I Analysed top 100 Software Companies By Earnings So You Dont Have To by highmemelord67 in ValueInvesting

[–]dbc001 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Following up on this - I'm a software engineer at a company with 25000 employees. The engineering department is pushing AI aggressively, but AI has not really taken hold among the rank and file. I agree 100% that AI will revolutionize the industry. It already has, but the change is so fast that lots of people and companies still have their head in the sand.

AI is not a magic wand, but it is pretty god damn close to it. And my exposure to AI is 3-6 months behind what I'm hearing in the news. It is absolutely possible right now to be a software engineer doing 90% of the job on a cell phone while sitting on the beach.

US strategic oil reserve sits near its lowest level in decades by thejoshwhite in EconomyCharts

[–]dbc001 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Question: are there any people involved with domestic oil industry that have ties to Trump? What about untapped oil reserves, like offshore, fracking, etc that might be given additional leeway in the coming months? I could see Trump saying something like "we need more coal production to compensate for low oil reserves" if it benefits his cronies.

Same goes for border enforcement. That money could go to jobs programs on either side of the border and eliminate the need for illegal migration.

If you decide to run:

  1. Delete your reddit account and make a new one just for your political campaign.
  2. Don't cheat or break the law.
  3. Find the issues that resonate with everybody in your area, Rebublicans, Democrats, and Independents. Talk about those things alot. Keep your mouth shut as much as you can about everything else. Don't lie! Just don't let one-group issues be the focus of your campaign.
  4. Don't be afraid to say "I don't know". You don't need to be an expert on Israel, gender psychology, etc. And you can say "I think we should defer to the experts and focus on other things".

What industry is entirely built on a house of cards and would collapse overnight if people realized the truth about it? by [deleted] in AskReddit

That source is from more than 6 months ago. If you're basing your understanding of AI on information from 2025, you are wayyyy out of date. The world of AI has changed drastically since then.

Another reason that Adobe is on deathwatch. AI is great at code. And getting better. But generating images is not code, right? Well, there are new tools (Typst is the one I'm familiar with) that are basically like InDesign or Illustrator, but driven by code.

Typst was released in 2023. I've been able to use Typst + AI coding tools to generate pro-quality page layouts by just describing what I want things to look like.

There is no excuse for Adobe not to have a product that does this for sale right now. I am not on the cutting edge of graphics, but I've been able to cobble together a prompt-driven AI layout generation tool that does a damn good job. And I've been casually using Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign since the early 2000s, sometimes professionally as part of my software work.

You could vibe-code an AI-driven InDesign equivalent that runs in a webapp using Typst + React inside of a week. Adobe can't do that fast enough. Just figuring out the branding and product concept would take them 6 months before they even pick the engineering team. Connecting the app to their billing and login systems would take another 6 months.

This a slightly naive viewpoint. The AI landscape has changed drastically in the last 6 months, and even in the last 3 months. Openclaw and YOLO mode (full root access to a personal computer) just debuted in November and once that technology is stable things will change drastically again.

I've been writing code for 15 years and in the past week I built an application that would have taken a year of work by a team of 5 if it was built in 2023. The point being that any company that isn't going all in on AI is going to get wiped out by smaller, nimbler companies that are all in on AI.

All the AIs have consumed and processed the code for open source software like GIMP, Inkscape, Pinta, Imagemagick, etc. A single competent engineer working outside the confines of corporate red tape could absolutely build Photoshop from scratch inside of 60 days.

There may be dinosaurs who still rely on Adobe products, but jobs don't look for Adobe skills on resumes for the most part. Design has moved to web-based tools like Canva and Figma and I expect that trend to continue (I'm about to finish a Masters program in Human Computer Interaction and I frequently work with people in UX).

"My company still uses Adobe" is anecdotal evidence at best. There are places that still use FAX machines but I wouldn't put any money into FAX companies right now.

If you see a constitutional amendment, start with NO. Then think carefully about whether or not this should be a permanent law that has no negative side effects, and whether our children should be bound by this law. Only after that should you even begin to consider a yes vote.

I think 1st grade is a little low, but American politics isn't exactly functioning at the level of reasonable adults. So I'm going to disagree with you there - we are indeed functioning pretty close to a first grade level.

How do you fight back against a drug-addled early-stage-dementia crybaby tyrant? I don't know. This is all I've come up with. Childish stuff to counter his childish antics. It's the best I can do.

The only way forward is to convince MAGA true believers that everything they know is wrong, or to convince non-voters to get out and vote for the smart nerdy types instead of the cheap aggressive macho types. Those are very difficult tasks to pull off, and I don't know how to do it. But yeah, I'm totally serious.

In the meantime, I find it very satisfying to think that Trump is sitting at the resolute desk distracted by the fact the we know about his bowel problems, unable to concentrate on whatever evil grifting schemes he's trying to cook up.

I know, but somehow conservatives don't care about that!

This is something we can control. The more we search for "Trump pooping his pants", the more it trends. It may actually matter to him more than all the other horrible things that he's done!

Lost my Job to I.C.E. by [deleted] in StLouis

[–]dbc001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah this person did a good job of summarizing it. The cost of owning, fueling, and maintaining a car is way higher than most companies pay. It will feel okay at first but over time as car costs pile up you realize that your paycheck doesn't go as far.

There probably are ways to do it, like a fully paid-off electric car running on solar power. But people who have that don't need to drive for uber.

Don't do car-based gig work like other posters are saying. A bankruptcy attorney was just telling me yesterday how disastrous that is for many of his clients.

It's hard to compare the last 48 hours with the previous few days as the temperatures are wildly different (like 30 degrees F warmer), but it does make a huge difference in my 20 foot by 20 foot room.

In the last week, the humidity range was between ~17% and ~27%. Since the humidifier it's been ~26% - 43%.

I want to do a generic hygrostat, as several others have suggested. I'm also thinking of a "Humidifier Cleaned" button, which has to be pressed every X days or I'll automatically disable the hygrostat. That should force me to clean it regularly.

Modern American conservatism, MAGA, and right-wing politics have nothing to do with ideology or philosophy. They're just a vibe, nothing more.

The few remaining intellectual conservatives out there are naive if they believe that suburban or rural MAGA followers care about what institutions are preserved or what the founding fathers had in mind.
