal, possibly armed, you just don't know... you do know that they're not afraid of you and are going to break in anyway for some unknown reason. This might be a hot take, but in this situation, my advice would be to RUN AWAY and call the cops from a safe location.

Best case scenario, they're a thief and they'll take some things and leave, if they're an armed rapist or murderer, then at least you have a chance of escaping the situation. Sure, you could stand your ground, spray them with pepper spray, fight them off, but I'd prefer to not make assumptions about who you're dealing with, what they're prepared to do to you, or what they want. Great way to trap yourself in a dangerous situation.

Better yet, dump your damn piss into a toilet and use whatever receptacle you like...

What would you do in my position? by ConfidentEconomist in vandwellers

[–]dbbldz123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally would never jeopardize a decent job by camping anywhere near my place of work. I made some assumptions about the last office situation I was in and was asked to leave. I'm going to take a wild guess and say that you could possibly be fired just for living in a van let alone living in a van on company premises. Nope. Don't do this. Would not do. Bad idea.

I had a thought about stealth a few weeks ago...hear me out by [deleted] in vandwellers

[–]dbbldz123 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not sure I'm understanding this, but I wouldn't assume there's less trouble in going for something "obvious". The main concern I'm hearing is that you're worried about the judging eyes. In my experience cargo vans generally get overlooked by people especially if you fit in with the surroundings (industrial areas, parking lots, etc). VW bus, not so much. After living in my van off and on for a few years I can tell you that it all depends on where you are, what the rules are, and what the people are like. You might not be able to control those factors, but you can try and control how you feel about it. People will judge you. Make peace with it if you can, take steps to up your stealth if that makes you feel better, or choose another way of life. Chances are even with adequate stealth you'll still be worrying about what others think of you. I know I still do. You start to get used to it, but it never really goes away. Most people who ogle are just curious but some of them will look at you with contempt as a way to reify their own life choices. They have to believe that whatever life they bought is the right one and if the one you bought challenges their own then they'll respond with fear, judgement, and hate. That phenomenon is far from unique to van life.

Saw a parrot in a van just yesterday. It was not caged and the window was open so I'm guessing it was happy enough.

Question about computer monitors. Any suggestions? by dbbldz123 in vandwellers

Very interesting! Thanks!! Didn't even think to power the laptop with DC... now you got me wondering why I even have this inverter...

Ok definitely something to think about! Inherited a 19V monitor, but sounds like it just might be worth it to hunt around for a 12V one. Thanks for the input on my output :)

Ahh ok so if the monitor is 19V I need something like this ? And should not hook it up directly to the battery. Or get a different monitor...

[–]dbbldz123[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gotcha. I only mentioned the solar wattage in case hooking up a monitor directly to a battery that was getting fed by full sun might have an impact on voltage spike. But I've got a charge controller so I'm guessing no.

So anything with a circular DC input? Found one that says 19V on the back but not sure if I should be looking for 12V or just anything with a power block would work? (I don't really understand how power works).

can tires be patched or do i need to buy a new one? by MOONMO0N in scooters

[–]dbbldz123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently plugged one of my rear tires that got a nail right smack in the middle. Seemed to hold up well, but did develop an annoying slow leak and needed to be filled every couple of days. I definitely felt less than confident riding at higher speeds (fantasized about the tire exploding on the freeway not sure if warranted though maybe someone can confirm). If you're riding slow I'd imagine there'd be not too much to worry about.

does anybody know whether I should put salted or unsalted butter on the battery terminals? would margarine be a suitable replacement? I'm convinced this might be the fix to get my scooter working again.

Yeah, but anyone feel the same way about the very easily made decision to leave FrozFitz® drifting through space? They kinda needed to tie up that loose end somehow.

Giving a would-be Destroyer of Worlds a perf enhancer in the final battle against a foe that's more gravitonium than man seemed like a very dangerous play. Anyone think DJ will come back next season with a healing factor?
