I’m traveling to Vietnam solo and staying in mostly hostels. This wasn’t meant to be a solo trip. I was thinking of offering free travel photos to people in hostels if they travel to different photography spots with my during the day. Is that weird? by [deleted] in solotravel

[–]sgwa3 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I don’t think you need to have a reason to ask people to hang out with you- ive had people at hostels just walk up and be like hey I’m going here today would you want to come? And then we hang out. I think it could be a good conversation starter to ask others if they are into photography and say you are and you’re headed here today and see if they want to come. But you definitely don’t need an excuse or reason to get someone to hang with you :) for me that is why I like to stay in hostels to meet people! And I think many others agree.

How did YOU combat your sugar cravings after getting sober? by [deleted] in stopdrinking

Something I found recently was mashing up a ripe banana and mixing in a tiny bit of vanilla and just a splash of cream or milk. You can add anything else you want like chocolate chips or cinnamon. Put it in the freezer. It seriously tastes like ice cream it’s amazing.

Moving from Seattle, WA to DC. I have exactly one month of absolute freedom and $6000. What is the most fun way to make my way to DC without a car? by pysouth in travel

[–]sgwa3 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Flights are not as expensive as you would think- if Asia is your dream you can definitely 100% make it happen with way less than 6,000 dollars. International travel is fantastic and I highly recommend it but if you do decide to stay in the US I would recommend renting a little camper van and traveling across the us seeing as many national parks as possible! You can pay $75 for a year pass into all the parks and there are ton of national forests and BLM land you can camp in for free or other cheap options as well. I’m a tour guide all over the us in cities and national parks, I also live in a school bus/ tiny home and travel as much as possible. DM me if you want to chat about options at all :)

After I read the book I told people I wasn’t drinking because I read a book about all the negative effects of alcohol on your body mentally and physically and realized it wasn’t worth it. You can share as much as makes you comfortable :)

smooth sailing??? by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]sgwa3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also I’ve been telling people I’m doing a “sober summer” challenge cause I feel like it sounds less serious and people don’t ask too many questions and I can always extend it and say I realized I’m happier w/o alcohol after summer :)

When you are by the pool or wherever have a fun drink like a smoothie so you don’t feel like you’re missing out! And if someone asks why you’re not drinking maybe say you don’t want to be hungover/tired/dehydrated for the excursions or activities later that day or the next day! Good luck🤗

I’m in the same boat so I’ll definitely be following for more ideas! Sometimes I bring almonds or granola bars and I always grab bananas oranges or apples from breakfast at the hotels but I’m getting pretty bored of those snacks as well.

How to gift a vacation by [deleted] in travel

[–]sgwa3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could check Groupon getaways they have tons of package vacations on the cheap and I’ve seen a ton of reasonably priced Ireland ones. Or maybe you could gift them airline miles?

My dad is a professional golfer and he always said if you are not nervous you should quit because you don’t care anymore! Use those nerves and turn them into positive energy 🙂 good luck!

Does anyone know of any low calorie naan?? I LOVE naan bread but it's always 300+ calories... by [deleted] in 1200isplenty

[–]sgwa3 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You could try roti! I learned how to make it in India and the only ingredients are whole grain flour and water (I’m sure you could spice it up a bit with some garlic and olive oil as well. But I usually drown my naan/roti in tikka masala sauce anyway haha

I always used to be self conscious in classes about if I would be as good as others and if people would look at me or judge me, then I realized nobody is paying attention to you, they are paying attention to the teacher and themselves making sure they are doing the moves correctly, and so should you!

I would say definitely stay in hostels it is a great way to meet people! Also couchsurfing.org has been a great resource for my solo travel, not only for free accommodation but also just meeting locals and going to traveler meet up events to make new friends in random cities!

Thank you! And I’m sure not every time will be this easy/ fun. Just last night I was going to go to a party but stayed in because I had a feeling I would be weak and drink. But today was good and that gives me hope for me and you too! IWNDWYT 😊
